Re: Is the Soda Stream accessible?

With the clarification that it's been a long, long time, and that I didn't do very much, and that what I was using wasn't a soda stream so the mechanics might be different, listen at your own risk, etc, what you're looking for are two things.First is a sweet but unflavored syrup.  Corn syrup is always a good bet, and what 99% of these things use for the sugar part.Second are flavorings.  Anything that's liquid is okay.  You want it to mix with the liquid that's already there easily.  Juices are a good start but you'll just end up with watered down juice.  You want to look into concentrates, extracts, and infusions.  You know about vanilla extract, but you can actually make that with any herb, spice, or fruit which can be dehydrated, and you can buy a ton of different kinds on the internet no problem.  Unless I have them backward, extracts are made with alcohol and infusions are done with hot oil, but in either case what you're left with is a liquid that tastes very strongly of the thing that you put in it, without any of the solid bits left around to be a problem.Soda Stream wants you putting things in after because things can change the carbonation reaction.  Water is fine, but anything else in there may or may not carbonate the same.  That can range from no bubbles to look I made a rocket ship/old faithful geyser combo and now my kitchen is destroyed.  It's not actually bubbles in soda, it's dissolved carbon dioxide, so it's kind of not intuitive what will or won't change the reaction.  But if you find recipes online and proceed with caution you'll be pretty all right. For the really advanced user, you can actually make home-made syrup pretty easily, where by pretty easily I mean be comfortable with boiling sugar on the stove.  But if you go there, you can effectively have premade syrup of any flavor you want.  Maple ginger jalapeno garlic surprise, sure thing, no problem, big pot of that in the fridge to amaze and horrify at parties, about 2 hours of work tops, probably less, and it'll last a long time. But let me just close by reiterating that this is high pressure cooking, in a literal sense, so be safe about it.  If you carbonate the water and add stuff afterwords, that's always going to be fine.  If you swap the liquid out or add stuff before, do your homework first, and maybe start with partial batches until you know just what's going to happen to it.

Re: Is the Soda Stream accessible?

Apparently it's really important to carbonate the water first and add stuff to it later, so Sodastream says anyway. I'd love to know any tips you have though, particularly on making your own stuff. For example, there's a store bought seltzer I want to try that's ginger lime. Assuming I like it, I haven't seen anything like that in pre-made flavors. But I don't really know how to make my own, for instance, what to do with the ginger so I don't get bits of ginger in my final product. I get the basic idea of mixing ginger and lime juice, sure. But there's obviously more to it than that. To quote the late great Mitch Hedberg:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkUiRGQHjdc

Re: Is the Soda Stream accessible?

I'm late to this discussion, but all this is is a thing that carbonates water.  You can add syrup or whatever to taste, and unless I'm very much mistaken you can also do things like carbonated apple juice, etc. in it if you do a little bit of homework first.  They carbonate differently so you want to know what you're getting into, and my experiments were done in an isi whip when I went through my molecular gastronomy phase, which makes doing it easier, so ymmv.A lot of surprising stuff will carbonate though.  Whole fruit for example, though I doubt a soda stream has a big enough opening for that.In any case, there's a very large margin for error.

Re: Is the Soda Stream accessible?

We're getting one on Thursday, supposedly. It might take a bit because we won't be messing with it right when it comes, but I'll try and remember to post about using the Sodastream flavors themselves. But I've seen stuff that's sort of what Ironcross talks about, e.g. an alternative is Crystal Light, and that's packets of powder.

Re: Is the Soda Stream accessible?

We had things where you poured the whole packet in, and then there were big things of powder that you took a teaspoon orso of and poured in. You do the CO2 first, then the thing

Re: Is the Soda Stream accessible?

This post inspired me to look into this myself. I don't have a huge soda habit but want to try reducing the sweetness by using less syrup, adding in different ingredients to change the flavor profile, etc.One question I have is about the syrup. I can't get a straight answer on whether you just add a few drops to your water, or if you pour into the cap. How does this work? If just a few drops, how do you manage that? Are the bottles droppers? If pouring into a cap, does it flow slowly enough that pouring lots of liquid into a small container is easy enough? Thanks.

Re: Is the Soda Stream accessible?

I originally thought of it because my wife tried a couple of fruit-flavored seltzers, and they were actually decent, unlike the last time I tried a flavored water which hardly had any flavor and tasted like chemicals on top of that. I'm not worried about getting an exact duplicate of brand X soda, just something that tastes good. Well OK, I hope the birch beer tastes like birch beer, yeah. But other than that, I figure it will be different, just like an A-Treat cola doesn't taste like a coke, for those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about substitute RC Cola or whatever your region's generic soda brand is and you've got it.

Re: Is the Soda Stream accessible?

They don't taste like the drinks you are used to. Some of them are good, others are not so good. The process is fairly easy though.

Re: Is the Soda Stream accessible?

Thanks! Sorry it took me so long to get back to this, I read it the other day and then got busy with other stuff. I'm sure I can figure out some way to get where the line is. If nothing else I can find appropriate vessels, fill them, and dump them into the Soda Stream's bottle.

It is. Its a bit trial and error to getting the hang of where to stop with filling water in, but everything else is easy going and straight forward.

Is the Soda Stream accessible?

2020-09-10 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : khomus via Audiogames-reflector

Is the Soda Stream accessible?

I swear I saw somebody post about this a while back, but searching only turned up one post mentioning the Soda Stream, so I figured I may as well ask.Is this thing accessible? It sounds like it should be, but I've just seen stuff about making drinks with it, e.g. hooking the bottle on or whatever. I wasn't going to worry about it until I found a place selling, I think, sugar free birch beer. The shipping on diet birch beer in cans is crazy, and otherwise I'd have to fly back east to get some. While I'm sure my mom would be happy for the visit, that's really not practical on a regular basis, so I haven't had birch beer in three or four years.I notice they say in their FAQ that their bottles have a "fill line" and you should only fill up to there. Doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would be accessible, but could be an easy way to work around it that I don't know. To my knowledge I've never even been near one of them, let alone gotten my hands on one to see how they work. But man I loves me some birch beer. So I'm pretty excited about potentially getting some, if the thing's usable. So any tips, tricks, horror stories, and so on would be greatly appreciated.
