Re: help with learning lone wolf

It's quite a while since I played lone wolf. As I remember, I had to spend quite a bit of time on missions 1 and 2 getting used to the game and how things worked. first, I had to learn my sub's angles, that 0 was north, 90 was east, 180 was south, 270 degrees was west, and then apply those to turning. The depth gun I only really found useful for stationary or slow moving targets, for fast things like destroyers, I always tended to use torpedo's instead, and the best way I tended to find was to try and be to the side of whatever I was aiming at.Raul Gallegos did record some walkthrus for the game which can I believe be found on the audiogames archive, where he uses the depth gun quite a lot. I also remember there was a more in depth audio review by someone else kicking around at one point, which might be up there too, which did go in to movement etc. I will say that Lone wolf was one game where I was very glad Gma games didn't have a limited trial, since the first time I tried it, I failed miserably, and it took me a good few plays at the demo before I became adept enough to consider the full game, and even then Lw was never a game I exelled at, though I did enjoy it, indeed I probably ought to get my key renewed and give it another try.

Re: lone wolf question

Hi,spoilers ahead, warning, warning!I've been through the ten first books without dying more then once each book, without cheating of course, without remaking choices. Well, I've done it honestly untill here, but here I am, with one major question :can someone tell me what to do with the chaos master ? I mean, yeah, fight him of course but... This fight seems awfully difficult and luck based. With the somersweir I tend to say it's quite impossible, so I went back (with regret I must confess) and found the ironheart broadsword, but it seems actually made for people who don't have the somersweir anymore. Even if it concedes an advantage for the fight, it seems still based on luck, and you still need a lot.How did you get past this one? I don't want to cheat, I reall want to make it all over the cycle with an unchanged character except for what happens logically during its travel, but I'm affraid I really can't.Any idea? Is this a mistake in the book, an unbalanced match I'm supposed to skip?Best regard,Simon

Re: lone wolf question

The disciplines carry over across series, so yes, kai and magna kai disciplines are their own thing, so by the time you get to magna kai series, you should already have all kai disciplines and can now get the new ones. I believe that the weapon mastery discipline let's you pick one more to master in addition to your chosen weapon. It's usually one of the first things I pick when starting out, so that i can master as many weapons as I can by the end. I think they provide bonuses, assuming that you are using something that you have mastered, but i dont remember by how much, i am quite sure of the bonus though. I always pick a bow to start out as my first weapon to master with the discipline for the extra damage bonus if I can shoot before combat starts.

Hi!Me again, with another question... What's the deal with magna kay disciplines exactly ? Do they combine with basic kay disciplines? For example, does curing act in addition to healing, do I get 2 endurance points for each section without combat? What about weapons mastery ? If I take it, am I allowed to add one more weapon in addition to the three I choose for each book, regardless of the other disciplines I choose in each book?Further more, does this weapon mastery add its bonus to my ordinary weapon skill ? For example, if I choose among my list a weapon my character allready masters with the standard weapon kay discipline, do their bonus act together?I really don't want to do any accidental trick so I prefer to ask here. Thanks for your help !Best regard,Simon

Lol I bought a bookmark in the android app because there are way too many books to have to be starting over again and again, and the later ones can be quite lengthy. In regards to the healing discipline, I think that its handy to have if your combat stats are not the best. When i create a character in the beginning, I would like to have some nice stats, but having to keep reroll for better stats is time consuming, so I take the best that I can realistically get. Dont worry, there will come plenty of time to get hurt in the future, and not just through combat, and you have another 16 books to go for that char, so quite a ways yet.

Re: lone wolf question

Hi!Some questions again, but this time more general. How do you deal with death? With this kind of game, I used to consider death as an ending, but here I'm not sure. I won't herase my character because of a sudden unpredictable death. I would probably do so for a death in combat cause it would be my mistake, but some deaths happens quite randomly.Do you start the book all over again? Do you recreate a charecter with new stats?Next, what about the healing skill ? Doesn't it seem a little overpowered to you? With one endurance point regained for each section clear of combat, it goes really fast. Personnally I tend to intentionnally forget one or two along the way to be a little more realistic.Besides, the somersweir gives a massive advantage and, by respecting the combat table, I usually kill each ennemy in a single swing of the sword, usually without loosing any endurance point. I'm only in book 4, but I hope my ennemies will get harder to defeate in the next cycle...Is it so?Best regard,Simon

Re: How to play Lone Wolf titles on my PC

Yep, the html versions are the only accessible ones available at the second. What you need to do is find your favourite dice program, and when it tells you to "pick a number from the action Chart" roll a d10. In combat, first, work out your difference in combat strength between you and the enemy. So if lw has a combat strength of 6 and the enemy has a combat strength of 2, you go across the top of the table to the +5 column, whilst if the monster has a  strength of 8 and Lw has a combat strength of 6, you go to the -2 column. Then, roll a d10 and go down that many rows on the table, each row will tell you how many endurance points you and the enemy both lose, continue until one of you kicks the provertbial bucket.I'd also recommend writing out a character sheet listing what items you have, what kai diciplins you learn etc, since they all carry over from book to book, and putting all 20 lw books together, its quite the journey. hth. The \Lw books are great fun, I really find they have that wonderful eighties feel good factor, and while I really do wish there was an accessible way of playing them that would handl items, stats etc doing the stuff on your own isn't too hard.

Re: How to play Lone Wolf titles on my PC

Okay tayo.bethel, that's easy enough to explain. You've likely seen a standard six sided cuboid dice, the sort you play games like monopoly, snakes and ladders etc with? That sort of dice obviously can give you a number between one and six. However, in role playing games, you need to generate different numbers, this is done by rolling differently shaped dice with other numbers of sides than six. For example, in standard dungeons and dragons Clerics get between one and 8 hitpoints per level, you would determine this number by rolling an 8 sided dice, which looks like two pyramids stuck together, while the weedy wizards only get between one and four hitpoints per level, which you determine with a 4 sided dice, which looks like a triangular pyramid. These dice are referd to by role players (and in some computer rpgs too), with an initial D. So your bog standard monopoly dice is a d6, the four sided dice is a d4 etc. often a role will be described in terms of how many and which dice to  role, for example rolling two six sided dice as in monopoly could be described as rolling "2d6" You often find this in computer rpgs too, for example you might find a sword said to do "d6" worth of damage, or be told that a success roll for your character carrying out an action requires a "roll of a d20"  The same goes for dice programs, for example, if I remember rightly, in GMA dice the F keys all give preset rolls of a number of dice described in this way, EG hitting F8 will role one d8, though you can customise the presets. For lonewolf  what I used to do was just have GMA dice open in another window, and whenever the game told me to "pick a number from the action chart", I'd just hit F10 to roll one d10. Note that in lw the numbers are 0-9, not 1-10, so a roll of 10 counts as zero. Hth. As I said, this is a good thing to learn as the dice nomenclature of describing dice as so many d whatevers is commonly used in a lot of Rpgs both on and off computer, indeed I used Gma dice in pretty much the same way for all the years I played tabletop games with my friends.

There's an html version on the project.aon site, but  back in 2005 someone sent me an ms word version which I still have and could pass on if that would be better.@tayo.bethel no need to "learn to roll dice" just picked your favourite dice program and have at it. I used Gma dice but these days there are several other options around too, heck I believe you can even roll a d10 with Alexa or google, so if its just the dice that are the problem, no need to miss out. Rolling dice is a good skill to get into anyway, it served me well when I did tabletop rp.

Re: How to play Lone Wolf titles on my PC

The attempts to make lonewolf accessible have been fully intigrated versions of the books that automate everything, skills, dice rolls, inventory etc. The problem is they've always used silverlight or some other completely inaccessible technologty to output the text. Making a program for basic combat wouldn't be too hard, just input lw's strength and that of his enemy and then let the program roll dice and look on the table, however making an entire program for running all the books with inventory and everything else would be. absance of either though, its not too difficult to just navigate a table and roll a d10, just like its not too difficult to write up a character sheet with items and skills and such.

Re: How to play Lone Wolf titles on my PC

I wonder why the programming is inaccessible? What it is is literally a dice roller coupled with the table in which we'd have the results of the roll, correct?I would like to take a look at this. Is the game text available anywhere for me to look at? I want to see the formatting. Can I perhaps download the files somewhere? Are the characters supposed to carry over book to book? If so, that would be a bit difficult to do, but still be possible to accomplish.

Re: How to play Lone Wolf titles on my PC

The games don't handle stats automatically and sadly all the automated attempts to program them didn't work out accessible. On the plus side, there is a combat table showing the results, and you can always use your favourite dice program to roll a d10 to generate a number between 0 and 9, then look it up on the table. hth.

How to play Lone Wolf titles on my PC

Hi:How can I play the Lone Wolf series of text games on my PC? I have the books themselves but have no idea how to upgrade stats and such using the tables and such. And perhaps I am lazy, but I prefer automatically leveling to pointing a. Pencil at an imaginary spot on my dead screen. I also tried Bluestacks, but that didn’t work out so well. So is there an accessible set of these games for PC or will I have to forego these games? I really like the story behind these games.

Re: Lone Wolf

First, I would read the game manual. Next, I would use missions one and two to learn how the different weapons of your boat work. Take the time to learn how to set up a Torpedo shot. play with the sonar and radar to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each. learn how to attack  without making noise. Remember that the strength of a U-boat is not to be seen or heard. The higher the level you play at, the higher the likelihood of you being heard or seen goes up. the user manual gives some world war II stories that you might find interesting. These stories might give you a clue on how to go about beating each mission. Hope this helps.

Re: Question about lone wolf

Sapi, speech api. Essentially it's an in built text to speech system that comes with all versions of windows and can be accessed by a number of applications such as windows narrator, certain addons for internet explorer to speak pages, interactive fiction interpreters etc. All screen reading programs I believe can directly output to sapi as well, though many have in built proprietory voices instead.Several audio games use it as an output method too, for example all of Jim Kitchin's and Ian Humphries spoonbill games, and other games that output to screen readers can output to sapi, indeed that's the way I usually use programs like vipmud from Gma games.By default the microsoft sapi voices provided with windows are pretty cruddy, but if you have better sinth voices installed you can enable them in the windows control panel. So for lone wolf, if you don't have window eyes or jaws you can enable sapi and be fine. Hth.

Re: Lone Wolf

It work almost like your deck gun with a major difference. The difference is that you turn your boat instead of the gun. YOu also do not need to worry about setting the range. The down side is that you have to have your sub aimed right to hit the different ships. To do that, you have to take into acount how fast the ship you are aiming at is going along with the direction that they are heading. Your goal is to set a little a head of the ship in question with your sub aim at the path that the ship is taking. if you of the doors open and you are tracking, the game will let you know when it is best to fire the torps. I guess I could let you hear me play through mission 2 if you wish.

Im not as certain ofthat kyleman. the readme is detailed, but its not got too many tips, plus as with most of Gmas instructions, the readme is rather dence and while it has all the information you could ever want, it doesnt put it in a particularly easy to swallow format. Dont get me wrong, I love Gmas games and am looking forward incredibly to any new releases, but Im sometimes not convinced that explanation of complex concepts is exactly David Greenwoods forte, exceptional though his games are.

@Hanif, going streight to the cargo ships position is no good as you have noticed. What you need to do is head to a point where you will get a good shot at the ship, usually this will be to one side of its travel path.I dont recall mission 3 specifically (mission 5 was the one where I had real trouble), but its generally all about trying to track where something is going and being in the right place at the right time. Raul Gillegos did a good audio walkthru for the game (although its only slightly of help being as Rauls abilities with space and angles are obviously way! better than mine, he is able to take out the tutorial mission just with the depth gun). You can find Rauls walkthrus Here on his site

Re: lone wolf, is it playable with NVDA?

The first targeting mission is actually imho harder than the second. what you need to do is stay in place and then turn around to face the ships. As I remember the first one comes from in front of you so you can pretty much face north, but the second one is coming in at an angle to your position so you need to turn right around to get it. Raul gillegos in his walkthru could do them all with the depth gun, though I never got that successful myself. I do remember though that once I got the trick of killing the second and third the last was easy.

The bad news is No, lonewolf wont work with Nvda, sinse when lonewolf was developed Nvda didnt exist (Nvda support might be added in Lw 4 which David Greenwood is apparently working on). The good news however is that Lone wolf will work quite successfully out of the box with Sapi, which is in fact how I play it myself, indeed Sapi works very nicely for synchronising the real time and speech together.

Re: lone wolf, is it playable with NVDA?

Yes, Dark is very much correct. Lone Wolf unfortunately does not work with NVDA, but that is mainly because when Lone Wolf was last updated by GMA NVDA simply didnt exist. Although, like Dark said I have heard that is in the works for version 4.0.That said, if you have a decent SAPI voice or two Lone Wolf works fine with SAPI. I use Lone Wolf all the time with SAPI and have no serious issues with it on Windows 7.

What??? I dont see any questions about cracks or keys, but only the game, which is downloadable from the GMA games website! So, why is the reminder of the FAQ needed?

Re: Lone wolf please help me

@Slj, given that lone wolf is quite easy to find on the gma website or in the Db, I really wasnt sure why milos was asking in this topic, hence the reminder sinse while yes, he could just want the setup file for the demo, he could equally have wanted a full cracked copy, its just not clear from the request. If Milos did just want the setup file and couldnt get it from gma games for some reason, well fare enough, however now he knows the site policy.

Fare enough Milos, in which case its on the Gma games site as far as I know. Hope you enjoy the game, though bare in mind Lw has a very steep learning curve so it will probably take you a while to get into the game, indeed you might want to download some audio demos or walkthrus to help you et used to things.

Well if you have a limitede connection that is understandable. Fortunately, I am either in my flat where I have a ridiculously fast dsl monster (actually far faster than I really need but it was a free upgrade of the equipment), while at my parents though the connection is much slower in speed its still there, and there are no audiogames (even swamp), that Ive seen that really cause major lag with it. On the other hand, when I used to stay for three weeks in a guest house at the buxton light opera festival, I ironically could only get an internet connection at the pub! . Actually I think people mustve thought I was a real alkie, sinse when not at light opera events I was in there in the mornings, (though usually I just drank coffee). At that point I couldnt play online games, indeed I played through most of castaways (in offline
mode), and Lunimals, as well as several works of interactive fiction. So, if your on a limited connection I can understand why you prefer to play games offline, though mostly for me its not an issue.

Well Niclas it depends upon how you play them really. Both lw and the choiceofgames can be played online, indeed Online was first how I played all the Lw books, though I have now downloaded their html packages just so that I have a store of them in case the website goes down. I personally dont mind whether their online or not, but I like having the choiceofgames books on my Iphone for both convenience and easy saving.

Hello all,There is now an app, called Lone Wolf Saga, on the google play store, but it is an android exclusive. It is free, and has no adds. Yep, you heard that right, no adds at all. Anyhow, this app has a statistics tracker, and makes the gamebooks more like choice-based things, but it preserves stuff by saying to turn to the certain pages, asking you to role, etc.The app was last updated on 19 November 2014, and has flight through the dark, all the way up to the masters of darkness, fully playable. The app name is: Lone Wolf SagaThe link, for those who want to get it that way, is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … WolfBiblio

Combat is a bit odd though, lots of numbers and its not really explained. The other con is that there seems to be no basic rules explanations about how ocmbat works, what endurance points are used for, etc. Although, skills and stuff have descriptions when you double click them. Its perfectly playable and you can learn as you go.The app was last updated on 19 November 2014, and has flight through the dark, all the way up to the masters of darkness, fully playable. The app name is: Lone Wolf SagaThe link, for those who want to get it that way, is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … WolfBiblio

Re: project aon Lone wolf news: app now on android

Well Aaron as regards the rules, if they have preserved all of the text from the books each has a rules section at the start to tell you what is what, though combat might work a little differently. They also did produce a readers handbook on the projectaon site with a full explanation of all the lw rules, plus some handy clarrifications from some old lw club news letters. If this has full talk back support that is fantastic. None of the efforts to make more programming intensive ways of playing the projectaon titles have been accessible at all thus far, the 7th sense player used an inaccessible form of java and the magnamund commander worked through silverlight but neither was any good for screen readers. nice there is an alternative even if it is androi only. now if only the idiots who continued the publishing of lw and produced the modern reprints of the books with all the extras plus continued the series after the hunger of seganos would do accessible
versions as well.Let me know if you hear about anything on Ios.I always play the lw books when Im feeling down and want something to cheer me up, sinse that hole 1980s ethos of jolly adventuring through a dangerous world with awsome skills, occasionally meeting a sticky end is just so much a high. I love the point in shadow on the sand when you climb to the top of the tower chased by the guards in the Zakhans palace and get the opportunity to push a huge base drumb down the stairs on them, now thats what I call a drumb roll! .

Hello,I think its just one guy developing the app, and unlike Apple, android is a pay once, get your app published, for twenty dollars (for your first app only), sort of affair, where as apple charge a crazy amount, yearly, to get any app published, and I think it works per ap too, so I can see why the person chose android over iOS.
