Re: Using Chrome OS Without a Monitor?

Things might be different now, but my 2006 Mac Mini would go busy a lot more with VoiceOver running. Hmmm, I may have to use my fit-headless HDMI adapter if I get this. I want to try Chrome OS, but I don't really want another laptop with another battery that will go bad in 2-3 years and be very difficult if not impossible to replace.

Using Chrome OS Without a Monitor?

Using Chrome OS Without a Monitor?

I found the Asus Chromebox 4 for $285 and think it would be a good way to dip my toe into the Chrome OS world in order to learn it and stay up to date with future developments for the next 6-7 years or so. Can I use Chrome OS and ChromeVox without a monitor connected to the computer or will it have a hissyfit like Mac Minis? I thought I could use the Raspberry Pi without a monitor and learned the hard way I can't, at least with Raspberry Pi OS.

Re: can you tell me more about chrome os?

Most people don't need super fast processors and 16 GB or more RAM if all they plan to do is access Facebook, read emails, watch Netflix, or play web games. The great thing about the Internet is most of the heavy lifting is done on someone else's computer, not your own. As I said before, the idea behind Chrome OS is brilliant! Give people an affordable conduit to the Internet. That's all people want. Post 18 is absolutely correct. If you want a system that lets you do more things offline, you shouldn't even be remotely thinking about Chrome OS.

Totally agreed with post 18. As much as I love my ThinkPad, which, btw comes out of sleep in about 5 seconds, I wish I could get 12 hours out of it. You have to remember that chromebooks, as much as I wouldn't bother getting one now has its purpose. For college students who just moved out and want something lightweight and cheap to type college notes on, to go to google classroom, Zoom, google, and possibly run light apps, etc. Its not meant to be a power PC with all the top notch ram and CPU's people on here seem to overvalue, its meant to be cheap, reliable computing. Sorta like a Toyota Corolla or a Toyota Prius. Sure they're dog boring and slow, but they have a purpose. Also to wrap it up, @Chris, you perfectly captured my opinion about the hardware. Its device specific, just like we have crappy UP windows machines, looking at you old PC, and then we have machines like what folks like Granny cheese and ghost has, but just because my computer literally snapped in half when I reached in and took out the SSD that doesn't suddenly mean windows is shit

Re: can you tell me more about chrome os?

@11OK, so none of them points are actually negatives about Chrome OS, but the hardware you're running. So anyone who reads this thread looking for actual info, runs the risk of reading your post and going "Well, all Chrome OS devices are terrible, because this Gaki person says so", completely not getting the fact that either A: You installed an unofficial port on your own machine, or B: You bought - or were given - the cheapest Chrome OS device around, which was always going to be terrible by dint of having the specs of a broken abacus.@12OK, sorry, but there are so, so many things wrong with your post. I'll attempt to elucidate them:Chrome OS devices were not - in the beginning - aimed at "pro users". You say that Chrome OS is not really useful for a lot of people. Excluding the aforementioned "pro users", how many people do you know who do stuff that doesn't require a web browser? Zoom? Microsoft Teams? Microsoft Word? Pages? There are web interfaces for all of those.Second, that was in the beginning. Now Chrome OS has access to pretty much anything that Linux has access to thanks to Crostini. The fact that the accessibility leaves something to be desired does not mean it doesn't exist. While you're right about Chrome running fine on Windows, there's also a lot of other things Windows drags around with it. It's kind of like taking a helicopter to the local shop: It'll get you there, but damn it'll take up lots of fuel.On the subject of fuel: Have you seen the battery life you can get out of Chrome OS devices? It's like 12 hours on some models. Show me a comparably-priced Windows or - especially - Mac OS machine that does that.By saying about companies and what have you wanting more control over their people, I'm afraid you've completely missed the point of Chrome OS. Yes, it does have enterprise features, but so does Windows. When you go out and about with your laptop, are you being a pro? Do you write thousands of lines of code and hammer intensive games? Or do you just reply to a few emails and check the news? Because that's what "most" people do when they're out and about. And if you're going to do that, why not use a light, cool (as in temperature) laptop that will run all day on a single charge, and charges from a nice little USB C chord to boot, thus probably sharing a charging cable with your phone? Also, it's not a new architecture if you mean like ARM or x86, but I think I see your point. You're still largely wrong, because as you pointed out, it's just Chrome, so most people - including some folks who don't know the difference between a computer and a microwave - can still use it.You mention windows quite a lot of times in your post. It's probably your favourite OS - it's mine too, as it goes, but think about what you're saying: Why spend £400 on a kick ass Chrome machine that lets me play Candy Crush, read emails, talk to my Uncle Bob on the other side of the world, and do basic photo editing with a bunch of free apps, when I could spend £700 on an average Windows machine with a fraction of the battery life, that works about as fast, and has loads of shit I don't need? For myself, when I volunteer I use a Chromebook. I rarely write code there, I check emails, I toggle the phone on and off, I log calls, or I Google things for people. Why drag a Windows machine around with me? The Chrome Book I have was free with my Pixel 3, and it still comes out of sleep faster than my Lenovo ThinkPad.Oh yeah: Let's not forget that a new license for Windows is over £100. Chrome OS is essentially free, because you can download the correct recovery image for the machine you're using.Oh yeah: Let's not forget that a new license for Windows is over £100. Chrome OS is essentially free, because you can download the correct recovery image for the machine you're using. Also, on windows, I rarely have more than 3 windows open: CMD, Visual Studio Code, and Chrome. I have no less than 4 tabs open in chrome at any one time: Gmail, my text messages, WhatsApp web, and Spotify. Usually Slack too. All of these tabs open - and provide the same performance - on Chrome OS. See the pattern here? If I wasn't a coder, I might not even bother with a Windows machine.@14Yes, you're right: You can use the google male and female voices. I'm not sure what others are there, because I just stuck with the default. You can also use ESpeak. There's just another section where you can select its voices to download. Works great.I think you can also use any other TTS engine you can install on Android.@16Can you open up a full Bash shell on unmodified Android? View full sites rather than mobile ones with any extra work? Have so much control over the OS with the keyboard? I mean like reading the current time, battery status, reading the URL behind a link, switching between tabs, desks and windows? How about pinning, then shortcuts for opening up the things you

Re: can you tell me more about chrome os?

To be really honest here, I think google would have done a better job by far by investing in android further, rather than developing crome OS. For example, cromebooks would really be more attractive with an optimised version of android for pc's in stead of this thing. I mean, android in its default mode has way more things to offer than crome OS ever could, plus without changing critical settings or enabling things in developer mode, it's pretty hard to mess it up. The only problem with android is the your phone is too old, you don't get updates, policy. So, to conclude my set of rumblings yet again, I would never again use crome OS, though I used it before when my school gave it to me and I didn't personally like it. So, give me an android laptop/tablet/whatever over that any day!now back to the thingi, had anyone tryed the free and open source version of crome OS on a vm or comp? Did it have cromevox or not? Anyway, about the tts thingi, like whatever you have on your android and then some.

Re: can you tell me more about chrome os?

About my own views, I expressed them in my previous post on this topic, however I want to reiterate in case someone didn't get it then. I Don't know exactly why, maybe because I'm more of a kind of pro user, crome OS and all its variants never is or was for me. For example, its very nature makes it not really useful for a lot of people, like...it's just a browser spanning an entire damn OS. What's really that good or overly exciting about that? Want crome, just use crome browser on windows, ubuntu or even macs. Why an entirely new architecture and a new kind of computer just for crome alone? I mean, however many settings, useful new shortcuts, apps and the most part of the google suite it has, it will still be crome at its core, and so it shall remain. Maybe it's great for firms or big institutions who want more controll over their employers/students, as there is no other OS with that level of sandboxing built-in by default. However, for the rest of us, as much as crome OS is advertised, it's nothing better than crome itself if you really think about it. Maybe you couldn't do things crome OS does with cromium browsers without some a bit obscure extenssions, but it's certainly doable. If you use it for collaboration, crome is certainly up to the task, with google docs, sheets, slides, etc. If you want cromevox, I ask you, why? There is a good screen reader already built-in to windows that offers kind of what cromevox does, it's called narrator. If a pro level user, use nvda, or even ubuntu, no questions asked rofl.So now that I ranted enough about it, why do you use cromebooks guys? What is so special about it to you?

Re: can you tell me more about chrome os?

hy guys!technically, you can install a variant of it on non-cromebook hardware, since its open source like android. I DK whether you'll have cromevox on it, or even if you do, I can't be sure you will have the google tts voices, so you'll have to install espeak with sighted assistance. I don't want to unintentionally spread missinformation here, so do take what I said above with a grain of sault.Btw, if you go this road of installing the opensource version of the os, be warned that not every feature available in the cromebooks will be by default integrated in your thing. Kind of what happens with installing the opensource version of android, without google APIs. For example, you won't be able to use the admin console, neither to use it your self, or to be controlled by it. This can be either a good or bad thing, depending how you're looking at it. Next, you can't run android or linux apps, like you could with the cromebooks. I DK more things off the top of my head, but I guess this would already make this only a fancy web browser spanning an entire OS. DK, it might be good for some people, but I never really liked the concept of crome OS and what it stands for.If you still want to install a variant of the crome OS with most features back and kind of like the same as on the cromebooks, look at cloudready's solution. They kind of reimplemented the missing features from the public build of crome OS, making them as similar to cromebooks as possible.Be ware, though, I never tested that, so you might not get cromevox installed on that, or, again even if you do, you might not have any tts included.Another option is to use the android emulator, it can emulate the crome OS too. Look at the avd(android virtual device manager) It should be in your android sdk, if not, check in the sdk manager, you might have forgotten to install the package with the emulator. If the command line doesn't work, I am afraid you will have to use an ide like android studio or vs with xamarin tools, which is a pain in the but for anyone who doesn't do programming in android land.

Hi.I don't know much about it, but I have had my hands on a Chrome book before. In answer to your first question, the screen reader is called ChromeVox, and it comes built into the OS. Just press Control Alt Z to enable it.As for how good it is, it may have improved, but the last time I used it I did not have a good experience

@MyDearWatson: If you are talking about Fide OS, I was always suspicious of that package. It somehow did get the Google Play package, but who's to say if that extra telemetry can be disabled fully. It looks legal/legit considering it is China's Chrome OS distribution of choice, but still, lots of questions.

I don't like the default Google TTS voice, and if that's the only U.S. option, I may not get something running Chrome OS. That's the main reason I can't use Cloud Ready for extended periods of time.

Re: Best Chrome Box for keeping up with Chrome OS

No. You cannot run android apps on Chrome OS unless it is the official oem distribution, which none of the open source distributions are. The Android Runtime for Chrome is proprietary code. That being said, any recent chrome laptop should run android apps just fine. Chrome-box is older and definitely not as common anymore since not many people are after them. There even used to be the chromebit that was simply a chromecast-like device that ran Chrome OS that plugged into your tv.

Best Chrome Box for keeping up with Chrome OS

Hi all,I'd like to dip my toe into Chrome OS land and am wondering which Chrome Box to purchase? I'd rather not get something too expensive, since it's pointless to me when most of the idea is to run web applications. Here are my questions.1. Can I get something for under $200 that will last at least a few years?2. Can I change the default voice ChromeVox uses? It's the awful female Google TTS voice, and I'd like to try something else if possible. What voices are available?3. I'd like to get a Chrome Box that supports Android apps. How accessible is the experience?4. For Chrome OS devices that support Linux apps, is this accessible?I've tried Neverware Cloud Ready, but it isn't quite the same as Chrome OS from what I can tell. I'd like to try official Chrome OS, but don't want another laptop.

Re: Thoughts On Accessible Gaming, Via Chrome OS And GNU/Linux

My problem with Linux is this. Linux is free, as in free speech. As in free speech, there is free speech that is good, bad, and speech that directly goes against the blind, like "we want this app to be as pretty as possible, and don't have time to add accessibility support." Linux, fundamentally, can never be completely accessible unless all developers agree on it, and they *never* will, not all of them.I tried Linux again a few weeks ago, on Fedora 29. I got everything working fine, even PPSSPP works okay, except that the L and R buttons don't work on my Xbox controller...I got accessibility set up fine, except OcrDesktop relies on X11, and Fedora comes with Wayland by default and I didn't want to mess with another config file...I got Wi-fi and sound set up the way I want, except the Gnome setting center is pretty inaccessible...I got RH-voice installed, but Orca wouldn't use it...I got Emacspeak installed, but Voxin wasn't available for Fedora 29, 28, 27, 26...All these problems lead to a simple answer, Linux just isn't good enough for me. Before Fedora, I also tried Slint, which uses older packages for just about everything, and is not friendly for a beginner. To put this on games topic, there are very few games for Linux because few blind people use Linux, for good reason really, unless they really hate Windows that badly and believe Apple to be spying on its users. One last thing: I remember reading on an email list that blind computer users shouldn't use a operating system chiefly because of ideals. I second that, as Linux is always going to be behind in accessibility unless more thought is given to it by developers of desktops, applications, and window managers, and this inaccessibility is why people don't use, or develop, for Linux.

Re: Thoughts On Accessible Gaming, Via Chrome OS And GNU/Linux

Yeah linux has that at the moment, but also keep in mind it'll run just fine on 15 year old computers ment for xp. Besides, cross-platform developement is not super hard, if you are already doing Windows and mac getting it working under linux should not take that much more time. There are linux distro's that don't require a lot of tweaking for a normal user like ubuntu, but accessibility can break under linux, and there's no company to blame since it's all vollenteers. On the other side though, you and only you decide what software you get. The capabilities of your hardware are the limit, not your operating system. You can't unlock features in linux for a price. In Windows or Mac Os, if you don't like something, too bad. In linux, just install another desktop, distro, whatever.

I'd actually like to know a bit more myself... I was hesitant to try macs but gave them a shot when I got the opportunity.  To me, linux seems like, well, like a daunting pile of blocks that require more push and shove than I'm used to.  Of course, I realize I'm speaking from the point of a spoiled brat who always just, has computers work rather than having to go and make them work, which is the way Linux seems to me.  I get it, Linux powers lightbulbs, fridges, televisions, the world... OK!  Cool!  But to get all of that complexity out of it there seems to be a massive tweeking requirement involved, unless I'm fundamentally missing something.

Re: Thoughts On Accessible Gaming, Via Chrome OS And GNU/Linux

@nolan, the reason I asked about "practical good", was not to bash linux anymore than I was attempting to bash the mac nor to claim there is anything wonderful about windows, nor to decry anyone who uses Linux, again as you said yourself why can't we just have a rational discussion here? For myself, the first question I ask about any computer is "so what does it do!" What games can I play,  will it help me browse the net or write better, does it do anything particular that another platform does not? I never considered getting an Iphone until I saw all the aps, games etc available for the platform. I decided to get windows 10 rather than a mac because it seemed that I'd need to be using emulation on a mac to play a lot of games and so on. I just ask the same question as regarding Linux as I'd ask of any other computer setup. if unfortunately the only answer is "well some people like it because they like it and that is that", then there is not much else to say, but equally not much else to recommend Linux to someone looking at it from another platform either as indeed you implied with your cheese burger example. Hope this makes sense.

Re: Thoughts On Accessible Gaming, Via Chrome OS And GNU/Linux

I mean, what practical good does a chese burger have? Why should I eat a chese burger for lunch instead of, say, a bowl of chili or pasta? You can give me reasons, but at the end of the day they're *your* reasons. I can tell you why *I* run Linux, you can tell me how those reasons aren't valid or accurate because Windows... But what would be the point? At the end of the day it's really a matter of what anyone finds more productive. Besides, the points you've referenced in your message apply to me. I've used computers for three decades, have a solid understanding of how they work, and prefer Linux/Linux-based platforms to everything else, and that's after spending years trying to use Windows 7/8/10 daily. So your description applies to me, and because it does, I use the platform you say would be appropriate for me, and gaming is just one of many things I do with my computers. If you're happy with Windows, and that's practical for *you*, then nothing I say should matter and we should continue using our choices.Sorry, I'd just like to see a "I use a non-mainstream OS, let's talk about how to make it work for X" thread without everyone having to justify their choices. If this isn't that thread and we should open another, that's fine. But invariably threads like this on *any* blindness-related forum tend in that direction, and it'd be nice to have an exception.

I'm afraid for Linux this is a particular question, since Linux is so much built from the ground up and requiring  a heavy amount of understanding and customising to use, the only people I've tended to run into using Linux are people with an intrinsic interest in information technology itself and how all the back end components of an os works. Heck, whenever people start talking about Linux it seems like almost the classic Wittgenstein definition of a language game .That is fair enough if its people's interest, I'm certainly not going to knock someone for having their own preferences, but for myself, whose interest with any sort of information technology always starts with the practical question "okay so what can I do with it" Linux seems rather like a lot of extra effort for less than tangible benefits, especially considering that at least several of the open source solutions for linux are not quite up to the same standard as windows (I tried Liber office and Writer and sad to say found it not up to the standard I'd expect in MS word). I also recall Tom Ward noting that Orca voice wise wasn't ideal as a screen reading platform, and he was a habitual linux user albeit he ran a windows machine at the same time, though manifestly that was in 2014 and matters likely have changed a lot since then.

@8Yes, cyclepath does work on a Chromebook, same goes for many HTML5 audio titles. Though, make sure the Chrome OS device is a highly specked out one, especially for running "Android" games.Well, I guess it depends on the games in question. For example, playing  any of the Choice Of Games titles from the Chrome Web Store

Re: Thoughts On Accessible Gaming, Via Chrome OS And GNU/Linux

What about cyclepath? If cyclepath works, which it probably will, then the way to get this done is to get people to use _javascript_ and electron. Or python, but that will still require more work to be done for cross-platform games. If adoption is to be boosted with new devs, an audiogaming guide will greatly help, since the bgt language tutorial is so streight-forward compared to something like learning electron. Bgt also works for just about everyone, since you either use Windows or learn to use wine if you don't use Windows, **provided** the game is not very complicated (3d audio won't be coming to bgt cleanly). Not many people are willing to do the work though, including me.

Re: What is the search key in Chromevox on Chrome OS?

I had to figure this out for an old-ish cloudReady install that still used the classic keyboard layout. Chrome vocs has different keyboard layouts depending on what version you are running. If you are using a classic layout, the key modifier for the chrome vocs key is shift plus windows. Shift windows q twice will switch to the next keyboard layout. I hope this helps.

Try pressing that plus another key, or press it twice for sticky mode. If not, maybe try alt.

Re: Chrome OS in a virtual machine?

go here to download vm imagesThere are images for both vmware and workstation. I've tested one on fusion 8, and it works fine. When importing the first time, it will throw an error at you saying the vm doesn't pass ovf hardware specifications, but that's only to be expected since vmware doesn't really know the operating system it's about to run. Just hit retry to relax the specifications and it should import properly. Leave the operating system type at other, it doesn't matter if vmware knows or not, it'll still run. After a few seconds, hit ctrl+alt+z. This is definitely true for using a mac, but may be for other keyboards as well, just experiment. The alt key is option on the mac. But for all other keyboards, if windows doesn't work, try alt. You'll know because if you do it time you'll hea
r a chime and speech will come up a few seconds later. Make sure to select ethernet as your network type to utilize the network adapter.

Re: chrome os

ChromeOS has ChromeVox and you don't install a third-party screen reader. Are you talking about using Chrome on some desktop platform? Then the support is ... flaky, at best. It's probably the best on Mac, but the experience is still not up to par with Windows screen readers with either Firefox or IE, in my limited experience.
