Re: question about coffie

@Turtlepower I'm not crazy on cream (my lady actively abhores it), though I don't like too sweet so those things don't sute me at all. I have had a couple of passable coffee syrups but with those you really do need to be careful with what you buy and from where, since as you said, more often than not they just taste of sugar. While I admit grinding the beans myself is a little excessive, (though okay once your used to it), making coffee with pre ground stuff in the cafeteir is really no harder than using a filter or making tea in a teapot. You just spoon your grounds into the pot, boil the kettle, (then if your wise wait for a minute or two for the water to be off boiling), then fill the cafeteir and leave for five minutes or so. You then put the top on the cafeteir and gently press the plunger which pushes all the grounds to the bottom so that you don't end up with a mouth full of granuals which isn't nice, then you pour it out.I admit this is easier with an electric kettle, actually i find the way that so many people in this country turn on the hob to just heat water sort of loopy, Kettles are one thing I miss from living in Britain, particularly since it means to make tea for my lady in the morning I need to microwave the water which doesn't work too well.

Re: question about coffie

I always drink my coffee black, and this is just typical ground coffee that you get at the store. I certainly have no objections to trying something, shall we say, of higher quality, but it's just easier to scoop some grounds into a filter and go. Preparing coffee any other way just isn't something I'm used to. having said that, instant coffee is absolutely disgusting, and something I would never touch with a 10 foot pole no matter how much sugar and creamer I poured into it.Also, I hate these flavored creamers that most people I know seem to like so much. They're overly sweet, and taste so artificial.

Re: question about coffie

One thing to bare in mind Bryan, is that coffee can be burned. There is a protein on the beans that denatures at 98 degrees. Therefore you should never make coffee with boiling water, and be careful when grinding the beans that you don't create so much heat from friction that you burn them. If the coffee is harsh or bitter tasting, it is usually because the beans have been burnt in this way, coffee made properly should be smooth and more than possible to drink black without cream (sugar is optional, I don't though some do).I first noticed this when, making coffee by hand, grinding in a manual grinder and then using the cafeteir,  the coffee was waay! nicer, so I went and did some research.I've now got friends who don't drink black coffee, unless I make it.I've noticed here in the states both cafeteirs, and electric kettles are far less common, meaning making good coffee is much harder. My lady's sister for example ha
s a filter system, which forces hot steam through a filter with the beans in and lets it condence into the cot, which to my mind produces passable coffee, but not half as nice as doing the thing yourself. So, i'd suggest getting it made properly by hand and then! trying it with nothing, since you might be surprised, though again over here that seems much more difficult than it does in Britain.

Re: question about coffie

Ah yes, that old myth. My mother used to tell me that one when I was little. But even without drinking coffee for most of my life I'm rather small for a man at least by American standards, being only about 5'7 or so. In fact I only started drinking coffee within the last year or so, and I just turned 36 this June. But even when I do drink it it has to have creamer in it since I detest the taste of straight coffee, ironic really since I've always loved the smell of a freshly-brewed pot, as much because of its associations I suspect as the smell itself. The same holds true for popcorn but that's a whole nother story.

Re: question about coffie

That sounds sensible Turtlepower. Most people I think who the "Coffee is bad for you" thing fall under tend to be corporate office types who begin the day with a coffee, go to work and have a coffee when they get there, then accompany any meetings they have during the day with another coffee. One executive I heard of reputedly was drinking as many as twelve cups of filter coffee a day, enough to the point that the stuff became actually toxic to him and was having an affect similar to cocaine on his personality, ie, getting him so hyped up he became amazingly aggressive, nasty and abrasive. That however is manifestly a very extreme case indeed!

Re: question about coffie

Well, I suppose I'm another person who has a bit of an addiction to coffee, although I've always been of the opinion that moderation is key in just about everything you do. As such, while I have to have a cup or two of coffee to get myself going every day, that's usually all i have per day. I will sometimes have a third cup in the afternoon, particularly if I'm having one of my all too frequent battles with insomnia, and have the urge to crash during the afternoon. That's not a habit I'll let myself get into, and I would rather force myself to stay awake than get myself into an even screwier sleep pattern. As far as I've read, moderate amounts of coffee can actually have some health benefits, so I comfort myself with that fact. I'm sure if I ever got to the point where I felt I absolutely had to drink more coffee to feel alert, I would try to cut back. But, seeing as how this has been my morning ritual for quite a few years, I'm n
ot too concerned about stopping it.

@Nibar, laughing at your mum is probably not a good idea. I've noticed in the states people often have some very strongly held beliefs, particularly rather conservative ones, indeed just yesterday when we were swimming with my wife's sister's eleven year old granddaughter, my wife's sister got distinctly uptight when I recommended the rather nice iced coffee icecream I'd had. Quite amusing given the fact that said girl rather likes coffee herself. Simply explain rationally to your mother that you have researched the matter and are aware the article is not speaking the truth, and that you also understand coffee has the potential to be addictive and don't intend to drink to exess, as epicurus said, everything in moderation. @Hrvoje, that is exactly why I tend to have a few weeks off coffee occasionally. The first week is a bit irritating, but it's generally okay after that, once my body gets used to not having that in the morning
. I usually drink one cafeteir full, ie, about two cups in the morning. Sometimes I'll make a second cafeteir later in the day as well and thus drink about four cups. I have been drinking more coffee in the states, about three cups in the morning (albeit spread out over around three or four hours), but equally the filter machine used over here doesn't make it as strong as I tend to likee it. I have got to the point in the past when I can drink coffee late at night and be fine, and I still do like a coffee (especially a coffee with rum or wisky or some other liquor), after a large meal, but I still prefer to leave off the coffee in the evening most of the time and switch to tea or coco after around six in the evening.

Re: question about coffie

Well I drink coffee for probably 15 or 14 years (now I'm 29) and I'm coffee dependent. I think the only bad thing is that coffee to some people also brings dependency like cigarets, alcohole and drugs do, since I can't function properly as well until I drink my cup of coffee after I wake up in the morning. The morning coffee is the most important for me and that's the first thing that I must take before doing anything else. Additionally, I can drink coffee even in the late evening, and after that I can sleep normally with no problem! That's why my friends were laughing at us when me and my friend had drank coffee on 11 PM on vacation. One coffee aday is mainly enough for me, but usually I drink two aday, and sometimes even three (it all depends on situation).

@Slender, I do drink tea in the afternoon and evening if I want to relax and am feeling muggy, though I'm a very atypical Englishman since I only ever like a few sorts of tea such as rose and jasmin, and I more often than not drink coffee, though in a little while I'll go and get my lady a cup of tea and a rasberry scone which she will like since coffee doesn't agree with her stomach. I do occasionally go on a coffee abstenence, just to prove I can, I used to give it up for lent. I'll probably do another one of those in september and try a month without coffee to unadict myself.

Yep, I drank coffee all of my life and I never had a problem with growth at all, sounds like a very loopy myth to me. Of course, there is coffee and coffee! and that is a hole other story, actually one of the few things I miss from England while I'm in America is actual kettles that plug into the wall and a cafeteir as opposed to the electric coffee maker. it's okay, but imho the cafeteir does a far better job. Even as far as  caffein goes, there are far worse things these days than coffee, in particular all those energy drinks that also load things up with sugar and random artificial aditives and goodness knows what. A hot cup of coffee after a very large meal can actually help you digest what you've eaten and e good for the stomach, the only thing is to make sure not to have it too late at night.
