Yeah, that doesn't work on pixel. Gives an error about too many links and boots right back into regular android. Out of curiosity, are you running android 10?

You have bootloader unlocked right? then turn off the device and hold the power buton and volume up to enter fast boot mode. Here are some comands you can try. One of them should work. Replace the TWRP version with your ownfastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-alpha2-fastboot-sailfish.imgfastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-alpha2-fastboot-marlin.imgSamsung flashing is a lot easier.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

Hey all,Bringing this thread back from the dead as I've been having trouble finding answers to this on the net.Basically, I need to install twrp on my pixel in order to decrypt /data, thanks to a certain screen reader not giving me speech after reboot. However, when I do fastboot boot path/to/twrpImgFile when in the bootloader, I'm given an error, something about too many links, and the phone boots back into regular android. I assume this is something to do with android 10's new AB partitioning blah blah blah, but I was wondering if anyone here knows of any workarounds for this? Thanks.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

In the future, you might want to look at Paranoid Android, as it's making a welcome return. Once it hits the Pixel devices that is, as it was announced just yesterday. The Google Apps are supposedly included in this one too, so you may not even have to deal with Gapps installations. Which means there *may* be Talkback built in.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

I finally managed to get the system up and running. I ended up flashing Lineage OS with MicroG included and then had sighted assistance via Be My Eyes help me enable USB Debugging and turn on TalkBack. A few questions before I'm done with this topic:When I check for updates in the system update function, it says Lineage OS 16 April 4 2020 is available. I thought I already installed this version from the website, so why is it appearing again? Is this the official Lineage image or the update from the forked project with MicroG? Will installing it brick my device?I was able to install an apk file from the files app. How do I control which apps can install apk files? I thought there was a setting to control the installation of unknown apps, but I can't find it anywhere.I installed the Yalp forked version from F-Droid. Will it allow me to access all my Google Play apps without any issues? I haven't signed into it yet. Thanks for all the help. While I didn't get the Magisk script to work, I was able to extract the TalkBack and eSpeak apks from the zip and install them via adb. Now I know an effective way of doing this, even if it is a little inconvenient to get someone to help me with onscreen controls. I don't know why the recovery method wasn't working. I suspect it's because Lineage Recovery was overwriting TWRP. When I tried installing TWRP again, it must clear everything else out, so it seems the best thing to do is install the rom via TWRP and then going through the system to enable USB Debugging.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

On the Lineage OS page for installing the system on the Pixel, it says this. "NOTE: On Windows systems, thanks to a bug in fastboot, you must first swap to slot a with fastboot set_active a, then specify slot a when flashing images, e.g. fastboot flash boot_a .img"Is there something I'm doing wrong? Do I need to format both partitions and select the correct one to correctly install the Google Apps and the system? I did fastboot format system, but do I need to do fastboot format system_a and fastboot format system_b as well? I think these A/B partitions are confusing me too much and might be the cause of the problem. If I can flash the Full Google Apps package correctly, I should have all the applications including TalkBack.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

You should be able to update Lineage over the air, though major new builds will need reflashing, if I remember correctly there won't be a need for a data wipe though.Google had made so many changes to the way Gapps are managed. One time they required devices to be registered with a code online in order to be liensed for Gapps, yet Lineage is still going around with gapps. It's a confusing process and I blame Cyanogen's commercialization for it, because romming is just not as worth it as it used to be.

This explains why TalkBack never appeared in Accessibility settings. It also explains why I had no text-to-speech engines installed until I installed eSpeak using ADB. What now? Why did the Google apps fail to install? Is it not possible to update the system over the air? I can't find any way to check for system updates. If I have to manually flash each new image and get help with TalkBack, this is going to get old really fast. I can't believe how ridiculous this whole process was. I'd hate to constantly ask someone to enable ADB and USB debugging. Why is this a never-ending series of problems?

HDude. It isn't that hard. Just change your google account password when you're done. This situation sucks, but when you've exhausted all your options, what else can you do?Once you install Talkback from the Play STore, you should be able to convert it into a system app.Maybe you can have aira help you pair a Bluetooth keyboard so you do not have to get a usb keyboard if you don't have one. Then you can enter your google account password without having to worry about it being revealed.

Sorry for this post, but using adb sideload doesn't work. I was able to get sighted assistance and choosing yes on the signature verification screen, I'm presented with another error that states the talkback.zip file is invalid or something like that. At this point, I have to assume either I'm not supposed to use adb sideload, this file doesn't work with the Pixel, or I'm doing something wrong. Any more ideas? This is ridiculous! It's shouldn't be this difficult to get a screen reader working. I can install the ROM just fine, but the screen reader isn't working and I'm not in the mood to have someone help me install TalkBack from the Play Store. Fuck this! I'm not purchasing anymore Android devices!Thank you to everyone that has tried to help me. I really mean that and am not mad at anyone here. If you have anymore ideas, I may try them, but I'm about ready to smash this phone with a hammer. It's not receiving anymore official software updates, and I can't make it accessible with a custom ROM without going through ridiculous hoops! I can accept needing help to find TalkBack in Accessibility settings or installing a custom zip, but when both methods have failed and the devs of these ROMs are unable and/or unwilling to build accessibility in, I'm done.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

When I boot into recovery, there is an option about sideloading. If I tap the sideload option, the unauthorized message goes away, but I can't use adb shell or anything like that. What now? I don't totally understand this.I'm starting to wonder if this is worth it. I managed to start sideloading the TalkBack zip, but there was apparently a screen saying something about a failed signature and yes/no options asking if I wanted to continue. I tried getting someone to tell me where to move my finger, but it didn't really work. Fuck these really tiny touch targets! The information barrier is beyond infuriating! I suppose my only choice is to get someone with working eyeballs to help me in person. They can probably do it much faster than I can with Be My Eyes and/or Aira. I feel a little bad for wasting the time of a few people. Fuck, why does this have to be so difficult? Why can't I use adb if I boot into TWRP directly on the phone? Hi Chris, you're doing everything right until you install the talkback zip. The updater is failing because although magisk is installed, the module does not know that until you reboot into recovery a second time so the magisk patches are loaded into the ramdisk. After you install twrp first, then magisk, run:adb reboot recoveryAfter you get your adb device back and are in twrp's shell, install the talkback zip:adb shell twrp install /sdcard/talkback.zipYou should see the following in your log:your rom is based on an android version higher than android 8.0, removing talkback legacy. Please let me know if you have any other issues. Yeah, sounds like someone should go get a usb keyboard or use a 2.4ghz dongle to connect a keyboard to the phone...Getting someone to enter your google account details is trivial, just change your password to something totally different aftewrods. That is, if Hacker's solution is not working - you may need to start over from the beginning from a stock rom before trying his solution.@Nidza07 re: Talkback: It's true that it isn't part of AOSP, but unlike Google Apps, it does not require a gms license to distribute. It then, in a way, is distributeable, and someone did submit a (never answered) pull request to get it included. And there is nothing proprietary about the accessibility shortcut when it worked just fine in previous Cyanogen builds before 11.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

It should be in the accessibility settings. If it's not, it means that you did not install it correctly. However, if your system boots correctly and you can get sighted help, you can install Talkback from the play store. It won't be installed as a system app, but it will work normally. The only disadvantage to doing it this way is that if you ever perform a factory reset, Talkback won't be installed as it will be a part of your user data partition.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

Nah, lineage is perfectly willing to cooperate with us, but they  can't include Talkback due to the licencing issues. Talkback is in fact open source but isn't part of AOSP. At one point I have communicated with one of the developers who submitted a pull request to Google which was never accepted, so clearly they don't have any intentions to make Talkback part of AOSP. The best thing to do would be to use Stock Opengapps which  include Talkback. If you find them too bloated with other apps you do not need, you can create a config file to exclude those apps which is what I always did when flashing. The issue with talkback not enabling correctly on the setup screen is also something Lineage would be willing to fix but we can't get any info from Google, and clearly something proprietary is different in the open source distribution of Android compared to the ones given to phone manufacturers. However, I think it's rather the fact Talkback is flashed afterwards and not built in, since in accessibility settings it's supposed to be a part of the screen readers category, however it's not and on custom roms it goes to the other services. So if Google defines some clear standard for this it might work one day, but for now various workarounds have to be used. Flashing as a blind person is a lot harder than it used to be. I've never even had a phone with A/B partitioning scheme so won't even get into that, but I will just compare my two Samsungs. The Galaxy S5 I had, it was enough to just flash the recovery, format and flash the zip files right away. However, on my S7, the data partition was encripted so it could not be formatted like that. You had to flash the recovery, then format data with the help of a sighted person since there's no ADB command and then you can flash. Each time you reinstall the stock firmware that encription would reset and you'd need sighted help again. There is a way to do it without sighted help, but that's only due to a sideeffect where CF  auto root formats the data partition when rooting the device, but that tool is outdated and probably does not even work on newer Samsung devices. Pixel is probably easier though, or at least I hope so.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

Because of the a/b partitioning scheme and the fact you can't just throw things into /system/app from the start like you used to.ineage should honestly quit stalling and freaking include Talkback in the rom like we asked them to years ago. But to be fair, a lot of the blind romming community as we know it has become about as fragmented as jailbreaking itself, with most of the enthusiasts either switching to iPhone, or sticking with stock seeing as the benefits of running custom beyond squeezing life into your device have gotten so much slimmer. Part of that is definitely Cyanogen's fault, part of it is the change in lockscreens killing off slider shortcuts (remember slide left to unlock and go straight to the dialer?) and Android changing so much over the years towards a look but don't touch open source. The biggest buzz-kill has to be the commercialization of Cyanogen though, that was a practical death-blow to the organized rom community.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

Hi, to set up lineage or any custom rom without sited assistance, you need several files:fastboot and adb available from the android sdkIf installing on the scurge of the earth, aka windows, fastboot and adb driversa build of TWRP for your devicethe zip of the rom you're going to flashthe zip installer of the magisk root and systemless interface, available from:https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/rel … -v20.3.zipmy talkback installer magisk module, available from:https://nashcentral.duckdns.org/projects/talkback.zipafter you download everything, enable usb debugging on your current rom, make sure that you select always allow from this computer in the authorization dialog, may be important later, connect your phone to the computer, and run:adb reboot bootloaderOnce your phone reconnects, it will be in bootloader mode. If you've never installed a custom recovery before, your device's bootloader will be in the locked state. To unlock the bootloader, run:fastboot oem unlockDepending on your device, a visual prompt with no audible confirmation will be displayed, asking if you're sure you want to unlock the bootloader, it'll void your warranty, etc. To get past this screen and confirm the unlock, for most devices, press and release volume up, and press power. If you did it correctly, you will get a prompt from fastboot that says erasing userdata done. Once you get kicked back to the prompt, type the following for devices without a/b partitioning, i.e. devices that do not need to restart into recovery to install OTAS:fastboot flash recovery /path/to/twrp.imgOnce the command completes, most devices require you to select boot recovery in the bootloader menu. If you reboot, the stock rom will replace your brand spanking new twrp with the ramdisk copy of the stock recovery, how rude! For most devices, to select boot recovery, hit volume up twice and power to select. For a/b devices, the situation is more complicated. A/b devices require downloading two twrp files, one image file and another twrp installer zip. Once you have those files and an unlocked bootloader, run:fastboot boot /path/to/twrp.imgAfter a few seconds, you can run:adb shellif you get a ~# prompt, congratulations, you are now in twrp! Regardless of how you get to twrp, the next step is to get all of those zips on your phone. Thanks to adb's push command, moving those files is as easy as kicking ass and chewing bubblegum, when you're all out of gum! Duke Nukem reference asside, to save yourself a huge amount of typing later, if you have an a/b device, push the twrp installer first by doingadb push /path/to/twrp.zip /sdcard/twrp.zipNext, install that file, you need to put a full path, since twrp's installation logic is a bit wierd:adb shell twrp install /sdcard/twrp.zipIf it finished, your ramdisk is patched, so as long as you install your rom before the next reboot, you're as good as gravy. Now let's get that rom installed, same as beforeadb push /path/to/rom.zip /sdcard/rom.zipadb shell twrp install /sdcard/rom.zipWith our rom installed, let's get dangerous, I mean let's get rooted. Time to install magisk, if it fails with some obscure error, reboot into recovery so the rom's kernel is active by running:adb reboot recoveryadb push /path/to/magisk.zip /sdcard/magisk.zipadb install /sdcard/magisk.zipIf you're as paranoyed as me, you probably want microg instead of google play services and you don't really need/want the play store, but let's assume you aren't, no matter how you want your rom, security focused or with a side of google, you can still get the same accessibility either way. If you want the google apps, pick any package, lighter may be better, you're going to put the screen reader and a tts in in a bit, to install gapps, it's the same drill:adb push /path/to/gapps.zip /sdcard/gapps.ziptwrp install /sdcard/gapps.zipNow that we have our rooted rom with or without gapps, time to make this badboy accessible, ey? Install the talkback installer the same way as any other zip:adb push /path/to/talkback.zip /sdcard/talkback.zipadb shell twrp install /sdcard/talkback.zipThis installs both espeak and talkback into magisk's module directory, which, once android finishes booting, appears to be a part of /system. Since espeak does not support direct boot, if you set a screen lock that relies on the virtual keyboard, install GoogleTTS or any other tts that has this support after enabling the screen lock, or you will need to non surgically borrow eyeballs to unlock your phone every time you power it on. Finally, reboot your device:adb rebootOnce android comes up, use the accessibility shortcut which has been enabled by my module and talkback will start talking. If you just get earcons but no speech after waiting a few seconds, reboot your phone and you'll have speech.

I think so? I erased the data partition, used adb push update2.zip /data/ and then typed twrp install update2.zip after first installing update1.zip. In this case, update1.zip is the package for Lineage OS and update2.zip is the stock Open Google Apps package. Did I do something wrong? Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

I don't have a USB keyboard right now. Here's my next question. Where can I get a zip file containing the latest version of TalkBack? I'm thinking about flashing it directly using TWRP since the Google Apps package I downloaded didn't seem to have it even though it said it was in there. What a mess! I repeated the same flashing process again and was told once again that there was no entry for TalkBack under Accessibility settings.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

You may not have to. If you have a usb keyboard plus a type converter, you can plug it into your phone and being using it. Then you can call Aira and arrow your way to the account setup, since they can see the screen of your phone without you having to perform gestures. Then once you're at the username field, you can just type in your own username no problem. Then hit enter and type in your password. Then it should sign you in.Who knows, maybe the Google Apps package didn't fully install, or there is a permissions conflict. This is all Cyanogen's fault for ruining an otherwise good open-source project by becoming entirely closed source commercial, leaving them wwith a skeleton crew of a remaining team (it's no wonder Lineage is behind on versions).

Sorry for the rant, but things like that irritate me like crazy! It's sad that the Samsung Galaxy S5 can still run Android 9 via Lineage, while Samsung gave up somewhere around Marshmallow.I'm not worried about bricking the phone. I can always flash the official image by putting the phone in Fastboot mode and running the flash script. I just want toknow why TalkBack isn't appearing under Accessibility settings even though the stock Google Apps package listed Android Accessibility Suite as one of the included apps. Did I do something wrong somewhere? There's no way I'm giving anyone my Google credentials to get access to the Play Store.

If any of you know of a phone with longer support than the pixel, I'd love to hear about it, excluding apple's crap of course. I love my pixel 3, but I really hate the stupid AB partition shit. It's enough to make me potentially consider switching moddles when I get a new phone next year. I've thought about samsung because of the hardware, but of course their support is absolutely shit. That's exactly the reason for I previously mentioned that I would be scared to do that without sighted help. I hope you have an other phone.I must at mid that I would consider switching to Android if the Pixel phones was supported for longer time. They are only supported for three years. Even the iPhones are supported for longer time. I'm still using my iPhone 7 with the latest operating system, and I bought the phone back in 2015.I'm not trying to make yet an other android vs. IOS discussion, but when it comes to Android phones, they are only supported for two or three years. So it might be better just to buy a cheep Samsung phone and trash it after two years.

I thought the Google Apps package I installed came with it. Shouldn't it be installed by default? Why isn't it appearing if it's installed? This is ridiculous! Now I'm less likely to consider purchasing another pixel, especially if I have to go with an older but cheaper model that will be dropped in a year or two anyway. All Google wants is money, just like every other company. It doesn't help they're trying to compete with Apple now, bleh!Oh, and I also don't appreciate the insanely difficult to remove battery. I'm considering whether it's worth my time and money to take the phone to a uBreakiFix store and have it replaced for $129. I don't blame them for charging that much. From what I hear, it's a bitch taking those things apart. The phone can run Android 10 just fine, and would probably run 11 as well, they just don't want to bother patching vulnerabilities anymore. I'm not throwing away perfectly good hardware just because someone at Google doesn't want to take the time to update it anymore. As much as I don't like Apple's business practices, I have to commend them for supporting their devices for about 5+ years. The original Pixel and probably all future models will only get 3 years of support. Stupid!

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

You *may* need to fastboot -w, though be advised that wipes absolutely everything, so make sure your rom is for the right model, and that you have a baseband upgrade if needed. fastboot -w is used when flashing a stock image as well, considering stock images are the only ones that can actually be flashed through fastboot. As such, hold onto that command, as it will be useful if something goes bust and you end up having to fall back to a stock rom.

The free software foundations doesn't give a rat's ass about accessibility as long as they are breaking away from anything and everything proprietary.. Don't get me wrong, FSF is a fine organization and the fight against proprietary stuff is valid, but there's nothing liberating about a libre m5 that isn't accessible because Orca doesn't have touch support, and no one wnats a phone with a keyboard anymore except folks who want a phone with a keyboard, which is not a powerful market force. Ironically so, you'd be better off getting a Planet Computers Gemini or Cosmo Communicator and installing Debian on that, you'd get Orca that way.Re: wiping: Probably a good idea to wipe the system in that case. Not sure if your pixel was the first to introduce duel partition, or if that was introduced in the Pixel2 which is what I have, but needless to say just be careful about that.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

Are we sure about @13's recommendation not to wipe the system? Does that not just install files over any already there? So maybe files that overwrite others work fine, but other cruft is left behind, and that's why you don't have enough space?Although, that is a bit of a small partition, so he may very well be spot on. It's been years since I've done much with ROMs, and so much of what you find is anecdotal and practically ritual (I.e. my thing with update1.zip/update2.zip just so I don't have to spout out a bunch of odd filenames for my girlfriend to parse.)I'd suggest wiping everything and trying again. If it doesn't work, drop to the smaller package and manually install TalkBack. I'd then look for something to link installed apps to the Play Store so you'd automatically get TB updates. I know Titanium Backup has that ability somewhere in its long overflow menu. I think it's called Market Doctor or Market Linking. Also, make sure you don't need a newer baseband, radio, or whatever Lineage calls them (I've seen both terms.) Those are generally shipped with official software updates, but I'm not sure they're part of Lineage. I've occasionally gotten burned by upgrading my ROM but not the baseband, then things get into an unbootable state as you've described.Wish this wasn't so fucking wild west. I want to buy a phone and install whatever OS I like on it, just as I do with my PC. While I'm at it I also want a unicorn... I suspect PostmarketOS/Pinephones aren't going to be accessible to us for a long while.

Or you can doadb shelthen type your twrp commands in one at a time. That way you can get status information about every operation, which is as close to doing it via the gui as it gets.RE, support: Yeah, that's pretty standard issue. Google supported the Pixel for a long, long time, given that it was out in 2016 and it's 2020 now. That's why Android is so good is because of its openness, Cyanogen apparently changed its opinion on that once they saw the $$$, which is typical (Fleksy went down this same path of caving to the corporate machine once they got mainstream attention). ANd other than the Pixel4, if I'm being brutally honest Google's hardware updates are actually freaking worth it. You may want to give the pixel3 a serious look since it's probably dropped massively in price.

If you're referring to the Google Apps packages from opengapps.org, I'm pretty sure the Nano package doesn't include TalkBack. Find out what each package includes by clicking the links after the radio buttons for the distributions (I.e. Aroma, Super, Stock, etc.) Note that you should probably start with lower distributions and move up, because IIRC the higher-capacity packages include lists of apps prepended with "Everything in Stock, Super, etc. plus:" meaning you need to check the app lists for the smaller distributions for a full list of what is in the larger. Pretty sure you need at least Stock to run TalkBack, so that should save you some clicks.Flashing a custom ROM is lots of work, though it is a good way to still use old hardware. Read about the openrecoveryscript feature of TWRP if you'd like to automate some actions. I'd still recommend sighted help, but you can at least write a script, push it to the device, and cut out the touchscreen interactions. My girlfriend isn't particularly tech-savvy but I can usually give her useful directions to navigate the TWRP process. But if that isn't an option for you, you can at least write a script and have your help tell you what happens, then iterate on that process until you're done. Eventually, once you've got a script that works, you can generally automate the process entirely by correctly placing your zips. One tip I've found is to always name zips update1.zip, update2.zip, etc. based on the order you'd like to flash them. They then appear ordered in the file manager, and it's generally easier to tell a sighted helper to click on update1.zip, etc. than "First click lineageos-16.1-pixel3.zip, then gapps-super-whatever.zip..." You can also use that tip to make your openrecoveryscripts more easily reusable. Just put your zips in the storage location in the correct order, then add/remove script lines as needed.

Regarding the point about google dropping support for their phones? Hate to break it to you but that's pretty much how it works in the android world. In fact I'm pretty sure google have supported their stuff for the longest so far.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

You can use twrp through adb to install the rom through the command line no problem. You use this same method to install the gapps arm64 package. What you cannot do is modify the settings through the command line like you used to since the settings are encrypted. The accessibility shortcut has been broken since Cyanogen mod 11, and Lineage is basically Cyanogen where we left off before the team split up and Cyanogen became a commercial venture. The rom community as we know it has been blown to bits nearly as effectively as the organized jailbreak community has, since Cyanogen was probably the only well-oiled machine in the rom community. IT was a little too well-run though seeing as it got all those endorsements later on.If you have another phone/tablet, Aira your way through enabling talkback. It should, in theory, take less than 5 minutes if you skip the initial google signin to enable Talkback, so the call can be free for you.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

I'd rather not run a version of Android that's not getting regular security patches. I'm also not buying another Pixel because they're absurdly expensive and I'm not supporting Google's arbitrary "Let's drop software support so people buy new devices" philosophy. I know Google Play can sort of update system components now with Android 10, but that's not a full solution as far as I know.If I'm understanding this correctly, I should get the full Google Apps ARM64 package for Android 9? Does this include TalkBack? Why can't I enable TalkBack with the accessibility shortcut after installing Lineage OS? Finally, is there a way to install this using only the command line? I was reading something about using touch screen controls with TWRP recovery, but I'd rather not do that since getting sighted assistance might be a little difficult at the moment.

Re: Installing Lineage OS on my first generation Google Pixel

Meh. Android Pay is not as widely adopted, so losing that is not a huge price to pay. Paypal should work fine as well. Also, there used to be a very efficient way to enable Talkback. Even if you get it installed through the full Google Apps package, settings are encrypted in the new versions of Android, so the old settings.db trick to enable Talkback does not work anymore. You are going to need sighted help to enable it.
