Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

@69, no clue why, its just what they decided to do. If I were them I'd put it through a lot of QA before I released it but I'm not them. Its stable -- or as stable as it can be right now anyway... I've never seen it crash or over-use resources. The resource issue is an electron problem and unrelated to Skype, so the team that works on Skype can't do anything about that. The tam that works on Electron though can... I do believe they're working on that, not sure when it'll be finished though.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

We all knew it was going to eventually happen. When Microsoft controls all the servers and the system itself, what do you expect? I don't like the new Skype 8 either, although I've gotten used to it. If you really don't like it, switch to another VOIP service or make your own. Microsoft isn't going to change this any time soon, despite the numerous complaints from sighted people. My major problems with Skype are that it doesn't support stereo audio, and you can't disable the audio processing to send unmodified audio from your recording devices. Maybe I've spent too long using Zoom and Team Talk, but there really is a noticable improvement in audio quality on both of those systems. Why Microsoft hasn't addressed this when they could choose to do so at any time is beyond me.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

I'd like to point out that the CPU usage spiking is most likely due to electron and not due to Skype itself. Electron has resources issues like that (I believe that if you did the same thing in Slac, Discord and so on, you'd get identical results). As for split screen view, I don't think Skype 8 has it yet (in the electron version anyway), but the electron version has the capability of creating new windows. I don't know, however, whether that would double the CPU usage or make the resource usage spike dramatically. And yes, Skype 8 is pretty much alpha software; in the electron window it does say "Skype preview" so...@jade, I sincerely apologize if my attempts to explain my stance of "use the latest versions of everything" failed your expectations. I have always had a problem with using deprecated and/or out of date software, as I am one who is greatly concerned about the security of my computer. This attitude also (might) stem from the fact that I love Arch Linux and I, on that particular OS, always have the latest software. There are of course drawbacks to this, one of which is that I suffer he bugs and issues earlier than everyone else who doesn't use Arch Linux, but I am glad to suffer those bugs because I am happy to help out and contribute.I have heard some interesting issues with Skype 8 that people have had, one of which is the fact that people claim that it jumps their cursor around all over the place. I haven't suffered most of the issues I've heard about "everyone" supposedly having, which is odd. Perhaps I've been blessed? I also learned new things about the keyboard shortcuts for Skype -- thanks!

Oh. you said sending files, a really practical way of sending files in skype7 was to right click the file you want to send, click send to, then skype. Can you do that with8? Nope. And global shortcuts are gone as well. No more sound customization either. Also when someone calls you a window pops up, which interrupts whatever you're doing, an annoyance when gaming. You answer the call, alt tab back real quick, and a second window which contains call controls pops up right in front of you to interrupt your game once again. Those are my irritations.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

Admittedly I only use Skype to chat some people, I haven't made a call in a while, and I've never done it with Skype 8. Hmm, I might try one tonight though. I kinda want to catch up with a buddy I haven't spoken to in a while. It will be interesting.I upgraded a few months ago after reformatting my PC. This was the last week of December, iirc it was around the time when you had to install a special version of Skype 7 for it to work, so I had to make a choice. Go hunting for that version, or download Skype 8 and get used to that. I chose the latter because I really wasn't in the mood to hassle through unfamiliar web sites. I've had bad experiences with that. I'll do it if I really want something that I can't get any other way, but with Skype, I'd rather just do things the proper way. The last thing I want is to be typing a message in the middle of a great conversation and then all of a sudden they pull the plug on old Skype. I was expecting Skype 8 to be Discorde's little brother. And Discord can be insane to use. On Windows it has a fair amount of unlabeled stuff and focus jumps around a lot, and on IOS, Ugh. At least I can use Skype on my phone and my computer with the same ease. Now I'm not trying to say good riddens to Skype 7. Jayde I fully agree with you about how people can do what they like so long as they cause no harm. But here's where I take issue. Some people seem completely unable to accept that things will change. They don't stop at delay; they fight it to the last breath and don't seem to proactively do something when they are pushed against a wall. That is their right of course to feel however they choose, and I do get where they're coming from, but that approach holds us back. When skype 7 was starting to be phased out for real, several people weren't responding to my messages for days. And when they did, the response was "Sorry I didn't see this because skype 8 sucks." Or, I'd be bombarded with messages about how they needed my help getting Skype 7 working, which I knew nothing about since I had already upgraded, and when I tried to tell them that I'm on 8, they act like I'm on some other planet for putting up with it. This happened to me like 3 times. On a slightly unrelated note, due to Twitter's relatively new API stuff, conversations with third party clients are as slow as can be, and it impedes conversation and that is where I draw my line. When I have simply had enough with Twitter, I will normally say something like "Hey this delay is getting old, do you have Skype? Or what other app do you want to use?" But when people were venting to me about Skype, they would just leave it at that. I always have to ask them "What apps do you like better? Work with me here. I can probably work with you.. I have been asking people about Facebook, and I might try that since I have multiple personal and professional reasons to do so. I have tried Hangouts, Viber, and Whatsapp on my phone, and I use all three occasionally. If I was asked to use the Twitter web interface, I would try. And like I say, I can do discord well enough to get by, and I'm willing to try others. But I sometimes feel like I get little in return for the hours I spend asking about and adapting to the needs of others.Of course, everyone is different, I get it. So I don't take it personally. At the end of the day, I'm just annoyed at the absence of something with a simple interface like Skype 3.8. Anyone remember that?) To my knowledge, it made everyone happy.I sort of see Ironcross's angle of looking at things, to a point. The way I see it, Microsoft will do what they want and discontinue Skype 7 whenever they please, and will focus on Skype 8 and their vision of it, in whatever way they choose. They care about accessibility and fixing bugs for the majority, but their vision comes forward, and that is what they will support the most. You have equal right to support or not to support it. As an example, I don't mind Skype 8 so I use it. I do mind Twitter's API changes so I stopped using that. But that's pretty much the extent of my control. I could, perhaps, try to persuade a big company to change something, but I suspect I would not get far at all.I fully understand why someone would say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Why discontinue Skype 7?" When someone says that to me, I normally like to do research and figure out reasons for the change, because I believe good reasons and solid justification is more worth finding than assumptions and cynical conspiracy theories. But I also know those conspiracy theories will happen no matter what. So to sum up, I can't win, pretty much. Therefore I just go with the flow as much as I can, and accept the good and the bad when I'm ready. Sometimes I have the luxury of choosing when I do things, but sometimes I am forced into things. When you are able to choose, it is no doubt a better experience, but regardless

See, I agree with you in theory, MasterOfDeath. I wasn't the one who began this topic. But when someone comes in and basically spits spite, I'm going to take issue with that, given I was one of the vocal supporters of the fact that Skype 7 was still working. And still is, let's remember that. After the scare, it's still up.You don't get away with essentially laughing at me (or rather, at a group of which I'm a part) and get a free pass just because it's not personally targeted. I'm not in the least trying to claim any straight-up malice here, and I know it's not personal to me at all. But I came in here and said what I did because frankly I have yet to receive a good answer as to why people are actively glad that support of a harmless thing was supposedly discontinued. It's not hurting anyone. It's doing no harm of any kind. The upgrade is not a straight-up, no-doubt-about-it benefit. So why the freaking glee? It just feels needlessly antagonistic, and so I responded to it by challenging those responsible to answer for their actions. Is that wrong?

@52, I don't know what the course says, but here's what I'd say. Skype 8 is a single instance app. So do the following:1. Put Skype 8 as a shortcut on your desktop2. Go to that shortcut propperties3. Assign a keyboard shortcut to itNow, when you receive a call, press that shortcut and it should focus Skype, then press Ctrl + Shift + P to answer the call. Of course you can automate those two shortcuts with another keyboard shortcut, like with auto hotkey. Instead of Ctrl + Shift + P, Ctrl + E should end the call.

Not that much of a surprise, it was announced a while back.MS do what they want, but don't be too cynical, they want it to be accessible: https://blogs.skype.com/news/2018/10/31 … kype-8-0/. Take the time to write to the user voice and contact the accessibility desk, it's the main entry point for accessibility requests. I mean it, do it, a lot of great people read every single one of them. You have no idea on how some people are truely passionate about this. Also, for jaws users, there is a course on Skype 8 which costs 30 pounds that shows how to use Skype 8. It claims interesting stuff / features, my personal highlights:• Reviewing the ten most recent messages with keystrokes or placing them into the JAWS Virtual Viewer. • Accepting an audio call via a global keystroke from any application. • The new Skype screen experience: a guide to the new Skype layout and good orientation points. • Launching, exiting and customising the Skype interface. • Moving directly to, and exploring, the History List.• Changing Skype Contact views. Disclaimer: I didn't buy the course, I don't know about the quality of it. I didn't test the scripts, I guess you get them when you buy the course. I'm hesitant, but if someone tries it, tell me if it's worth it.Reach for the Skype course link: https://www.hartgen.org/skypeRIP Skype 7, we will miss you, I guess :'(

Which means mac users are thoroughly screwed. Narrator and NVDA have been given under the hood enhancements to interact with skype better with some hotkeys even. Voiceover gets didly shit because Apple stopped caring about Voiceover and the mac.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

Some clarifications. When you get a call, you do not have to go through the Skype Window at all. What you do is very simple. Focus skype, either by opening it from the system tray which takes 3 keypresses, and then you should automatically hear your screen reader tell you who's calling you. If that's the case, a simple ctrl shift p will answer it, while ctrl e will end it. If no, just go to your virtual cursor / browse mode and press ctrl home and you will see who is calling you. Not as convenient as alt page up for sure, but not as terrible either. System tray inaccessibility is actually not Skype's fault, it's an Electron bug that will get a fix soon. I do however have to say that I never had the need to use anything from that menu in the System tray. If you want to change your status, for example, in the main Window on the top of the app you can do that.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

So 33, there is a massive difference the win7 vs xp and even the win7 vs win10 argument, and the skype 7 vs skype 8. Win7 is more secure, more  accessible version of windows, and it is superior to xp in functionality. The same can be said for win10. However, skype 8 adds nothing, while braking features which made it so much easier to use. I am not opposed to upgrades, but not when they brake existing functionality or make it more awkward to use. Now we basicly have the crappy electron interface in whatsapp and Slack. I don't want a webpage, I want a real app. If I wanted a webpage, I'd visit a website to get it. The same problem is with the slack app. There isn't very much point in using the app. Simple problem with skype, when you hit applications on tray icon, menu isn't read, so you need to use object nav and mouse clicks to activate an option in the menu.

Okay, Ironcross, thank you for conceding the point. If Microsoft will do what it wants, then your argument of "you didn't take the time to give valuable feedback" is busted. It wouldn't matter if every single person upgraded the very day skype 8 came out, because MS was going to do what it wanted. You are not, in fact, advocating for an upgrade so we can improve the service, because you accept that MS has control over what it does and we do not. You are advocating for an upgrade because you have a personal beef, or so it seems, with blind people who won't abandon outdated tech. And okay, whatever, fine, but don't call it by another name if this is the real issue. And for heaven's sake don't act as if that opinion of yours actually needs to matter to the rest of us. It's just judgy and mean-spirited, really.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

@29, you're wrong on basically all counts. There were global hotkeys which could be set in Skype 7, which made answering calls much easier than it is in Skype 8. It's true that the window pops up, but sometimes NVDA's focus doesn't automatically go there, which forces you to fumble around in the Skype window anyway. I would argue that that's not nearly as efficient as using alt page up, which was the answering shortcut in Skype 7. yes, when the window does automatically gain focus as it's supposed to, it's all well and good, but there's another issue I have with that scenario. If someone else happens to be using your computer, and you receive a call you'd rather not have them know about, having a big flashing neon sign, so to speak, announcing who that caller is will be about the least beneficial thing you can think of. At least in Skype 7, there was a setting where you could hide that information once a call was in progress. I don't remember the name of it now, but I do wish Skype 8 would implement a similar feature. As for ads, it was very easy to disable them, and it wasn't even a hack as such. I'm sure there are still articles floating around on some websites if you want to Google for yourself and see how much of a breeze it really was.

Also, it needs to be said that I am not suggesting we have skype 7 forever, and that in accepting this, we also have /fork forever. That's not really viable either. I am not opposed in theory to MS fixing things and upgrading. That's the nature of tech, especially, but almost everything else as well. Stuff changes. Stuff improves (or purports to improve). We have to deal with it. I can understand that. So pleasure about an upgrade because it's better? Great. Pleasure because strides are being made? Grand. Pleasure because an older version has been forcibly discontinued when continuation was arguably not hurting anyone, when this behaviour feels spiteful? I just don't get that.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

So, again, you're missing the point, Simter. Forks suck. Let's agree on that part first. I agree. They suck. But why did I use skype for almost a decade without ever once even knowing what they were? Maybe it had more to do with silly people doing silly things than with skype 7. Your argument sounds silly, and it is.Take this example."The last two times I've flown on an airplane, a random passenger started throwing peanuts. Now there are no more peanuts and no more airplanes, so that's a good thing. Good riddance."Neither peanuts nor the airplane were at fault. The person throwing was at fault, the same way the person using /fork was at fault for making your skype 7 experience a bad one. And you, too, of course, since if you add random people you don't know and they started forking you, that's partially your decision. That is not the program's fault, it's the user's fault. So yeah. Just think about that.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

I can tell you why we say that it couldn't die soon ennugh @post4. Here is the detailed reason. In skype 7, there was a commant called /fork. That one allowed you to make a copy of a skype group, don't ask me why they implemented it but it was there. And some people had the idea: "hay. Why don't use that to spam people?" This got a trent in the blind comunity, and skype8 no longer has /fork. So it's good that the spammy skype7 is death. Also skype 7 was unaccessible. It was only a pain to answer calls, especially when it needed to go fast. That was because of the fact that if you got a call, you heard the ring but therre was no window opening. It was just showing up in the notifications, you needed to find it, type through a few menus and then you could answer. Isn't that, kinda, to complicated for answering a call? And skype 8 automatically maximices the window when a call is coming and also brings you directly on the answer button. Also skype 7 had adds, what skype8 don't has.Jayde wrote:Mazen, I'm not sure what your deal is here.So there was a topic a couple of weeks ago where Ethin was essentially saying he thought Skype 7 couldn't close soon enough. I labelled it as spiteful, he tried to defend the accusation and got ripped apart (verbally, at least). What makes you think you're any different?I just do not understand people who take actual pleasure when stuff that used to work for other people ceases to do so, or when the prospect is on the table. If you had a favourite restaurant near your home, which happened to sell one of your favourite foods, and I found out that one day, they were going to stop selling that food...well, wouldn't I be a colossal jerk to say something like "Well hey, they couldn't do it soon enough. They were losing money. Too bad, so sad. Go eat pizza or something". This is really about the same, except considerably worse as skype is a communication platform, and whatever our favourite foods are, we can usually find the same thing (and maybe better) elsewhere. So yeah. Just...not getting it, guys. I think the antagonism of skype 7 users, and on the basis of the service itself, should really stop. It's needlessly dramatic, confrontational and childish.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

This is a classic example of moving the goal posts, sir.First you talked about people not upgrading when they should because...well, uh, change? And everyone should just embrace change and get used to it. And when I took that apart and attacked the underpinning of why it's anyone's business but the people themselves, you gleefully skated off in another direction. That's not how good discussion works. You've kind of forgotten a few points though, so metaphorically speaking, let's take your skates away from you.1. The announced change has been essentially looming since the summer. Since that point, many people have no doubt reached out to Microsoft in order to improve the service. One or three more voices is not going to make the difference.2. You actually very neatly hamstring yourself by talking about how Microsoft is going to do whatever it wants on one hand, and then in the very next breath saying that we should upgrade in order to all give them useful feedback. So which is it? Do our opinions matter, and if they do, why are you saying Microsoft is just going to do what it wants? Or do our opinions not actually matter much after all? Because accepting that latter position kind of takes most of the reason for upgrading away, now, doesn't it? After all, why upgrade and give salient feedback if Microsoft is already pretty sure it's going to do whatever it wants?3. Have you ever considered that upgrading only when forced has given people time to do their research with the change coming down the pipe? Some people really do best by just diving right in and figuring stuff out. Others don't. I think it's morally arrogant of you to assume that the former stance is right by default, or should automatically apply to anyone who isn't you. The fact is, Microsoft did not immediately cancel things. They walked it back a bit and gave people time to adjust. People used that time. Now they appear to be forcing an upgrade. people now have to choose between either no longer using the service, or getting used to the new way of doing things. No one has the right to claim they weren't warned. No one can fairly say Microsoft didn't give them ample opportunity to feel out what was going to happen.Well and truly, the only people who really deserve any of this - and then, only a little - are the people who had months to acclimatize, didn't, and are now going to howl about the unfairness of at all. Note how I'm not doing that? A few are, and will, of course, but that's the way of things. I maintain that no one should be "happy" for the forced upgrade. I further maintain that to be so is spiteful, as the lack of forcing was not hurting anyone. If some people wanted to use a system that was essentially deprecated because no one was getting hurt, it's nobody's business but their own.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

This is how it works, Microsoft will do what they want to do regardless of what we say. SO, people can be on board or not, that's their choice. However, in all this time of avoiding Skype 8, they delayed an opportunity to make it better by submitting feedback. Now they're stuck on a platform they say they can't use, or doesn't do this or isn't that or what have you. Now, they have to deal, because most won't, even now, take the opportunity to use the channels they have available to them to tell Microsoft what could stand to be improved. We actually have a company who seems to be listening to accessibility related concerns right now. They built a game controller for people with mobility issues that can accept all sorts of peripherals. They work to constantly improve Narrator, which seems to be coming into its own. They've given us a completely eyes free way of installing Windows 10. Now, I don't agree with everything they have done and are doing, but this is how things are going to be, it isn't going to be different because a small minority of people want it to be. That's like having 50 people digging by hand to try to sculpt the Grand Canyon differently, when it took tens of thousands of years of constant water flow to shape the terrain. The take away from this should be to use the tools you have. You're not going to change the course of the entire Skype division of Microsoft, but you could get the accessibility people in there and get some issues worked out.

Also @17: The problem with finding alternatives is.Microsoft still has a huge market share. Also, Skype is integrated into Outlook (what was Hotmail), and all of MS products and services are tied so closely together. It's no different to Google or Facebook.

@17: No, it goes back a lot further than that. It goes all the way back to Microsoft's IE days pre-W95 when they were forcing IE down everyone's throats. See the US vs Microsoft legal issues for MS for context.e

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

Ironcross, here's the thing there. I'll approach you a little more politely than I have approached others previously, because you're at least predicating your stance on the semblance of a fair objection. You say you're glad it's closed because we "have to confront change". I ask you: what's so great about change for its own sake? If something is clearly better in all ways for all people, and if using something older is actively detrimental, then sure. Okay, fine. Why use an MP3 player from 2004 if you can get something of much higher quality and with more space and more support and better accessibility these days? Why drive an old beat-up 1966 harvester pickup truck when you can get a much better pickup truck that does all the same things, only better? The problem here is that you approach this, as you seem to do in many other instances, as a black and white sort of problem set. Either we're totally embracing the new thing (which to your way of seeing things is only right), or we're living in the past and shooting ourselves in our collective foot. There's no middle ground. There's no room in your philosophy for the idea that the upgrade was a hassle. There's no accommodation for the fact that not all change is good change, even if it does become necessary down the road. What troubles me more, though, is that frankly, this has nothing to do with you. I keep hitting on this. If you do have an old MP3 player and you love that thing, I'm not going to be glad when it bites the dust and you have to change your gear. If your computer is eeveral years out of date but is very good at what it does, fine. Use it. Go nuts, dude. Why is it, exactly, that people have this idea that they should get to determine who does or does not face change? Where does anyone get off saying that they should essentially decide that anyone who doesn't do as they do is somehow deserving of spite? It just blows my mind.Just have a think on that. My use of skype 7, till now, did not hurt anyone, and that includes me. I knew I'd have to change one day. I knew I could when the time came. I knew what would be involved, and knew it was a matter of time. My refusal to let go is not toxic, not to me nor to anyone else. Nobody got hurt, least of all myself. You will note that at no point did I try and entice anyone to change what they were doing.I fully support the right of an individual to choose as they will, providing no harm is done to themselves or to anyone else. Why can't some of the rest of you say the same? No, really. I want an answer to that question which doesn't just boil down to "Well uh you should change, because, uh, er, that's what you gotta do.".

Thats pretty old news though, skype 7 stopped working for me about 2 months ago already.Skype 8 is not as comfortable as Skype 7 though, especially systemwide hotkeys don't seem to exist / work anymore, but its just a matter of adapting to the new interface until most things just work as before.Best Regards.Hijacker

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

I am glad, that I don't have to rely on Skype. With the end of Skype 7, my time with Skype ends as well. It is too bad, that big companies always have to force down their will people's throats. Microsoft is the perfect example. It started with updates in Windows 10, and now continues with Skype. Well, time to look for alternatives then...

Also of noteSkype for Web no longer works on Firefox. Which bugged me, since I like FF. And no, before you aska useragent switch doesn't appear* to solve that one.Cue me going over to Vivaldi.EDIT: Or Safari, for that matter. Or Opera, or anything but Edge (which is moving to a Chromium base) and Chrome/Chromium based browsers.EDIT #2: Oh, and @1: I'm not sad to see Skype 7 go personally. I'm more intriuged what MS will do with Skype 8 myself now if they aren't maintaining 7, really. Personally I feel like the whole killing 7 is long overdue and they should have done that when they started rolling out upgrades to 8. I mean, Web Skype warned you that support for the (now dead) old version was ending soon and to try the preview.

Re: surprise from microsoft: bye skype 7!

Mazen, I'm not sure what your deal is here.So there was a topic a couple of weeks ago where Ethin was essentially saying he thought Skype 7 couldn't close soon enough.
