Sorry for a noob question, but what is an SB+?
I think I've worked out SB3, SBD, SBC, SBR etc, but this one isn't
coming to mind easily!

It's an SB3 modded by a third-party company for better sound quality.

ok. I figured it out myself.
Go back to itunes preferences.
Go to advanced and change the importing setting from aiff to mp3.
Adjust bitrate to suite ipod.

Why compress at all?
a) disk is cheap (1TB disk is ~$300 this can hold on the order of 1600+
CDs, 250GB is nearly free ;-)

Why not compress to a lossless format?

But 250GB/2 is even more free.

Maybe this is a dumb question. What if lossless formats change over
time so that in five or ten years the players are using a different
format? Will it be possible to convert from one lossless format to
another?

Not so dumb, but easy to answer.
WIth any lossless format,

If you go direct out of your Mac G5 into your stereo, don't you get all
of your computer sounds going through your stereo, too?

No, on a Mac you can specify which audio device to use for sound
effects (internal speakers, external device, etc.) or even turn them
off completely...

No difference in sound quality either way. The only benefit to the SB3
is that it has no moving parts and is totally silent, so it works
nicely in a dedicated listening room. And for controlling it from
across the room, the VFD display and remote work well.

You will be missing something in the sound quality if you have a
whirring hard disk in your listening room. I'd say go the Squeezebox!

It is a G5 tower. Do you know until your post I hadnt noticed the fan

Thanks for everyone's help. To answer a few of your questions:
As yet I dont own a Squeezebox.
The Stello doesnt have a volume control so this would be handled by
the amp.
Not that Im quite understanding the disadvantage of this!

Hi,
Im ready to go digital with my music collection.
I already have a G5 Mac which will store the music. What Im not sure
of is which route to go:
Option 1
itunes - Apple lossless G5 optical to DAC (thinking about the Stello
DA220 Mk2). DAC to amp.
Option 2

I hate to say it, but I don't see any audio difference at all.
Now the SB lets you move it away from your computer, but that isn't what
you asked.

And it lets you control it from the sofa, instead of the desk, getting
you away from the computer, too.

Just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing anything re the sound quality.
As thats the most important part to me. I want to improve the sound
quality over my CDP (by using a DAC and lossless files) but as this is
for my office, being close to my computer is not a problem.
But I guess I need to

the chart looks like it has a few peaks closer to 104-106db, to my eyes.
I do hit 104db or higher...then again, I'm not an engineer and I don't
know what peculiarities an analogue pot or switched resistor ladder
might create.
