I'd clarify this by saying that if two packages have conflicting files, pacman will still not allow the installation of both at the same time (without the force flag). The conflicts array is still definitely the right way to go, however. There could be a valid case for installing two packages that provide the same thing if they do not conflict on the filesystem. Another key purpose of the conflicts array is to facilitate switching between the two packages. If A depends on X and Y provides X, then without the conficts array set, switching to Y would require separate actions of removal of X and installation of Y. But the removal of X is (near) impossible because A depends on X. With Y's conflicts array containing X, installing Y will offer to replace X with Y in one shot. Cheers David

Is it just me, or is the field marked "Username or email address" on the AUR login page setting a character limit below the length of my email address? If so, then perhaps this field should be marked for usernames only and not username or email address… Cheers

Okay, good to know it's being worked on. I seem to recall the TU who looked at it mentioning that using separate repositories would use up more disc space but avoid this issue? Thanks
[aur-general] Issues Pushing
Hi all, I discovered this problem back in June with the help of the guys on IRC. The guy who helped me discover the root of the problem went on to discuss with one of the TUs about this problem and the solution for it. IIRC, Lukas was on holiday at the time, so he wasn't pestered with it at the time :) Three to four months later and nothing seems to have changed, so I thought I'd start a paper trail and bring this to the attention of a few more people. I committed changes to an already-established AUR package, and attempted to push these commits. Running `git push` on my slow connection just hangs. 'Impatient me' killed it after 5 minutes of hanging. Trying to push from a faster connection, I found it uploaded almost instantly. Setting GIT_TRACE_PACKET=1 when running `git push` showed up a (warning: large) log [1] showing that git is being sent a bunch of refs (?), presumably for packages which aren't even mine. On a slow connection, this makes updating AUR packages to impossible. It takes a solid 20 minutes for the push to complete for me. I won't maintain AUR packages if this is the way it's going to be. Even though faster connections solve the time problem, it then becomes an issue of the amount of data transferred needlessly. Why is this happening? IIRC, the IRC folk mentioned something about the underlying structure of the git repository at the AUR end, but I don't know enough about this stuff to say either way. Log, xzipped for size reasons. Unpacks to ~82 000 lines. [1] https://ptpb.pw/XmET

Re: [aur-general] AUR4 keywords in PKGBUILD?
I'm aware of that and I hope I didn't imply otherwise. The point I was trying to get at is that .SRCINFOs are summaries of a package's metadata. I understand that keywords are metadata so if they had to be put somewhere, it would make sense to put them in .SRCINFOs. However (assuming we refuse to allow them into a PKGBUILD) this would require another input to the SRCINFO other than the PKGBUILD. Assuming this input took the form of another separate file, it would be unnecessary clutter. I suppose if mksrcinfo left the proposed keyword field alone but updated the rest of the file, it might be a tidier solution…
Re: [aur-general] We've got a spam issue in our AUR
I agree with gt. Not meaning to bike shed further, but if we had a 'not constructive' or 'destructive' flag, and have the comment appear grayed out and flagged for moderation after n flags, this would be a more sane implementation of 'voting' on comments.
Re: [aur-general] We've got a spam issue in our AUR
I should add that I am not yet advocating such a solution. As others have said, the spam problem is not large enough to warrant it.
Re: [aur-general] AUR4 keywords in PKGBUILD?
I wouldn't say having keywords in the .SRCINFO is any better than having it in the PKGBUILD. SRCINFOs contain metadata drawn directly from the PKGBUILD, with the exception of things like the `epoch` field. To have the keywords present in the SRCINFO but not the PKGBUILD would be nonsensical in my opinion.

Re: [aur-general] PKGBUILD Critique
Hi stef, contragulations on writing your first (?) PKGBUILD. There are a few points that need clearing up before your PKGBUILD can be released for use. 2) You can see I have some questions/doubts re. line 26/27 (original PKGBUILD has 26, I changed it to 27, out of habit I guess. I don't think it's an important point though as I guess one should clean up the various dirs left after installing an AUR package, in any event, though. Comments?) You should almost never use `make clean`. It is up to `makepkg` and the user to ensure the build directory is fresh. Also `|| return 1` is not required. Do not use `configure --foo=anything including pkgdir`. It will not do what you expect it to. `./configure` is a script which dictates various aspects of the suite after compilation. Options such as --prefix or --foodir set values which become compiled into the program. Imagine that $pkgdir is `/home/user/blah/pkg`. Setting --prefix=$pkgdir will mean that instead of /{etc,usr,var}/ the program will have /home/user/blah/pkg/{etc,usr,var}/. So when installed using pacman, the package is going to put a bunch of files at /home/user/blah/pkg/, right? That's why you're getting errors involving your home dir. Since the program is going to eventually be installed with pacman to `/` then you need to treat the build as if you're installing it to `/` up until the point that you run make install. This way, all the compiled-in values won't involve /home/blah/. I'm probably really crap at explaining this, but it was worth a shot. I can only suggest you read makefiles and learn what each recipe generally does and what variables it draws on. -- Four word witty remark

[aur-general] Orphan packages, Policy on bots
Hi all, I've been looking at writing a small bot which will crawl over orphaned packages' PKGBUILDs, performing analysis and gathering stats. For example, I'm really keen on making an attempt to clean a bunch of them up. 25% of the 53587 packages in the AUR today are orphans and, like many others, I'd like to see this number decreased. In the past, I have manually gone down the list of orphans, but that's just horrible and slow (also, can't get my browser to do HTTP head requests). So naturally, I started writing a bot. I did start thinking about having the bot comment on packages with dead end sources, but soon realised this would complicate things too much if it were to stop repeating itself each time it is run etc. Being able to pull various lists (for humans, not bots, to act up) out of a magic hat. As a random example, it'd be useful to pull out a list of packages which: * Are orhpans * Have less than five votes * Have dead end sources * Haven't been updated in the last year So we could send a couple of people to, eg, adopt or file appropriate requests. So anyway, I've seen wiki bots doing their thing on our wiki, but what's the policy on AUR bots? -- Four word witty remark

Re: [aur-general] Unsupported architectures in the AUR
The wiki page on PKGBUILDs [1] gives me the strong impression it *has* to be at least i686 and/or x86_64. To quote it: Currently, it [the arch field] should contain i686 and/or x86_64 It goes on to mention that the 'any' pseudo-architecture can be used for platform independent packages. So in theory, if it doesn't contain i686, x86_64 or any, it's not allowed. The key word here is 'contain'. The most common interpretation of this word makes it synonymous with 'include'. This means that you are allowed to have 'arch=(i686 armv5h)' or 'arch=(i686 x86_64 armv5h)' but not solely 'arch=(armv5h)'. ...as I (not unreasonably) interpret it. -- David Phillips GPG Key 0x7BF3D17D0884BF5B Fingerprint 2426 235A 7831 AA2F 56AF 4BC0 7BF3 D17D 0884 BF5B

So assumed there would be a helper that provides the kind of search you need, you won't use it, as a matter of principle and because there are freakish discussions about helpers? If (more or less) all it did was search the AUR, then I would look at using it. Re: [aur-general] Supported Architectures
There isn't really an official stance. It's neither explicitly allowed nor denied. Feel free to add the architecture if the package works on a specific ARM architecture if you want. There is an official stance as dictated on the wiki [1] however I happen to agree with the last part of what you said. Strictly speaking, maintainers shouldn't add anything except i686, x86_64 or any. That said, I don't see why anyone short of being truely anal would request that, say, an armv6h architecture entry be removed from a PKGBUILD if it also already specifies i686 and x86_64. i686-x86_64-any anal-ness belongs in the official repos, the forum and to a large extent, the wiki. Ahh that's right. My memory's not serving me well today. I've created a new package [1], could a TU please merge [2] into [1] for the reasons I mentioned in my first message. [1] https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/trayfreq-archlinux/ [2] https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/trayfreq/ Cheers. You have to upload the pkgbuild with the new name and then ask one of the TUs for a merge request. [aur-general] Quick question about sl
Please excuse me if this isn't the right list for this (I feel confident it is), but is there any reason why is it that something that's as reasonably update- and maintenance-free as http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/sl not in community yet? It's got over three hundred votes; is there a reason for it staying out of community? I can understand the viewpoint of it being such a small package that it's not worth the time and space on mirrors, but still? Wow, I'm proof reading this message just now and it sounds more demanding than intended. Ahh, okay, that makes sense. I thought that would be the case -- these guys 'n' gals are volunteers after all. Re: [aur-general] Code review request: new PKGBUILD omodoro
Related to (4): I've got a PKGBUILD (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/pa/passgen/PKGBUILD) which points to a git repo, but *not* using a git://xyz.git url. Instead, I'm using the format https://github.com/phillid/passgen/archive/master.zip; - should this package have -git appended? I'm thinking it doesn't need the -git suffix because it's pulled over HTTP and doesn't need git... What's the convention on this? Cheers. It would be nice if you guys could do a code review to approve the PKGBUILD i wrote for the AUR. The PKGBUILD is here: http://www.okraits.de/upload/omodoro/PKGBUILD Any feedback/criticism is appreciated! Greetings, Oliver 1. Your pkgver function doesn't work. pkgver should not be random, it should increase with each commit to the repo. 2. Don't have it depend on an old, replaced package (python3). You just want 'python'. 3. Please quote paths that contain a variable like $pkgdir. 4. You should append -git to the pkgname when you're pulling from git master. 5. Why bother to define _gitname if it's the same as pkgname? Since you should be changing pkgname, _gitname can make sense or you can just do ${pkgname%-git} and get the same thing without having to use an extra variable. Those are my suggestions, nothing too serious. -- David Phillips
Re: [aur-general] Code review request: new PKGBUILD omodoro
Right, that makes sense. In that case, I'll just switch it back to using static source tarballs. Thanks for your help. Instead, I'm using the format https://github.com/phillid/passgen/archive/master.zip; - should this package have -git appended? Yes, it should. The -git suffix indicates that the package is built from VCS. master.zip source file *also* comes from VCS, from git repo and means current HEAD of master branch. The main point of VCS package is that the source is moving target and it changes independently from package maintainer. And it differs from 'versioned' package where sources are changed only when maintainer updates PKGBUILD. Using master.zip is a bad idea because: - Once master.zip downloaded it is cached in the local directory. If you run makepkg again nothing will be redownloaded even if upstream repository has changed. - Updating local git repository is more effective as it fetches only the latest changes. Thus package rebuild is faster. So what you want for passgen: - rename it to passgen-git - use git repository for sources=() instead of 'master.zip' - add 'git' to makedepends - add proper pkgver() - use 'SKIP' for sha1sum as project head can change at any moment I'm thinking it doesn't need the -git suffix because it's pulled over HTTP and doesn't need git... What's the convention on this? Cheers.
