After a long time without updates (my apologies for that), I finally got most of the stuff needed done. Nested layouts are now handled correctly, the systray now works a bit better and I think it's quite usable. I threw away my idea of inventing a crazy algorithm for finding free space in a list

I hadn't pulled in while, now I am noticing something weird with the layouts and some programs (gvim for example). Using the default config and the latest awesome (master branch), open up several gvim terminals, they are not resized properly to use up all the available screen space. Cheers,
