Hello Harry,
I found this on the Hawaii Archives website: here is a direct link to the
PDF file, and the next link is to the Hawaii Archives website (general)

The question I am interested in is why is it that the given name Manuel was
usually reserved for the first born son? Does anyone have some ideas? I
realize it became tradition but does anyone have any
thoughts on how it might have started?

… never heard of such a tradition as “rule”. May be in a particular family…

Hi Eliseu,
I should have been more specific with my post and clarified that in my
tree I would estimate 95% of Manuel's are first born sons and I have also
noted that most first born sons in other family trees from Pico are named
Manuel I am not familiar with the general pattern in others
I am trying to figure out the name of the child in the attached record:

Thank you so much. This helps a lot - especially knowing she died of a
disease. I really appreciate it!

I thought that was too easy this morning. I have never seen this name before
but the writing is clear enough it looks like Selinda. If you look at the names
at the bottom the priest signs his name Antonio dos Santos. The S in both names
is the same.

Has anyone come across a situation where a parent of the groom or bride in
a marriage record is not listed as being dead defunto but you know for

Yes, Herb. I have noticed that they are not always consistent with that
info. I assume that in the past, parents are almost always present when the
marriage occurs, or absent (ausente), or deceased (defunto). But I could be

I am sure I have. I think it had a lot to do with the information and the
detail that was put into the records by the priest. I always considered it a
bonus of information when the record said a person was dead. An example might
be that the priest knew that a parent was dead because he
Yes Herb, in the later records of Norte Grande, Sao Jorge, the Priest does
NOT indicate a parent's death at all. Very frustrating when you are trying
to pin down the right couple or when the parent has passed!
