It meant that they had to have permission from their Bishop or superior (in the
case of Jesuits, Franciscans, etc) for a good reason.

And I was my nephew's sponsor 5 or so years ago at his confirmation. So we
can look up these laws all we want and I'm sure for every law, one of us
can find the exception!

I am (and *was)* working in those areas. I'm researching my paternal
grandmother's family. They came from Sao Miguel and the only concelhos that
I have not found a family member in are Lagoa & Ponta Delgada.

Thank you!! You are both correct that the date was 1837; that was my typo. I
did not see the baptism date; it must be just before the word "baptizado" where
it reads "dez [something I could not read] mez ". Thank you so much. Now I
will keep going to find Joao.
