I believe Sam has it all correct. The word is Freguesa (sp?) which
parishioner. It also says she died without sacraments because she drowned
in the ocean.

I just got back from Pico. The picture of the man working has to be in
Lajes. Looks like it might be between Lajes and Ribeiro do Meio, possibly
near the fort. The gardens we saw had potatoes, inhames, bananas, and kale.
