Thanks, Shirl. It was a good thought. It would have worked...if the first
few pages of mine weren't missing. I'll look at other years from the same
city, and see if there's a standard month given.

This is such a helpful and knowledgeable group. Thank you. I actually went
back and found my GG uncle's and his wife's death dates thanks to this tip.
(Still tracing the elusive GGF, though.)

You were so right. It wasn't there for the person I was originally looking
for, but I went back and found the death date for two others. Thank you so
much!

Lilliana, One thing you may
If the City Directory is from the USA, there should be a date at the top of the
actual page. (The image, that is.) At least the Boston directories are that
way and they are taken after the first of the year. One was May, another
June, etc.

Thanks, Marilyn. I know it's a long shot, but would you happen to know the
answer for New Bedford, Massachusetts?

I do not. You might try looking at the beginning of the directory.
Sometimes they state when it was actually done, but many times just a year
is stated. It you are looking online, like Ancestry.com just go to the
beginning of the images which should be the beginning of the book.

a pretty good knowledge of city directories as I did an inventory of city
directories for the Library of Congress, in DC as part of my internship.

Does anyone know at which time of year the information for city directories
(1880s to 1920s) was most likely to have been taken? Before the year
started--so *by* January, 1900 for a 1900 city directory, for example. Or
by the end of the year? Or does it just depend? I have found one ancestor
