Hi Linda and all
Thanks :) Funnily enough I think I saw a passport for a Maria Josepha close
to the depature date but I skimmed over it because I couldn't see Joaquim
(silly silly me). Once the site is back up I'll find it and document it
again.
Once I get my head around Joaquim's immigration
Hi all
I know they were both born the in the Azores. We have, very elderly, living
relatives who confirm this. Anecdotally we also know that Joaquim and
Maria's families were very unhappy about their marriage and so they came to
America very soon thereafter. I have Joaquim ("King" as he's now
Linda,
OK, thanks for explaining how he morphed into Antonio. Yeah, the manifest
on Joaquim is the first thing I looked up because I wanted to see what the
columns said on the right, but since they were U.S. Citizens, they did not
need to say who they were coming to in America. Samantha knows
Oh! I see the problem. I made an error in my note to Samantha in which I
stated that Maria Josefa was married to "Antonio" where I should have said
"Joaquim". Ooops!

Joaquim Benedicto is the husband of Maria Josefa; Antonio is Maria's
father. Joaquim's father is Benedicto Antonio. Who's on first? ;)
I haven't seen the manifest, so I can't speak to that.

Thanks for the links and the way to get to them. I was searching tombo.pt
but in all the wrong places (I am such a noob). I will definitely continue
searching for their passport documents too. :) Can I ask how you found them
so quickly. It really was just minutes from me posting
I haven't followed this thread in its entirety, but how did Joaquim
Benedicto morph into Antonio? The original couple that Samantha posted
about are U.S. Citizens. Or so says the American manifest.

Hi Samantha,
Please keep in mind Roselyn's advice, and please also take care to verify
any information you find in online trees by checking the digital records.
We're so lucky to have these resources, but as you've probably already
guessed, last names aren't exactly fixed. First names are a

Hi Samantha,
I'm glad that you are excited, and that I could help. You're welcome.

Hi Roselyn
Would you mind please also linking the URLs to the documents? I've been

Many thanks

Thank you s much Roselyn. This does indeed look like them.
I'm not familiar with naming conventions in these documents. I'm assuming
that Joaquim's father is Antonio Benedicto yes?
Also, from what I can see women's last names are not generally documented
yes?
Thank you again :)
Samantha
Oh my goodness Roselyn, I'm doing a little happy dance here. Yes, this very
much looks like them :) Thank you thank you thank you :)
I'm not familiar with the naming conventions at the time on the Azores.
"Benedicto Antonio", should I assume that it last name, first name? ie
Antonio Benedicto?
Hi Samantha,
Assuming the couple that Rose found for you from Santa Lucia, Terceira is
correct, you should try looking at the passports from Angra.
Like Cheri suggested, start from the sailing date and go backwards, and
keep in mind that they might not have been married yet when they got their

It generally was a week to a month before sailing that the passporte is

Hi Rosemary :)
Thanks for the reply and apologies for the questions; I'm so new at this.
Are you saying the Joaquim may have had an additional name (surname) which
he then dropped upon arrival in the US? (I'm familiar with the name

Samantha,
You are not ready to start researching in the Azores. You need to do more
work in the U.S. first. It would be similar to someone posting that their
ancestors came from America to England, yet they can't even provide the
state in America.
There's a whole list of how-to on the Azores
Hi all
I'm building my husband's family tree on ancestry.com. His maternal grand
parents arrived in the US from the Azores in 1908. I have the ship name and
passenger list from Ellis Island but I'm struggling to work out how to get
more information about them from the Azores.
Currently I'm
