[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Jose de Araujo of Ponta Garca, Sao Miguel

2011-01-03 Thread JR
Hello Pat and Celeste. No 14 and 15, Joao Moniz Matos and Margarida
Moniz seem hopelessly lost. Have to see what can be done about that!
My suspicion is they either go be different names and/or come from a
nearby village. I have six children for them, only one with a birth
date. Benedita, Bernardina, Josefa, Andre, Joana and Antonio, born Nov
16-1743, PG. Benedita and Bernardina are relatively uncommon, so may
be they can be tracked down.

I am looking through the rest, to see if I can find anything.

Portuguese cultural class series starts Wednesday
http://www.mantecabulletin.com/news/article/19761
Staff reports of the Manteca (Calif.) Bulletin
POSTED Dec. 31, 2010 10:24 p.m.

The Manteca Parks and Recreation Department is again offering a
Portuguese class geared for those of Portuguese descent who want to
learn more about their history, or just anyone interested in knowing
more about the culture other than festas and bullfights.

The nine-week Portuguese Cultural Class will begin on Wednesday, Jan.
5. Classes will be held every Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the
Manteca Senior Center, 295 Cherry Lane, just behind the Police
Department. Registration for the class is at the Manteca Parks and
Recreation Department at 252 Magnolia Avenue in Manteca.

Interested in finding out how different cultures influenced the
Azores, how a rebel tribal leader, Virathus, held off the mighty
Roman Army on the Iberian Peninsula, and why the inhabitants of
Teceira, Azores like their bulls and bullfights so much, and why the
Portuguese have such a devotion to the Holy Spirit?

You can find out those answers and much more by taking the Portuguese
Cultural Class offered from Jan. 5 to March 2.

Participants will learn the history of Portugal going back to pre-
Roman days then to the first monarch, the golden age of discovery, and
understand the reasons behind the immigration move to the USA,
according to Mary Del Pino who is teaching the class.

Traditions, both cultural and religious will be a large focus of the
class, she said. Traditional foods, dance and music will be explored.
Students will learn the “Chamarita” – a folk dance, and will have a
Portuguese potluck where the main course will be provided and everyone
brings their favorite Portuguese dish. The Portuguese language will be
touched on, with some basic greetings and dialects reviewed, as well
as the history of the language.

Those who are studying their family trees can get information on how
to continue their research. They will also learn about prominent
Portuguese-Americans and what the letters FESM and MRPS really stand
for.

The class costs $50 per person for the nine-week session. This
includes all class materials, the cost of the potluck and the
“Chamarita” dance lesson. If you are not a resident of Manteca, the
class will cost

$60, as there is a $10 non-residence fee. No registration will take
place after the second class on Jan. 12.

Course teacher Mary (Gomes) Del Pino is a certificated high school
teacher. She speaks fluent Portuguese and is of Portuguese ancestry,
both on her maternal and paternal sides.

She was the first editor of the “Luso-American,” the in-house
publication for the Luso-American Fraternal Society based in Dublin.
This will be the ninth Portuguese Cultural class that Del Pino has
taught.

Hi Deanna and listers,

I live in Folsom, also, and wish they would have it closer to
Sacramento. If it were a one time thing it would make a trip to
Manteca worthwhile but it goes on for a few weeks and it goes to a
late hour (counting the trip back home). They have this in Manteca
once of twice a year if memory serves me correctly and I believe they
get quite a turnout for it. We did have Portuguese language classes
in downtown Sacramento a couple of years ago but I believe they were
was discontinued also and that was quite a journey on 50 to St.
Elizabeth's in the rainy winter weather at 6 PM. That teacher also
lives in Folsom.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help while you do your research - Victor incentive

2011-01-03 Thread bellemarco
Once again, as I do every year, I am offering a 100 dollar incentive for
anyone who finds my grandmother's baptism record. Her name is Isabelle(a)
Victor and her parents were Antonio Victor and Romana Augusta. She was born
between 1880 and 1885, most likely closer to 1883 somewhere in the Azores.
Also, a 25 dollar incentive each for baptism records of her brother Paulo
b. abt. 1874 and sister Belmira b. abt. 1888. I do not know what island but
I don't think it was Pico, Santa Maria, Corvo or Flores but I could be
wrong. They travelled all over those islands so who knows. If, when you are
doing your own research, and you run across any of these, please let me
know. These are the ONLY names I am researching - I have all of the other
siblings (I think). Also, a 50 dollar incentive if you find the death
record of the mother Romana Augusta who died after between 1885-1892. I
have the father's death record.

Thank you

Once again, as I do every year, I am offering a 100 dollar incentive for anyone
who finds my grandmother's baptism record. Her name is Isabelle(a) Victor and
her parents were Antonio Victor and Romana Augusta. She was born between 1880
and 1885, most likely closer to 1883 somewhere in the Azores. Also, a 25 dollar
incentive each for baptism records of her brother Paulo b. abt. 1874 and sister
Belmira b. abt. 1888. I do not know what island but I don't think it was Pico,
Santa Maria, Corvo or Flores but I could be wrong. They travelled all over
those islands so who knows. If, when you are doing your own research, and you
run across any of these, please let me know. These are the ONLY names I am
researching - I have all of the other siblings (I think). Also, a 50 dollar
incentive if you find the death record of the mother Romana Augusta who died
after between 1885-1892. I have the father's death record.

Thank you

This sounds wonderful, and I also wish that they were closer to Sacramento.
PHCS is still holding Portuguese language classes. We usually have a Spring
and Fall session. The session for this last fall were canceled do to a
conflict that the teacher had. We will be having the classes this year and
they will start in about a month or so. The teacher, Higina, also has a youth
language class in Elk Grove. Here is the link for the Portuguese Historical and
Cultural Society of Sacramento. I will bring this up at the next meeting and
see if we can get something started to offer in this area.

2011-01-03 Thread Altino DeMelo
Being from Canada, i really don't know that area of the states at all,
but i hope there may be people on the forum who may know and be able
to help. I had an uncle who immigrated to Providence approximately
1952, he died shortly after 1955 or 1956.

Is it possible that someone can find out the correct date for me and
if in the area, what may have happened to the spouse and kids.

The information i have is the following:

MEDEIROS, Silvano (immigated approx 1952 d. 1955
PEDRO, Conceição (Wife)

Their Children:
MEDEIROS, José
MEDEIROS, Manuel
MEDEIROS, João
MEDEIROS, Albert
MEDEIROS, Zélia
MEDEIROS, Conceição
MEDEIROS, Gilberta

Any information on whatever happened to this side of my family would
be appreciated.

is a small fee for this service.

2011-01-03 Thread Rosemarie Capodicci
Elaine,

I just had a thought, have you checked the newspapers that are online on the
CCA site? Perhaps there is an ad for them doing the Circus in a specific
town/island that would give you a clue as to where they are at a certain time?
I found a birth for Teotino in Horta (Matriz) listing Antonio and Romana in
1881 with their parent names but no marriage date(Uminho site). So you know
that they were in Faial in 1881.

If you go to the CCA site and click on arquivo digital then scroll to the
bottom and click on the blue addy: http://arquivodigital.uac.pt it will take
you to the screen that has four choices to the right. I can't get the page to
load right now and I can't remember which one to click on to get to the
newspapers (I think it's the 3rd one down!). Just an idea since you haven't a
clue as to where they were performing.

Good luck,

Rosemarie

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] FYI: Manteca Bulletin, Portuguese cultural class series starts Wednesday

2011-01-03 Thread gerakarisp

Regarding the class in Manteca.  I attended the class a couple of years ago.
Mary Del Pino was teaching, however it was through the Senior Citizen Center.
So many people attended, we had to change rooms and younger people wanted to
attend also. At the end of the course, it was decided to offer the course
through the Rec. Center so that all ages could attend.

It was fantastic .  I live in San Ramon and each week would pick up an elderly
cousin in Hayward and the two of us would acquaint ourselves and somnetimes
reacquaint ourselves with Portuguese culture.  Mary is a wonderful teacher;
very committed to her Portuguese heritage and great ability to inspire others.
After attending her class, I made my first trip to Portugal and the Azores.

Would recommend it to any of you who are 1st or 2nd generation Portuguese
Americans.

If you are not a resident of Manteca, the
class will cost

This will be the ninth Portuguese Cultural class that Del Pino has
taught.

2011-01-03 Thread Tish M
I have a photo of Marie and Eugene Santos. Marie is identified as a cousin.
I believe it is a wedding photo.
1930 Census they were living in Rodeo, CA (Contra Costa County)
They had a son Eugene born 1928 or 1929
California death records: Marie died in 1993 in Contra Costa County
Marie's parents were Manuel and Jessie Figueiredo from Centerville
1910 Census Manuel and Jessie with Tony (4 yrs. old), Marie (2 yrs. old)

Do any of these names ring a bell? Manuel and Jessie were from the Azores,
Santa Maria.
