Repost for Luis Miguel Rodrigues Martins, lrazoresgenealog...@sapo.pt

I want to inform all friends of this group that I will be launching
my work "Families of the Furnas Valley (1671-2017)" on next July
19th in Furnas.
There are also presentations of these books in the cities of Ponta
Delgada (July 25), Lisbon (in September) and Fall River, Mass., USA
on November 3, 2019.

There will also be a presentation in Toronto, but still undated.
The price of the eight books will be 130.00 euros, without shipping charge.
Thank you!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Book for beginning genealogists Unpuzzling Your Past

2014-04-01 Thread Cheri Mello
When I first got into genealogy 20+ years ago, I went to my local library
and checked out a few books on genealogy. One book I really liked and I
went to the bookstore and purchased it. That book was Unpuzzling Your
Past by Emily Anne Croom.

Dick Eastman has a link to a book review on it here:
http://goo.gl/SFwOqm

I also signed up for a genealogy class at my local adult school. Many
things that were said in the book were reiterated by the teacher.

I haven't looked at my copy of the book in a long time, but the review
mentions a filing system. I pretty much try to let my genealogy program do
most of that.

The focusing on one ancestor has been said by many genealogy teachers and
lectures. And that works, as long as I'm looking for Percival X.
Housewarmer. If we are looking for Manuel da Silva, that doesn't work out
as well because we need to look for Manuel da Silva with Constancia de
Jesus. So in the Portuguese records, we focus on a couple.

Mrs. Croom mentions cluster genealogy. I'd kinda forgotten that. I
believe most call it whole family or collateral genealogy, where you
collect as many as you can. Even your 2nd cousins, 3 times removed.

For those new to genealogy, I'd recommend checking out this book at your
local library!

Many thanks for the information, George.  I gather from some later postings
that you have not been well lately.  I hope you are doing better.  I should
note that I heard from Joao Ventura who gave me information about the Univ of
Minho work summarizing the church records and have found a great deal of
information from the entries for Cedros and Salao.  The last entry relevant to
my family is a 1712 marriage record in  Cedros for Joao Fialho and Anna
Furtado.  Now if I can just make the jump to Pico for the birth/baptism of
Joao.

By chance, do you a reference to the listing for Salao?  My family transitioned

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Book Marriages of Cedros, Faial, Acores, etc. by L.P. Silva

2013-09-02 Thread João Ventura
Hi Bill,

The Salão database (also by Helder Oliveira) is here:
http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=SALAO;lang=en

And before you start asking for all of the parishes in Faial, here's all
the parishes indexed by that research group in Univ. Minho (ex-NEPS):
http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/genealogias.html

The problem is that with those databases and the online records, it
(almost) spoils the fun of paging through hundreds of years of records.
You'll have to wait a while for the 'Salão' records to be online, though.

Regards,

João

Very good, Joao. I figured out the language issue and have started

family transitioned from Cedros to Salao in the late 1700s. I have my
grandfather's birth certificate but I'm having trouble pinning dow the
birth and marriage of his parents.

 All the best,

 Bill

 Hi Bill,

Sorry for posting the link to the Portuguese version. There was a 'You can
select another displaying language among the following ones' text with lots
of different flags allowing you to change the language at top. But you can
also use the following, which will take you straight to the English version:

 http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=CEDROS;lang=en

Sorry Rosemarie, even though Rich, our contact, at the Plaza Hotel lags behind

they have our block of 25 rooms ready to go!

the evening for guided research. We have so many people that are returning from
previous conferences that we should have lots of help! The more seasoned
researchers always have help to offer the “newbies” so it all works well. We
look forward to seeing you both in April. More info will come out soon. You can
always check Kathy Cardoza’s Azores GenWeb site for updates if you miss it on

[AZORES-Genealogy] Book Marriages of Cedros, Faial, Acores, etc. by L.P. Silva

2013-08-31 Thread fialho
I am looking for information about the book Marriages of Cedros, Faial,
Acores, Parish of Santa Barbara 1628-1891 by Lionel P. Silva. My searches
so far have identified one copy in the research library of the Univ of Mass
but they don't distribute it as a loaner. I live in northern California
and the trip would be a bit much for this old guy. Does anyone know of
other copies that I might access? My father's family lived in the
Salao/Cedros area during the 18th and 19th centuries, maybe even in the
17th. All suggestions would be much appreciated.

Bill That’s wonderful news about you both coming! It will be held at the same
place as before, the Salt Lake Plaza across the alley way from the Family
History Library. Cheri and I and possibly (hopefully!) Joao Ventura from the
Azores will lecture during the day and then we all will be in the Library in
the evening for guided research. We have so many people that are returning from
previous conferences that we should have lots of help! The more seasoned
researchers always have help to offer the “newbies” so it all works well. We
look forward to seeing you both in April. More info will come out soon. You can
always check Kathy Cardoza’s Azores GenWeb site for updates if you miss it on
the list. Are you planning on staying at the Plaza? As soon as Cheri gets the
contracts to sign we can start reserving rooms under “Azorean Genealogy

the dates for us.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Book announcement: South of the Cannons: Portuguese Families of Stonington, Connecticut

2012-03-03 Thread Katharine
South of the Cannons: Portuguese Families of Stonington, Connecticut
by Henrietta Mello Mayer:
http://www.rtp.pt/icmblogs/rtp/comunidades/index.php?k=South-of-the-Cannons--Portuguese-Families-of-Stonington-Connecticut---Henrietta-Mello-Mayer.rtppost=38383

Mello Mayer, Henrietta. South of the Cannons: Portuguese Families of
Stonington, Connecticut. Stonington: Stonington Historical Society.
2012.

This book is a compilation of information on the Portuguese community
of Stonington, Connecticut, USA. The book combines genealogy,
chronicle, and public records.

South of the Cannons: Portuguese Families of Stonington, Connecticut
compiled by Henrietta Mello Mayer South of the Cannons is a rich
chronicle of Stonington in a time that vanished only yesterday. “South
of the Cannons,” the area from Cannon Square to the Point in
Stonington Borough, was for decades the focus of the town’s vital
Portuguese life.

Henrietta Mello Mayer's work captures the flow of that busy time while
it still lives in memory. The book is a greatly expanded edition of
her 1977 work, Silva Descendants: Portuguese Genealogy. It contains
fresh genealogical material, a chronology of Portuguese life in
Stonington, previously unpublished family and census records, research
on the compiler’s Azorean ancestors, and many previously unpublished
photographs.

Henrietta Mello Mayer South is a genealogist.

Portuguese Heritage Publications of California printed 6200 of these books
and are now sold out. It is a beautiful book, with many pictures from the
various Holy Ghost Festas in California. It goes into the history of the
Festas up and down the state. I purchased this book even before I realized
that there were pictures of me and also of my goddaughter in it. Right
now, they are preparing a book on the Portuguese churches of California.
The date keeps getting pushed back, and it looks like it might be out toward
the later part of 2011.

The description read:  In the first half of the ninetenth century whaling
was one of the young American nation's most important industries, providing

Good morning everyone,

If anyone is interested in a copy of Rodrigo Rodrigues book Genealogias das
ilhas de S Miguel e Santa Maria, there is a rare book store in Lisbon that has
at least 1 copy. I purchased mine there last year. It is expensive, but has a
lot of information back to 1400 and 1500's. Not every family, but about 400
different ones. Price is $ 100.00 plus $ 25.00 shipping from Lisbon.

If you email him with a couple of names, he can tell you if they are in the
book. This is volume one. The rest have not been published yet. His info is:

Judi,

They HAVE published all the volumes now. The set is 6 volumes and it was
around $300-$400 for the set, but I don't remember if that was in euros or
not. PRE-ordering info here:
http://www.dislivro.pt/subscricoes_livros/smiguel.pdf I don't have any
info on where to currently order it.

It covers only Sao Miguel and Santa Maria island. It also seems you have to
go pretty far back in your research to start to utilize this series.

Many lines come down to around W.W. I. The price in Euros is quite hefty
especially when you add in the cost of shipping. However, it saves you
countless
hours of research, and thousands of dollars if you were to pay a genealogist to
do the research for you.

John,

Just so we don't mislead the readers

Many lines come down to W.W. I (World War I) Many lines, but not
all. Not using the series that much, would you say that Many includes the
majority of lines in this series or just selected lines?

Which reminds me...Would you say that this series covers ALL the families of
Sao Miguel and Santa Maria or the descendants of the more prominent lines?
I don't think it covers all, as many of my branches are missing.

Dear Cheri:

I think that unlike Carlos Machado, Rodrigo Rodrigues, who lived well into
half of the 20th century, brought his lines down much closer to his own time.
There are many that come down to world war one and many more that come down to
the last quarter of the 19th century. Also unlike most genealogists before him,
Rodrigo Rodrigues was interested in everybody from the highest lord to the
lowest peasant, and he loved examples of people who were landless and of no
social importance but shared ancestry with the high nobility. The 6 volumes do
not
cover every family, but they do trace 434 different principal families, most
of them from S. Miguel and the rest from Santa Maria. Almost everybody with
roots in either island has to connect to some if not many of these families. I
too have dead ends who do not connect to any of the 434 trunks in Rodrigo
Rodrigues, but I connect to many, many of them.

I hope this helps.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Book: Prince Hentry the Navigator, A Life

2009-03-21 Thread Cheri Mello
I received this from someone who researches Madeira. Although there aren't
many Madeira researchers on this list, the few may find this interesting and
the history buffs may be interested as well.

I have a library of books (over 50) that deal with Portuguese history,
literature and culture. One of them is a recent publication of Yale Press
written by Peter Russell who is director of Portuguese Studies at Oxford,
entitled Prince Henry the Navigator, A Life. You can find it in soft
cover at Amazon. It's 400 pages long and I'm at page 95 so I can't comment
about how good a read it will be, but...I'm learning a lot about Madeira
right now that might be of interest to people in your group who can trace
their heritage to that island. For example, many of the original settlers
there in the 15th century came specifically from lands owned or under the
control of Henry, around Viseu, north central and eastern Portugal. Also,
anyone who has a surname derived from Tristao Vaz Texeira might benefit from
knowing he died in 1470, leaving four sons and eight daughters behind. The
book is full of such details and the index has 25 pages containing an
extensive list of sources, at least 300. In my experience, it's not that
often you get that many historical documents in one book.
