Re: [BackupPC-users] HELP - FW: BackupPC administrative attention needed

2022-03-24 Thread George King

Hi Edward

The other respondents have explained the open-source aspects of using
backuppc but with respect to your question - the email message indicates
you have run out of disk space so either need to enlarge the RAID array
(or increase file system space in some other way) and/or adjust the
backup regime to keep fewer backups (by editing the backup Schedule
settings).  Backuppc pools files to be efficient in it's use of disk
space but more backups will increase disk usage.  However be careful
about reducing the backup frequency, number of backups and max ages etc
as it will affect existing backups and data could well be lost.  There
is advice in the backuppc documentation about choosing the right backup
schedule for your purposes.

Hi Edward,

I'm not sure how much help this list can be as we are just a group of
people who administrate our own installations of BackupPC. It's a
very flexible solution that can handle massive amounts of backup and
runs maintenance-free for years, so it's not a surprise if it got
forgotten about until the disk filled up.

Most of the folks on this list installed the software ourselves. The
"PC Backup Genie" is just a cutesy name attributed to the process
that sent the email. Can you reach out to the individual responsible
for the installation of the system?  If it's not possible to contact
the person in charge of the BackupPC build, the best clue to find the
filled disk is to identify the originating server of any alerts such
as the one below to lead you to the source.

As the Senior IT Admin you're familiar with the spoofability of the
"FROM" address on an email. There's no guarantee that it came from
the "remote05" server, but check that first as a simple first step.
If that server isn't running BackupPC then contact your email
administrator to ask for a mail trace to determine which server sent it.

Hello and welcome. A BackupPC system is necessarily and unfortunately
a little complex, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it given time.
It's not exactly a 'product', it's more a sort of adventure.

Given other things in your mail I'm not sure I understand you - do you

Well short of deleting old backups, if the filesystem that you've told
BackupPC to use is very nearly full then there's little that it can do
to help you. Either delete some junk from the system, or failing that
make the filesystem bigger. You might simply need to buy and install
a bigger storage device, and copy the data from the old device to the
new one, or add a device to a RAID array, or ... this kind of thing is
probably the job of the Senior IT Admin. :)

Some familiarity with Linux or other Unix-like system is more or less
a prerequisite for working with BackupPC. Look at the 'man' pages for
the 'mount' and 'df' commands to see how to find the storage space
used and available, and the 'cd' and 'ls' commands will let you romp
around the filesystems investigating their contents. According to
your log snippets the filesystem in use by BackupPC is 97% full, so it
seems likely that you're already in dangerous territory and need to do
something about it quickly. When the filesystem does not have enough
storage space available, it might not be just BackupPC which fails as
a reasult.

I'd cheerfully log in remotely and take a look at your system with no
obligation, and you'd be crazy to let me do that. Be *careful* what
you do when you're logged in as the 'root' user.

Hi Edward,

One place that you might start is the administrator console for your BackupPC
server installation.  Depending upon the version of BackupPC that you are
running, it is generally found at one of the following default URLs:

./BackupPC_Admin

or
./backuppc

Of course, you will need administrator login credentials to see the status
page, host summary and to graphically edit the configuration.

Online documentation and screen shots of the administrator console can be found
here:

https://backuppc.github.io/backuppc/

Generally, as long as you have physical storage available, it's not too
difficult to extend the filesystem (caveat: my only experience is with CentOS
and EXT4) to immediately alleviate this error.
