Is there a setting or something where I can have the default sort

[Bacula-users] monitoring bacula daemons

I'm setting up the monitor 'hobbit' to check that the bacula
daemons are up and accepting connections. What 'hello' message
can I use that will not cause an error to be sent from the
director? I'v used 'Hello hobbit calling' and 'Hello *UserAgent*
calling'... both cause error messages.

[Bacula-users] TSM-style perpetual-full?

I like bacula and what it does for me (thank you development team).
One issue I have is not really bacula, the issue is the long time
required to write backups to tape. Is there anything in bacula like
TSM's perpetual full where I can see the most current files from the
client in the 'restore' command, files removed the client are kept
for a specific number of days, and only the files that have changed
during the night are written to backup tape ad infinitium?

The big difference I can see is the perpetual full. Bacula will upgrade
a backup level to Full if no other Full is found for the client. TSM
will backup any files you tell it to regardless of backup level, and
TSM will keep the file for a certain amount of time (30 days, etc) after
the file is deleted from the client. TSM also knows what the most current
files for a client are, so like 'restore' in bacula you can choose which
files to load back to the client. You do not have to select a file by
job id. You can ask for a list of 'active' and 'inactive' versions of a
given file or wild card and like bacula's 'restore' you can choose which
files to load back.

The biggest difference for what I'm wanting between bacula and TSM is
the 'perpetual full'. Just backup the files from the client and let me
choose which files by date to restore (bacula does the latter).

I greatly agreed with the idea of Full/Differential/Incremental backups
(levels 0/1/2 from BSD) until I started with TSM. The TSM method, once
you understand what it is doing, works very well. I was very skeptical
at first of TSM until I had used it a while. The idea is similar to CVS
or RCS. Only the files that have been modified get new version numbers.

Does that make sense or am I rambling?

The perpetual backup, maybe that's only how I think of what TSM does, backups
up a file from the client to the server and keeps a TSM admin defined (even
per client defined) number of versions of that file before the oldest version
falls off the back. If the file is deleted on the client, the TSM server
keeps at a minimum the last, most current version of the deleted file for X
number of days before that file falls out of the TSM server. The first time
a client is backed up, all the files defined for that server are backed up.
Each time after unless the admin or some schedule specifies, only changed
files are copied. There is no need for a Full. Though some sites do a
periodic or monthly full, you can setup the TSM server for incremental forever.
My issue right now is that my tape drive is so slow that I want only the
incrementals and not the fulls.

 on client, 2) Compare file identity to file table on catalog 3) HEY, I have
 this file already ! Let's make a list of volumes necessary, and ask the user
 to supply us the required volumes, 4) Spool the reused files (as if they
 were d/l) 5) Voila !
 
 It looks to me this is the base backup level, but until more of this
 feature shows up on the docs...

Just occurred to me, if I change the primary schedule so that Fulls are
pulled quarterly or every six months (bi-annually?) then I am closer to the
perpetual incremental. I understand a failing tape and am looking at external
drives that I can use for sending off-site instead of nine DLT-8000 tapes.
The external drives I'm looking at are around $200 USD each.

Changing bacula so that it tracks files instead of jobs I bet is a major
paradigm shift inside the code and not to be started lightly. I think the
per-job approach might be better for small sites (lesser amounts backed up)
and the per-file approach might be better for larger sites (lots of files
or data backed up). I have modified my setup so that I am using disk based
volumes for my nightly backups, then after all the primary nightly jobs finish
I have a single job that grabs all recently modified disk-based-volumes and
writes them to tape. The real epiphany to my setup was realizing I could
use bacula to manage the final disk-to-tape job instead of writing my
own script.

TSM does all the file checking before hand and on windows (and on AIX, but
last time I used TSM it didn't work well there) you have the option have 
having a client-local journal file of backed up files. The local client
gets the backup specification, generates a list of files, compares that list
of files to the journal file, and only sends over the network the files
that have truely changed. Without the local journal file the client and
server must discuss each file to see if the client needs to send the
file to the server.

[Bacula-users] changing the name of a tape?

Hi,

I mis-named a disk volume (if that matters) when adding it just now. I had
a backup waiting for a new volume, so this volume was grabbed immediately
by bacula to start storing the backup (not a problem). Is there a way to
rename the volume? I named it '$site-03578' instead if '$site-0358'. I
want to take the '7' out of the name. Can I just update the database or
must I remove the volume and re-add it manually?

  that the volume name is also in the tape label in the beginning of the tape.
  
  You need to re-label the tape, or bacula will not accept it when it needs 
  it according to the database.
 
 As far as I know, disk volumes are selected by their file name only. I 
 might be wrong, of course... but Mike will tell us soon, right? ;-)

I took the simple way out, waited for the backup job to finish with
that volume and move to the next, purged and deleted that volume and
subsequent volumes, rescheduled the job I just destroyed, and am waiting
to recreate the disk volumes. The only irritating part is the loss of
time. I'm in the middle of doing my monthly fulls, so no big deal really.

I thought there might be a simple way to fix my mistake.

Morning,

I have been running bacula for quite some time (wonderful system). I'm
tweaking my backups to reduce just how much stuff is backed up and
eliminate those things that can be reinstalled rather than restored if
needed. Today I'm looking at a series of files that are copied from an
internal source code repositiory. Since the source code repository is
backed up nightly, I don't want to backup up an individual's copies of
those files (the individuals are by company policy required to manage
any files checked out that have changes that are not yet checked back
in to the source code repository).

In my bacula-dir.conf I have a line: WildDir =
/opt/data/*/p4 In last night's backup I have the
following file that was backed up: (query, 12, $jobid)
/opt/data/user/p4/user_shared/product/dist_sdk/PluginSDK/src/plugins/CaeXML/x64/Debug/runtimeWrite.obj

My understanding, that I must have wrong, is that since the
bacula-dir.conf this section of the File Set has Exclude = yes that
/opt/data/*/p4 is excluded that also implies that anything under
/opt/data/*/p4 is also excluded. I do have a statement further down
in the File Set section of 'File = /opt/data' so that everything else
is included.

Is there a conflict in what I have done?  Is there a better way to
exclude part and include the rest?

  My understanding, that I must have wrong, is that since the
  bacula-dir.conf this section of the File Set has Exclude = yes that
  /opt/data/*/p4 is excluded that also implies that anything under
  /opt/data/*/p4 is also excluded. I do have a statement further down
  in the File Set section of 'File = /opt/data' so that everything else
  is included.
  
  Is there a conflict in what I have done?  Is there a better way to
  exclude part and include the rest?
 
 Your approach should work, but the description of your fileset was too vague
 for me to tell why it doesn't.
 
 I recommend that you post the complete fileset definition to the list.

I have a Run Before Job script named pre-tape-backup.sh that does a find
for everything that was touched during the night's backup. My first
job in the night runs a script named pre-backup.sh that does a 'touch

so I feed those files to my last backup job for writing to tape.

This morning I have been asked if there is a way to put a password on
bconsole, such that a password is required to 'login' to bconsole before
performing a restore, etc. Is a password enabling option for bconsole
already there or do I need to hack the source (if management decides a
password is needed)?

My bacula setup is pulling the remote files to on disk volumes that
are 5GB each. I have a final job that looks for what disk volumes have
changed from the previous backup and writes those volumes to tape.

I could use rsync(1) to copy the 5GB volumes to another server and did
consider copying those disk volumes over the net to a remote location. I
decided against this approach as the rsync(1) would consume my entire
bandwidth. Not a bad solution for incrementals, but not good for fulls.

Happily to help on the list. I've received quite a bit of help myself.

My bacula is installed in /opt/bacula. Add the above query to
/opt/bacula/etc/query.sql (I save system files before I edit them). I
don't think you need to restart bacula after adding the query. Enter
bconsole and type 'query' and the new number of this query. I think the
'# 20' is just for documentation and the query will get renumbered when
bconsole displays the list of queries.

There are two things I did wrong. I couldn't find my saved copy of
winbacula so I downloaded a copy from the net. I need to use the same
vesion as my bacula server. The second is looking at the properties for
the service and seeing where the bacula-fd.conf file is read from. My
setup has that file in the directory C:\Program Files\Bacula directory
and not in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bacula.

I just noticed one of my clients had a huge incremental (level 2)
backup. I want to see what file caused the huge increase. I tried 'list
files jobid=20097' and though I'm shown the files, I'm not shown the
size of each file. Is there a command or query that shows me the size
of the file?

[Bacula-users] Windows 7 client recommendations?

Morning,

I'm trying to backup a user's Windows 7 workstation. Microsoft has
switched to the C:/Users directory and left a system, hidden C:/Documents
and Settings for legacy applications that points to C:/Users. When I
backup this box bacula-fd gets into a loop looking for files C:/Documents
and Settings/Default/Local Settings/Application Data/Application Data/...

Is there some way to detect that the box is a win7 box, or some way to
limit these loops, or should I just create a different file specification
for the win7 boxes that excludes the C:/Documents and Settings directory?

Hi,

I have a server crash and am working on the restore. I have one specific
section of the original file system I'm attempting to restore. This is
section is about 40GB. Luckily I had a recent full before the crash. When
I enter 'restore' and give the jobid bconsole beings to create the
synthetic file system so I can select what I want restored. My problem
is this step of creating the synthetic file system takes a massivly
long time. I've started and killed the restore several times. One time
I waited nearly two days for the synthetic file system to be created.

Is there a way on the command line I can simply say something like
restore client=server-fd file=/opt/perforce/depot/depot/application
recurse=yes?

The server that runs the bacula server has plenty of disk space and 1GB
of memory. After this experience I would like to increase the memory
and to run bacula on a processor better than the Celeron.

[Bacula-users] restore taking a long time....

Hi,

I'm trying to verify what files are backed up from a specific server. In
bconsole I have issued restore and the client name. The process that
builds the synthetic filesystem is taking a massive amount of time. The
several times I've tried to test/verify this restore I've killed the
synthetic file system generation because it takes so long. I've never
seen it finish for this server.

What can be done to speed up this restore?

[Bacula-users] client not backing up?

I'm setting up a client. I copied the bacula-fd.conf from another
working machine and restarted the client. I can run an estimate
job=client-backup listing and the results are fine. When I execute run
yes job=client-backup and the backup fails. I don't see an error. The
only error I find in the output is:

John,

I removed the C:\client-fd.conf.

After I copied C:\Program Files\Bacula\bacula-dir.conf from the working
client to the new client I did change the name inside the file. After
changing the name I restarted the client with sc stop bacula-fd then
sc start bacula-fd.

I verified the password with the director.

I created C:\Program Files\Bacula\working.

What next?

The estimate command works, but not the run command. I have errors in that 
client's log about VSS issues. I added a Enable VSS = no to my windows file 
definitions. Now the backup runs.

[Bacula-users] File definitions, includes and excludes?

Hi,

I want to exclude programs installed on a Windows client in C:\Program
Files.  One program does not play well in that it stores it's data in
it's own directory.  In the File Set definition I have excluded all under
C:\Program Files.  I want to force the inclusion of this program.
I added a File = C:\Program File\SageFAS after the above exclusion.
The SageFAS directory does not appear to be backed up.

How can I re-include the SageFAS directory?

I finally have bacula set up for more testing. I'm trying to build a static FD 
for other servers (GNU/Linux).
I'm using the line:

./configure --with-mysql --with-systemd --with-dump-email=bacula@localhost 
--with-job-email=bacula@localhost --enable-client-only --enable-static-fd 
--without-ssl --disable-libtool

You are missing the packages that contain the libraries for static linking. For 
instance, on my Fedora system, "dnf whatprovides */libssl.a" shows that I would 
need the "openssl-static" package. You would need to do the equivalent for your 
distro and install the packages that provide those static libraries.

What if you turn off MySQL support explicitly with --without-mysql?

(The theory behind that suggestion being that just as two databases specified 
for a director is one too many, so is one database specified for a file daemon.)

What if you turn off MySQL support explicitly with --without-mysql?

(The theory behind that suggestion being that just as two databases specified 
for a director is one too many, so is one database specified for a file daemon.)

[Bacula-users] Testing VirtualFull; job created but not running; why?

I have my test setup of Bacula. I have two servers configured.
Now I'm trying to test VirtualFull of one of those servers (that has Full, 
Incremental, etc.).
I modified the director configuration file and created another Pool for the 
VirtualFull.
The second Pool is listed as NextPool for my primary Pool (and the primary pool 
is receiving backups).
I created a special job for testing the VirtualFull (so I don't have to type 
mod each time).
The job gets created with a status of 'C' and just sits there.
There are no messages.

What could be wrong? Why is my job not starting?

Hi Bill,

In the pools definition I have "#Maximum Volume Jobs = 1" and in bacula-sd.conf 
I have "Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 20". I also have "Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 
20" in bacula-dir.conf. What else do I need to check? I know you presented a 
list of files below, but I'm confused about this. I have autochangers commented 
out.

Hi Mike,

Consider that when a Virtual Full is run, it needs one device to read from and 
one device to write to.

Notice the "is waiting on max Storage jobs"  messages?   It is probable that
you have not added a "MaximumConcurrentJobs" (MCJ) setting to your Director's 
Storage{} resource, or in the bacula-sd.conf file's Main Storage{} resource 
where the SD is defined.

It is possible that you are trying to use a DIR Storage resource that points to 
a single device in the SD... You will want to set up an Autochanger with more 
than one device in it.

Also, if you do not explicitly set an MCJ, it defaults to (1) for just about 
every resource you can think of:

- DIR
- SD
- FD
- Job
- Dir Storage resource
- SD Storage/Autochanger resource
- SD Devices


Hope this helps you track this down.

It might help if you can get a backtrace with debug info in the executable and 
libs.

Can you run from the build directory rather than the install directory?  You

am not convinced that it will build without libtool, so you might try removing 
the --with-libtool=no.  Though it should not make any difference, I would not 
use --without-smartalloc because we only build with smartalloc turned on.

[Bacula-users] what's this command?

In bconsole there was a command where I could see a list of upcoming jobs (like 
a list of the jobs that should be started tonight). The closest I've been able 
to find is five jobs output form the command "status dir". Am I remembering 
wrong that this command was there (a few years ago)? I want to see all my jobs 
that will start tonight, their priorities, etc.

from source, fd only, non-static. I’m using gcc rather than xlC. Here’s what I

I have to do a kill -9 to get my console back. This is happening when starting

If gdb is hanging then you could try dbx (not sure if that can decode gcc's 
debug info though).

[Bacula-users] fileset utility?

Is there a program that will read File Set stanzas and get a listing of the 
files on a client and print what is included and excluded before backing up so 
that tweaking of the file set can happen?

Take a look at the "estimate" command in the Bacula bconsole program. When used
