Re: [Bacula-users] Paper on Property Backup Migration to Bacula

2014-11-28 Thread Fahrer, Julian
Hi,

2014-11-28 14:09 GMT+01:00 Heitor Faria hei...@bacula.com.br:

 Mr. Bacula Users,

 I wanted to write a paper / guide that outlines the process of migrating
 backup data written with property software for Bacula. I think those are
 some premises:

 1. I know this will probably involve restore the legacy data to a given
 mount point in the respective servers and backup it again? Maybe with
 suffix manipulation?

I guess I would try to restore the data to some server . Whether the data
is restored to the original server or not does not bother me. I would
prefer preserving the directory structure insetead. And I would restore to
the same operating system type if possible.

2. And how about changing today job backup date to the real date of the
 first backup of the legacy data? Anyone has done queries that could share?

Using separate jobs with a naming convention that includes the original
backup date might also work. You could also run those jobs to different
pools with appropriate retention periods.

 3. Whatever you suggest.

Kind regards

Julian

Hi Floarian,

2014-09-15 10:38 GMT+02:00 Florian florian.spl...@web.de:

 Hello, everyone.

 I am doing final tests with my bacula setup and ran into some weird
 behavior.

 I set up an autochanger storage and am currently using the same device
 for backup and restore.

 I did a backup of the entire partition E:/ and browsed the files.
 Everything was there.
 Then I tried to restore the files to test-folder (avoiding overwrite).
 Bacula created the new Folder E:/Restore/ and the BAT told me the
 restore was compelted successfully after about 10 minutes.
 I opened the folder and it was empty though. Strangely enough, the
 emount of disk space in use on the harddrive increased.

 So far I don't have the slightest idea, what the problem may be... When
 I first tested bacula on a virtual machine, only backing up 2 small
 files, it worked perfectly fine.

 Florian S.

When restoring an entire drive under windows, the created top folder will

Re: [Bacula-users] Other than Bacula

2014-05-26 Thread Fahrer, Julian
Hi Rickinfl,

it sound like you are using filestorage - is that correct?
If so, you probably forgot to setup Pool Options to Limit the Volume
Usage (see: http://www.bacula
.org/5.2.x-manuals/en/main/main/Basic_Volume_Management.html)
This way you end up with one file per pool on that grows till you run out
of space - no recycling or retention is happening that way.

Bacula has a great mailing list - and a far as I know there are forums
basedon the mailing list. For paid support you can check out
baculasystem: http://www.baculasystems.com/

Don't be setup up. Bacula might be more complicated to configure than other
products (at least the open source version). But it is incredibly flexible
and robust.

 Is there any other good software than Bacula? I've just totally had it

 the others do the exact same thing after the hard drive fills.

 I just don't get it. I've run many different backup softwares (Microsoft)

 Hello,

 I have three pools defined for a host with differing retention times:

 Pool {
 Name = myhost.example.com-full
 Pool Type = Backup
 Maximum Volume Jobs = 1
 Recycle = yes
 AutoPrune = yes
 Volume Retention = 6 months
 LabelFormat = myhost.example.com-full-
 }

 Pool {
 Name = myhost.example.com-diff
 Pool Type = Backup
 Maximum Volume Jobs = 1
 Recycle = yes
 AutoPrune = yes
 Volume Retention = 4 weeks
 LabelFormat = myhost.example.com-diff-
 }

 Pool {
 Name = myhost.example.com-inc
 Pool Type = Backup
 Maximum Volume Jobs = 1
 Recycle = yes
 AutoPrune = yes
 Volume Retention = 8 days
 LabelFormat = myhost.example.com-inc-
 }

 declared in the Schedule so:

 Schedule {
 Name = myhost.example.com-monthly
 Run = Level=Full Pool=myhost.example.com-full 1st sun at 23:05
 Run = Level=Differential Pool=myhost.example.com-diff 2nd-5th sun at
 23:05
 Run = Level=Incremental Pool=myhost.example.com-inc mon-sat at 23:05 }

 This works fine unless a job get upgraded from incremental or diff to
 full. When a job gets upgraded, Bacula uses the pool the job was
 upgraded from instead of the pool the job was upgraded to. That is, when
 a job gets upgraded from inc to full, the inc pool is used. This causes
 the full jobs to be purged at the inc retention interval, which uses
 quite a bit more network traffic and disk space than I had planned for.
 How can I make Bacula use the full pool when a job gets upgraded?

 Thanks,

 Michael Anderson

Hi Michael,

this behavior is expected. But you can specify

  Full Backup Pool = [poolname]
  Incremental Backup Pool = [poolname]
  Differential Backup Pool = [poolname]

in the job resources to solve your problem.

Kind regards

Julian

   DriveIndex = 0
   Autochanger = yes;
   DeviceType = File
   MediaType = File
   ArchiveDevice = /var/lib/bacula/vchanger/c1/0/drive0
   RemovableMedia = no;

 vchanger conf {
 changer_name = c1
 slots_per_magazine = 10
 virtual_drives = 2
 magazine_bays = 2
 magazine = /mnt/vchanger/bay1
 magazine = /mnt/vchanger/bay2

 initmag 1 and 2 is fine.

 Loading the magazines works ok.
 0 - /mnt/vchanger/bay1
 1 - /mnt/vchanger/bay2

 label barcodes on autochanger device(0) looks like it creates barcodes
 for bay0 and bay1.

 Hence when I try to label barcodes on device(1), it says the labels have
 already been created.

 Is this the correct functionality?

Yes this is correct. You have one changer with 2 drives that access the same
volumes.

Kind regards

Julian

 Thanks

 Good to know.

 Does this mean when I want to restore in the future, I will need to make

 Or will bacula let me know which magazine I need and I will mount the

You only need to mount the magazine(s) with the volumes required for the restore

  The web server and backup server are two different dedicated machines,
 hence the backup system is off-site.
  The script needs to run before the backup job obviously, but only on

  Here is my script:

 RunsWhen = Before
 RunsOnFailure = yes
 RunsOnClient = yes
 RunsOnSuccess = yes

  Now my question is.. should my script(backupmysql.sh) be located on
 the backup system only, the client only, or both? I'm not sure if bacula
 takes the script locally and ports it over to the client or if it
 searches fo the script on the client itself. I hope you understand what
 I'm talking about. Appreciate the help.

 It can be where ever you can run mysqldump.

 I suggest it should be on the same machine as the MySQL server. i.e.
 the client

 Also: I suggest not deleting the dumped file after the backup. I
 suggest leaving it there, in case you need it. Faster than doing a
 restore.

 I also suggest copying that file, and all your bacula *.conf files to
 another location, or two, or three. I do that on a daily basis.

 FailJobOnError = No

 Hi folks,

 what's the black magic involved in getting bacula to enable readline
 support when compiling from source on CentOS6? I have all the relevant dev

 configure run.

 I've tried --with-readline, --with-readline=/usr, --with-readline=/usr/lib
 and many more variations, but to no avail. conio gets picked up fine,
 readline doesn't.

I could not get readline enabled on centos too. Meanwhile I gave up and stick

  Any crappy computer made in the last 5 years should be able to saturate
 a gigabit link using iperf. The fact that you are only getting
 26Mbytes/second fd-sd is a bit worrying... it's well above the
 1Mbit/second that bacula appears to be limited to but it's still an
 indication of a major problem. I haven't had that much experience with
 Hyper-V for performance testing but it should be able to approach Xen
 which easily gets gigabit speeds for Windows VMs. Is your switch up to the

 Well, we re-installed the windows servers without hyper-V or any other
 role : no change in transfer rate.

 A Windows 7 laptop running bacula-fd 5.2.9 transfers at 35MBytes/sec ...

 So it seems to be linked to the fact that the server is a W 2008 R2 server
 ...

 Am I the only one having this problem, anybody succeeded in backup-up a
 W2008 R2 server with Bacula at correct transfer speeds ?

Hi Paul,

I'm backing up a lot of 2008 R2 Servers without speed issues. I've seen cases
where a faulty nic driver caused such problems. Have you monitored the network
interface and watched what happens (with wireshark for example)?
I did not follow this thread - so this might have been suggested: Compression
on the fileset may cause slow transfer rates

Kind regards

  Hi Julian

 I'm happy other user's succeeded in backup of W2008 R2 servers ... Could
 you give me the versions you are using on the Windows client and on the
 Linux director ?

 Thanks

 Kind regards

 Paul

Hmm, I'm running various Version. I just checked two installations and I'm
running 5.2.6 (client and director) and 5.2.10 (client and director) on there.
I never had any performance issues like that - with no version I used so far.

Kind regards

Julian

You could also use multiple ClientRunBefore statements in the config file.

 I have several large file systems (1TB) where I want to break them up
 to get smaller backup streams in parallel to increase the throughput to
 tape. My fileset directive is below. I want everything in /home, but
 divided by the regular expressions provided in the Options section.
 Will this do what I want or will I only get one backup stream?

This will not do what you want. You need to specify separate filesets and jobs
and specify a suitable maximum concurrent jobs on the daemons configs.

 FileSet {
   Name = homedirs2 Set
   Include {
 Options {
   signature = MD5
   RegexDir = ^/home/[0-9]*
   RegexDir = ^/home/[a-e]*
   RegexDir = ^/home/[f-j]*
   RegexDir = ^/home/[k-o]*
   RegexDir = ^/home/[p-t]*
   RegexDir = ^/home/[u-z]*
   RegexDir = ^/home/[A-Z]*
 }
 File = /home
   }
 #
   Exclude {
 File = /proc
 File = /tmp
 File = /.journal
 File = /.fsck
 File = lost+found

 }

 I think i configure the rdx drive in bacula as external hdd like you

You could also use vchanger: http://wiki.bacula.org/doku.php?id=removable_disk
This allows you to change the rdx-media as if they were tape magazines.

  Just a short question: what would be frequent incremental backups
  as you mentioned at 1) ?

 I'd regard any interval between 1 hour and 24 hours as sensible for their
 respective setups; this largely depends on the ammount of mails and users
 your Zarafa installation handles, and the system load that you can spare
 for backup purposes.

 If your system can handle an incremental backup every hour, that might
 well be the best choice. The size of the backups will be comparably small,
 as will be the risk of losing data. Due to its nature, Zarafa's brick-
 level backup will not have too much overhead for multiple small
 incrementals versus a single large one.

Just FYI: A few weeks ago we had a problem with a Server running Zarafa. The
only usable backup was a full and lots of incremental. The Zarafa support told
me, that it is not recommended to have more than X incremental after a full. I
can't remember the exact number, but i am sure it was less than 10. So having
running an incremental every hour might not be the best thing to do. Though our
restore with more than 100 incremental backups worked just fine.

Re: [Bacula-users] FD behind NAT

2012-02-07 Thread Fahrer, Julian
As you already said, you could use a site-to-site vpn. I don't know your
network, but if a non-openvpn site-to-site vpn would works, I guess you could
also use one openvpn instance on both sides to establish a site-to-site
connection.

Or you could nat multiple ports to multiple clients. For example: your offical
IP is 123.123.123.123. your internal clients have the IPs 192.168.0.1,
192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3, 192.168.0.4. You then could nat
123.123.123.123:9111 to 192.168.0.1,
123.123.123.123:9112 to 192.168.0.2,
123.123.123.123:9113 to 192.168.0.3,
123.123.123.123:9114 to 192.168.0.4
...

Personally I would definitely recommend a site-to-site vpn!

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered.

I have a client (FD) behind NAT and I am look for ways to initiate backup jobs
from the server without port forwarding on the client side.

I have read numerous articles of how to resolve issues with the server (DIR/SD)
being behind NAT but to me this is easy. I have even looked over the Dealing
with Firewalls section of the manual. In order for bacula to work Dir must be
able to contact FD to tell it to start the backup. Port forwarding is not an
option as we have numerous clients, Linux and Windows, behind NAT and we cannot
assign an external IP to each internal FD. To me this means I have to have a
site-to-site VPN tunnel or clients each running OpenVPN for example.

I am hoping somone can point me towards something I missed.

What I have to do make it work?

I do this with a vss script that creates and exposes a snapshot of the drives
that the exchange stores Its data on, but as the DB's are small at about 30gig
I always do fulls every day. After the backup, it releases the exposed drive

This flushes the transaction logs and is perfectly valid backup, I verify the

I understand and I'm in the same way. All new vm's are deployed in iSCSI
volume on QNAP nas.

Next item to my wishlist is config a physical bacula with volumes in a
QNAP. My question is, by NFS or iSCSI? Some partners told me to do in
NFS, but I think that in iSCSI is the best way...

What do you think?

Thanks,

Hi,

Hi,

What's the best way to set up bacula with a Qnap SAN ? By NFS or iSCSI?

Thanks

 I used a qnap as low-performance storage for bacula (on a VM) and
others VMs, but I have connected the qnap to
ESXi host as an iSCSI storage, end then created the virtual disks over
the new datastore.

Re: [Bacula-users] vchanger on a NAS

2011-03-06 Thread Fahrer, Julian
Hi,

actually vchanger just expects the storage to be mounted to the same path every
time you change disks (magazins) - so actually this should just work. Just
point to /volumeUSB1/usbshare in your vchanger config.

Betreff: [Bacula-users] vchanger on a NAS

Hello,

I would like to run Bacula on my Synology NAS to take backups on
external SATA disks,
using an additional USB dock.

I see that there is a vchanger tool available to manage the operation
of replacing disk volumes,
but the requirements of the tool are not easy to meet with what the NAS offers.

As I read from the vchanger howto document, two components are required:
- udev with a /dev/disk/by-uuid structure
- autofs daemon

The NAS in question doesn't have udev, it doesn't keep a by-uuid
structure for the disks,
and it doesn't have autofs daemon.
But, it runs hotplug, and as soon as a new disk is inserted, it is
recognized as /dev/sdq and
automatically mounted as /volumeUSB1/usbshare (always).
Also, using an additional tool (blkid) it is possible to query the
uuid of the filesystems present.

Do you think it would be possible to make vchanger work with what's available?
If so, can you please suggest what to put in its configuration file?

Thanks

[Bacula-users] search file edited on a specific date

2010-11-29 Thread Fahrer, Julian
Hey list,

I could not find an answer to this in the archive. Can I (or Bacula)
list files from a specific job edited on a certain date?

For Example: List all .xls files from jobid XXX where the date of the
file is 2010-11-26 (not the date the backup ran!).
I guess I have to parse the lstat field.

I'm running Bacula 5.03 on Ubuntu 10/04 x64

 I'm sorry, your question is unclear. When you say make jobs not wait
 for previous to end, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean that only
 one job is running at a time?

Sorry for that.

Real example:
1) 4 jobs start in one time with priority 10 - all them work at once
concurent - all ok.
2) Then start jobs with priority 11 and it is take long time to end.
3) In the middle of that job started another job with priority 10 and
this job is wait previous to end.

And this is a problem. This jobs have separate pools in separate storage

 Files are backed up from a zfs snapshot which is created just before the
 backup starts. Every other file I am attempting to restore works just
 fine...

 Is anyone out there doing ZFS snapshots for VMware, or backing up NFS
 servers that have .vmdk files on it?

 No, but I could imagine that this might have something to do with
 some sparse-file setting.

 Have you checked how much space of your 8GB flat vmdk is aktually being
 used? Maybe this was 445841408 Bytes at backup time?

 Does the same happen if you do not use pre-allocated vmdk-disks?
 (Which is better anyway most of the times if you use NFS instead of vmfs)

All I use is preallocated disks especially on NFS.. I don't think I can
actually use sparse disks on NFS.

As a test, I created a 100Gb file from /dev/zero, and tried backing that up and
restoring it, and I get this:

29-Dec 13:45 krikkit-sd JobId 1446: Error: block.c:1010 Read error on fd=4 at

file /scratch/rpool/vm2/.zfs/snapshot/backup/100GbTest not correct. Original
66365161472, restored 376340827.

So, this tells me that whatever's going on, it's not Vmware that's causing me
the troubles.. I'm wondering if I'm running into problems with ZFS snapshot
backups, or just something with large files and Bacula?

 correct. Original 8589934592, restored 445841408.

 As a test, I created a 100Gb file from /dev/zero, and tried backing that up
 and restoring it, and I get this:

 29-Dec 13:45 krikkit-sd JobId 1446: Error: block.c:1010 Read error on fd=4 at
 file:blk 13:0 on device TL2000-1 (/dev/rmt/0n). ERR=I/O error.

 29-Dec 13:46 filer2-fd JobId 1446: Error: attribs.c:423 File size of restored
 file /scratch/rpool/vm2/.zfs/snapshot/backup/100GbTest not correct. Original
 66365161472, restored 376340827.

 So, this tells me that whatever's going on, it's not Vmware that's causing me
 the troubles.. I'm wondering if I'm running into problems with ZFS snapshot
 backups, or just something with large files and Bacula?

Hey,

yes it seems tob e the same problem.
The sql statement in the sub db_find_last_jobid is:
SELECT JobId FROM Job WHERE Type='B' AND JobStatus IN ('T','W') AND
Name='%s' ORDER BY StartTime DESC LIMIT 1, Name);

I think changing it to something like

SELECT JobId FROM Job WHERE Type='B' AND JobStatus IN ('T','W') AND
Name='%s' ORDER BY StartTime DESC, JobId DESC LIMIT 1, Name);

would fix the problem for me right now. But I am not sure what problems would
occure then...

Thanks for submitting my mail to the devil list

This looks to me like the same problem that I was complaining about in the
thread starting here:

http://www.mail-archive.com/bacula-de...@lists.sourceforge.net/msg05013.html

Basically, bacula fuzzily selects things based on date, rather than specific
JobIds. :(
I've just sent a new message to the bacula-devel list, which includes your
message above.

What would be ok, since the idea behind the verify job is to verify the last
job...
Running a verify before the virtualfull would check the original job.

I just compiled it with the sql statement below. The verify just selected the
right jobid...

Hello,

How I can test the communication between bacula-director and fd and sd ?
This without doing a backup or a restore, just connect and disconnect.

I've searched on internet for test communication site:bacula.org
without success.

Hey,

for simplicity I would suggest mounting a share over nfs (or whatever) and
configure the sd to backup to disk using the path where the share is mounted.
Works well for me on several installations.

 Yes.

Oh John!!! Come on! Admittedly did make me chuckle! I think the question Craig

How to I configure my NAS as a device for Bacula-SD to use :)

Which, coincidentally, is the question I was going to ask!

Re: [Bacula-users] Compiling 3.0.2 on OpenSolaris

2009-09-12 Thread Fahrer, Julian
I would suggest running in debug mode (-d).
The Init script changes to the correct user. So run the init script with pfexec.
You should also check for the right permissions on the logfiles. Maybe it is a
problem with connecting to the database.

I have MySQL installed and used a configure script like so:
CFLAGS=-g ./configure \
  --prefix=/opt/bacula \
  --sbindir=/opt/bacula/bin \
  --sysconfdir=/opt/bacula/bin \
  --with-mysql=/usr/mysql/5.1 \

  --with-subsys-dir=/opt/bacula/bin/working \
  --with-working-dir=/opt/bacula/working \
  --disable-build-dird \
  --enable-build-stored

I didn't see any issue during the configure or while running make install.
The binaries were built but when I try to run bacula-sd nothing happens,
not even an error. One thing I am not sure about is who to run it under in
OpenSolaris, but inside a pfexec bash, if I run it in the foreground it still
doesn't do anything?

Any pointers?
Thanks!

The user community should make an effort to offer pre-compiled fd's and sd's
for various OSes. I was in the same dilemma.

Did you just manually compile the whole thing?

Re: [Bacula-users] Using the VirtualFull level with disk backups

2009-08-30 Thread Fahrer, Julian
Hey,

Afaik one storage device can't open 2 volumes from the same pool. So u can use
the same device, but u need different pools for your normal and virtualfull
backups.
You need that for a working virtulfull anyway. Have a look at how copy and
migrate jobs work. A lot of stuff is explained in that part of the manual. Hope
this helps u.

Betreff: [Bacula-users] Using the VirtualFull level with disk backups

Hello.

I'm a little bit confused by the new virtual backup feature in Bacula
3.0.2. I want to do weekly differential backups and monthly
VirtualFull jobs so that I never (rarely) need to do real full backups
which take a lot of time.

The problem is that it is impossible to use the same device and pool
for the source and destination of virtual backups. This seems to be
because the device (even if it is just a directory on disk) can't open
2 volumes at once, resulting in a deadlock.

The only solution that comes to mind is using 2 different devices with
the same media type and using the same pool. I ran this with

run job=test-backup level=VirtualFull storage=test2-storage yes

where the normal storage (specified in the pool) is test-storage.
Both use a different device. The configs for this are at the end of
the mail. This also deadlocks wating for the storage daemon.

Using two different pools works for the first backup but then I have a
full backup in one pool and the differential backups in another pool.
Now the next VirtualFull job must read from both pools and write to
one of them which will again result in a deadlock.

The documentation[1] was not helpful here because it uses two
different pools (one on the disk and one on tape). Google and
searching the list also yielded no answers.

So how do I use this new feature?

Thanks in advance,
Tobias

Dear All,

I have a requirement to backup files on the client first to the server
using rsync like capabilities (store files in flat structure instead
bacula format spesific).

Here is the scenario :

client(s) -- rsync -- Alfresco Drop Zone (there will be rule to
automatically re-organize the files here) -- query files 6 month
old -- backup to tape

I need bacula, especially to agent to manage 'rsync' centrally. Can
bacula configured so that it backup files in a flat structure instead
bacula data format ?

Thanks!

Thanks Petar for the answer,

Using the schedule you give, here is what will i do, please give a
feedback if my solution is good enough or not :

On the server, I will create script to detect whenever a client
computer online, the script will update the Schedule section,
especially the daily backup,and restart the bacula daemon on the
server, when the process backup for that client complete, this client
will be marked. So the same client would not be backup twice a day.

Is this good enough ? Or you have a better suggestion ?

Re: [Bacula-users] Job vs volume retention periods

2009-06-24 Thread Fahrer, Julian
Hi Erik,

volumes will only be reused after the volume retention period is reached.
And the point of keeping a volume which doesn't contain jobIDs is that you
could import the tape or recover data from it using btape since it still
contains all files.

Kind regards

Julian

Hi,

I'm confused in regards to job retention vs volume retention. From the little
bit I understand, if the volume retention period is passed and bacula is unable
to find any other appendable volumes in the client's stoarge pool, it will
delete all file and job records and then re-use that volume. However, how
about if all the jobs in that volume have been pruned but the volume retention
period hasn't passed yet (and of course recycling is enabled) Will bacula still
re-use the volume since no more jobs remained after they've all been pruned?
If it does, what's the purpose of having a volume retention period which is
usually without a doubt longer than the job retention period? If it doesn't,
what's the point of keeping a volume which doesn't contain jobIDs which can't
be restored anymore?

thanks in advance,

Erik

I know this sounds a little odd but can I exclude directories from the
client config?

The reason is that I've got control over the client but my hosting
company has control over the director.
The more things I can control myself, the less chance of something going
wrong.

 Yep.
 But how can I point volumes that have last info ? Not every one in the
 pool.

I have a Run Before Job script named pre-tape-backup.sh that does a find
for everything that was touched during the night's backup. My first
job in the night runs a script named pre-backup.sh that does a 'touch
$file'. I know that any file modified after that touched file is new,
so I feed those files to my last backup job for writing to tape.

 Well, all I wanted to point out was that the error message you are
 getting is caused by MySQL choking on the subquery in the statement...

 I am not really familiar with the SQL Bacula uses, but yes, if you were
 using MySQL 4.0 without problems, then I'd say that none of the stuff in
 2.4.4 contains subqueries as you would get similar error messages
 otherwise. I cannot vouch for 3.0, as other things might have been
 rewritten.

 I strongly suggest upgrading MySQL anyway, as 4.0 is *really* ancient...

 andrea

I do have a newer version of MySQL (5.1.30) available on another host
and I can confirm that everything works as expected using the newer version.

unfortunately this adds a layer of complexity to using bacula on solaris
that i'm not looking forward to. Does anyone know if using bacula
compiled against mysql 4.0 is going to cause any issues when connecting
to a database running version 5.0 or newer?

Hi list,

I have been testing bacula for a couple of days now but I am having some
problems grasping the volume management part of it.

What I would like to achieve is a configuration where every client has
its own pool with its own volumes. Furthermore, I would like to keep 21
volumes (one per day) for each client and automagically reuse (recycle)
those volumes at the end of the 3 week retention period.

I have come up with this so far :

Pool {
   Name = test01
   Pool Type = Backup
   AutoPrune = yes
   LabelFormat = $Client-
   Maximum Volume Jobs = 1
   Maximum Volumes = 21
   Volume Use Duration = 23h
   Recycle = yes
   Recycle Oldest Volume = yes
}

Client {
   Name = test01
   Address = x.x.x.x
   FDPort = 9102
   Catalog = MyCatalog
   Password = xx
   File Retention = 21d
   Job Retention = 21d
   AutoPrune = yes
}

But I can't quite figure out if that's going to do what I want ...

Would anybody care to comment ?

Hi guys,

I just prepared a config for a customer.
Here is the situation:
*1 LTO2 device, 2 local raid 5 devices as storage
*I want create a full backup for every client + incremental through the
rest of the week. Both, incremental and full backups go to the disk
storage, but to different pools
*I want to create a virtual full backups offsite storage to tape. This
happens once a week, always for a multiple jobs.

There is not enough disk storage to keep multiple full backups. So the
vbackup to tape is pretty important.

I specified the Next Pool Directive on the Full and Incremental Pools
like this:

Pool {
  Name = backup01_Pool_Full
  Pool Type = Backup
  Next Pool = LTO2_Pool
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 6 Days
  Storage = backup01_FileStorage_data1
  Maximum Volume Jobs = 1
  Label Format = backup01_
}

Pool {
  Name = backup01_Pool_Inc
  Pool Type = Backup
  Next Pool = LTO2_Pool
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 6 Days
  Storage = backup01_FileStorage_data1
  Maximum Volume Jobs = 1
  Label Format = backup01_
}

Pool {
  Name = LTO2_Pool
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 4 weeks
  Storage = backup01_LTO2
  Maximum Volume Jobs = 5
  Recycle Current Volume = yes
}

Job {
  Name = backup01_Basic
  JobDefs = DefaultJob
  Client = backup01
  FileSet = Unix_Basic
  Schedule = backup01_Backup
  Pool = backup01_Pool_Full
  Full Backup Pool = backup01_Pool_Full
  Incremental Backup Pool = backup01_Pool_Inc
}

Schedule {
   Name = backup01_Backup
   Run = Level=Full sat at 21:00
   Run = Level=Incremental mon-fri at 21:00
   Run = Level=VirtualFull sat at 02:00
}

Is this Correct? Will the incrementals be included into the vbackup?

And how could I implement an VolumeToCatalog verify for the Tape backup?
I think I have to create a verify job for every backup job and schedule
it with a higher priority a short time after the VirtualFull. Or am I
wrong?

If you need more information, let me know. I can also send you the whole
config, but it's pretty long with over 900 lines.

Kind Regards

Julian

in an incremental run by the date of the file.

I have a bunch of files on a file server that have dates in the future like
3/28/2025. These are mostly image files downloaded from a digital camera that
probably had the date set incorrectly.

I noticed that these files are included in every incremental backup, even
though they
have not changed since the last full backup.

The director/storage is bacula 2.4.4 on a fedora 7. The server is centOS 5.2.

 Hello,
 I have a Solaris server running bacula-dir  bacula-sd.
 I'm having trouble backing up data from a windows NAS
 share.
 I can't install the bacula agent into the NAS, and this
 NAS supports only SMB/CIFS (no NFS).
 So I mapped a network drive T from a win2003 server on
 the NAS share
 (this win2003 server already runs bacula agent to backup
 its local E:\ drive).
 Then I changed the Solaris director configuration's
 FileSet to backup T:\ after E:\.
 Bacula complains that access is denied on T:\

 From the win2003 point of view, if I go into Computer and
 open the T drive, I can do anything.
 I thought it was some kind of permissions problem, so I
 checked the bacula-fd service and changed
 the running user from System to Administrator.
 Nothing changed.

 What may be the problem?
 Thanx a lot,
 Gabriele.

System and Administrator are machine local accounts, they do not have access to
network. It might work, if you start bacula-fd as your own domain account (or
other network capable account).

You could also install Samba into your Solaris, and mount the NAS there.

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula on Solaris 10 or SXCE

2009-03-08 Thread Fahrer, Julian
Hi,

you're right, you need to have the same install dir on every machine. I would
suggest putting every thing into one dir:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/bacula --with-fd-user=root --with-fd-group=root
--enable-client-only
Change /usr/local/bacula to wherever you want to install and copy the whole dir
to the remote machines.

If there are still problems on the remote machines, either set the runtime
linking environment (crle) or give enable-static a try.

Kind Regards

Julian,

Sadly, I have been bitten by the static/dynamically linked technicality. What I
want to do is compile bacula-fd on a test machine and copy the binary over to
the production machine and run it. Problem is, the fd compiles and runs fine on
the test machine but does not on the production machine.

I suspect it can be one of two things:

a. I have to compile the fd as statically linked, with the --enable-static-fd
option.

b. I have to have the same install directory on both machines.

Hi,

I have watched a few threads go by about compiling Bacula on Solaris,

to run and be stable. So..
Does Bacula compile? Does Bacula run reliably once compiled?

Maybe you just need to set your environment to the correct parameters.

Set yout path to:

/usr/local/bin /usr/sfw/bin /usr/bin /sbin /usr/sbin /bin /usr/dt/bin
/usr/ccs/bin /usr/ucb /usr/openwin/bin /etc

runtime linking environment:

crle -c /var/ld/ld.config -l /usr/local/lib:/usr/sfw/lib:/usr/lib:/lib

compile:

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/bacula
--with-scriptdir=/usr/local/bacula/scripts --sysconfdir=/etc/bacula
--localstatedir=/var/bacula \

--with-working-dir=/var/bacula/working --with-fd-user=root --with-fd-group=root
--enable-client-only

make  make install

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula strategy question

2009-01-31 Thread Fahrer, Julian
You could use different pools for full and incremental Backups. So an
incremental backup won't overwrite a full one.
Or you could set Maximum Volume Jobs = 7 instead of Use Volume Once. So you
will always have your full backup and the incrementals in one volume. You also
have to adjust Maximum Volumes and Volume Retention.
But your incrementals will still be worthless when overwriting a full backup. I
guess that's just the way it works.

Betreff: [Bacula-users] Bacula strategy question

Hello everybody,

I have a question about bacula strategy.
Currently I'm making backups on local partition (sata hard drives in
raid5 configuration). I store 2 FULL backups every week and on all other
days I make Incremental backups.
I keep max 15 volumes.
Below are parts from my configuration:

Schedule {
  Name = DailyCycle
  Run = Incremental mon at 0:00
  Run = Incremental tue at 0:00
  Run = Incremental wed at 0:00
  Run = Incremental thu at 0:00
  Run = Incremental fri at 0:00
  Run = Incremental sat at 0:00
  Run = Full sun at 1:00
}

Client {
  Name = name-fd
  Address = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
  FDPort = 9102
  Catalog = MyCatalog
  Password =
  File Retention = 15 days
  Job Retention = 15 days
  AutoPrune = yes
  Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 30
}

Pool {
  Name = PNAME
  Use Volume Once = yes
  Pool Type = Backup
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 15d
  Volume Use Duration = 14d
  Maximum Volumes = 15
  Recycle = yes
  Purge Oldest Volume = yes
  Recycle Oldest Volume = yes
  LabelFormat = VNAME
}

The problem is when there are 15 volumes and new backup needs to be done
(situation when one of full backups is the oldest volume). Then bacula
takes the oldest one and on that place creats new backup. But the
oldest is a full backup so all incremental backups done after the FULL
are then useless.

Maybe my backup strategy is wrong. Has anyone any suggestion what to do
with that problem?

I'll be thankful.

Best regards,
Konrad

Actually, you may be right. I was assuming that we were talking about
