At minimum you would need to power the client via barrel jack I'd think.
But there should not be any reason why this wouldn't work. After all it
works on a PC running Debian wheezy, or Lubuntu 14.04. I've tested both
of these personally.

The bbb sgfx is one reason why I've found the minnowboard is so
appealing. While we (my company) are using the bbb, and its a great
board, if we needed something in a higher performance range and could
float the cost we've been eyeing the minnowboard due to its fully open
graphics stack.

USB Host port. I finally got the bits I needed for standalone -- HDMI
cable, USB hub, power supply, etc.

While current is important, so it the rise time of the power supply. Try
getting one with higher current rating to see if the rise time is faster.

I'm trying to do some SPI programming on BBB using SPIDEV1 and based on
examples and it works, but not satisfactory ...
The length of CS is about 1.4ms no matter what is the clock (SCK) speed.
I transfer 2 bytes and the transfer start almost immediately after CS goes
