I've recently got a BBB and I am starting to play with it. Since I am used
more to the bare-metal and low level work with microcontrollers, the first
thing I am trying to figure out the JTAG interface to the board (probably I
won't need it, but still..). Assuming that I have the JTAG

it, to remove the pre-installed debian. Can I boot from micro SD card (with
recovery installed), and then flash a custom image?

No, I don¹t believe it will. GDB or DDD require GDBServer running on the
BBB or you can use an JTAG emulator from Ronetix (PEEDI) or Abatron
(BDI2000) which emulates GDBServer.

Oh, I find it much less convenient to have another machine to deal with.
Parallels integration with OS X is pretty good, although Linux breaks that with
its very non-conforming cut paste. Usually I just ssh into my VM from the OS
X Terminal and deal with stuff that way, rarely using a GUI in

I just tested with two micro sdcards, that are not very used, i bought them
a few months ago, and three micro sd readers ( one builtin, 2 usb). All
three of them resulted in the same error. Depending on the device used, i
was /dev/sdb or /dev/mmcblk0.
dd'ing the image to the card worked just fine
