Perhaps Bird Studies Canada hasn't taken a political position on the dove hunt
because, in the absence of facts to the contrary, they believe in tolerance and
open-mindedness towards the endeavours of others, knowing full well that
birders wish for that same respect.
I read the
The Snowy Egret reported yesterday just performed a stunning 6:50am return
flight into its hunting area in the water by Grist Mill Road, within 15 meters
of several appreciative birders!
Following the prior directions, the bird is south from County Road 9 on Grist
Mill Road to the water a the

75m from road. It is windy and alternating from no rain to pouring!

3 Eastern Bluebirds were seen and heard 200m south of the corner of Front Road
and Emerald 40 Ft Road. This is in the northeast quadrant of the island. They
were picking at the gravel of the roadway and sitting on the powerlines.

1:20pm - Hawk Owl spotted hunting from several tree tops in marshland east of
Opeongo Road just north of the narrow bridge.
Opeongo Road is near km48 of HWY 60 in Algonquin Prov Park, about 3hrs north of
Toronto.

1:10pm - While searching for the Hawk Owl on Opeongo Road, I was surprised by a
juvenile Golden Eagle flying south through the tunnel of trees over the road,
250m south of the store towards the sharp corner at the base of the lake. It
continued lazily flying low, south through the valley.

At around 10am, there was a single Tundra Swan preening on a rock 20ft from
shore directly off Thickson's Point proper.
It was smaller billed and bodied than the Trumpeters, and only slightly bigger
than the CAGOs. Nearby Mutes were larger. It had a very small yellow spot on

While heading west on the 401, just west of Cornwall, my daughter and I
observed a Black Vulture take off from a perch in the area between Avonmore Rd.
and Moullinette Rd. This was at 6:50pm July 14th.
Obviously, the bird showed the classic dark secondaries and light primaries,
instead of our
The Western Grebe was still present, along with a Common Loon, in the mouth of
the Oshawa harbour channel at 2:10pm.
The harbour is at the south end of Simcoe St., and the channel is only 30m east
of the parking lot.

The Second Marsh/McLaughlin Bay area is very active right now. Besides a large
selection of waterfowl, we found 5 Purple Martins among the Tree and Barn
Swallows. It is unknown at this time if any juv Martins were within the
swirling hoard.

A cloud of approx 125 Bohemian Waxwings decended upon the bushes in my backyard
and feasted on berries. The flock spooked three times, first re-landing in the
bushes, and then leaving in a north-easterly direction. They returned 2 minutes
Feb 14 2012, 1600hrs.
Perched in big trees as well as shorter spruce near bridge. NE corner of
interchange HWY 401 and Harmony Rd., Oshawa.
Sighting and photographs of dark Red-tailed Hawk which has been in the area
noted above since at least Dec 29, 2011.

Whitby Harbour
Directions: From the Brock St. exit of the 401 continue south 2km to the
parking lot.
WITNESSED:
At the Brock St. bridge 0.5km north of the harbour, an older gentleman and his
young grand-daughter feeding Mallards and several Trumpeter swans near the
1630 Hrs, Bowmanville ONT
A flock of 300 or more of some type of mixed waterfowl (etc?) passed over my
vehicle at HWYs 2 and 115. Many light underwings were flashing in the setting
sun. They were NOT Canada Geese, nor, I think, Snow Geese.
I could not ID, but the birds seemed confused and

On Dec 29 my daughter photographed a Western dark morph Red-tailed Hawk on the
eastern border of Oshawa at the 401, hunting the grassy ditches.
We have been keeping an eye out for the bird to reappear.
At 3:15pm today I observed a dark bird perched above some grass in

A small crowd of persistent observers had a chance to watch the resident SNOWY
OWL breakfast on an already-captured duck on the south breakwall that juts into
Lake Ontario. The wind was calm but the temp was -9C and the patchy cloud cover
made getting good light for photos a

There is a nice collection of about 20 male and female Long-tailed Ducks in the
south end of the Whitby Harbour.
Also 5 Common Goldeneyes and a multitude of mixed Mergansers.
At Whitby, go south about 2km from the 401 on Brock Street to the parking lot
by the water.
