[Ontbirds] Reesor Pond, Markham - Snow & Cackling Geese & 1000s of waterfowl - Oct 20 dusk
Ontbirders, Took some time to drop into Reesor Pond around 6pm tonight and stayed for about 30 minutes. If you can get there at that time I highly recommend it as it was quite a spectacle watching the Canada Geese and Mallards coming in to land. I estimated 3000 of each species when I left with more still coming in. At one point I looked up because of the sound of wings (around 6:20) and there were a massive number of birds in the air coming in to land. There were 8 Snow Geese at the far side and I found 1 Cackling Goose though there could have been more in the masses. Also here were several Black Duck, Shoveler, a few Pintail (females and 1 moulting male), 1 each of Lesser & Greater Scaup, 2 Ruddy Duck, a few Redhead, Ring-necked, Am Wigeon and 3 Am Coot. Wouldn't be surprised if there's a Greater White-fronted around. Also, as I was driving to the pond, along the 407, I had 3 Cackling Geese in flight with some Canadas, followed closely by 8 Trumpeter Swans. Good birding all, Frank Pinilla Richmond Hill Directions: Reesor Pond is on the north side of Hwy 407 and can be accessed just east of Donald Cousens Parkway. [Ontbirds] Reesor Pond - Markham
Today we were at one of our favourite local birding spots, Reesor Pond, on Reesor Road south of Highway 7. To our amazement, there were about 20 people fishing there, some even in waders, and actually in the pond. This is a first for us, we have never seen this before. It is infuriating, as this is a stop-off for all sorts of migratory ducks, swans, shorebirds, grebes, terns, geese and more. There was not a single one of them in sight today. We are sure that the many fellow birders we see during the year at Reesor Pond will be most disturbed by this as well. It will not take long for the pond to be depleted of fish, and for fishing line and tackle etc. to be afloat, thus endangering all the visitors. Does anyone have any idea if fishing is permitted in a stormwater pond like this, or have any suggestions on who to contact to report this? Town of Markham? Ministry of Natural Resources? [Ontbirds] Reesor Pond, Markham - Ross's, Cackling, 10 Snow Geese - Sat Nov 17
Further to Stan Long's note of this morning, there is at least 1 more white-phase Snow Goose, making the total 10 Snow Geese total (7 white, 3 "blue" phase) plus the long-staying Ross's Goose, at least 2 Cackling Geese although there are likely more in amongst the 1000's of Canadas. Also, a lone American Coot and a few Ruddy Ducks and Bufflehead. I was there at from 3:30pm to 4:05pm and the pond was packed with still more geese & ducks coming in to roost. Cheers & good birding, Frank Pinilla Richmond Hill, ON DIRECTIONS: Reesor Pond lies just north of Hwy 407 and just south of Hwy 7 on Reesor Road in Markham.
