Re: [blind-gamers] Galactic colonies

2023-01-10 Thread Travis Siegel
I'm not sure that will make a difference, because there's still no way
to tell what's going to be around the item you're putting down.  Also,
you kind of need the colony buildings in order to make income, so unless
you can accomplish everything you want with only 1500 bucks, you aren't
going to be able to complete the levels.

It's a real shame, but it is possible to work around it.  I've had as
many as 20 plus colony buildings on a couple planets because of these
stupid restrictions, but it works, even though you'll run into cases
where your hydroponics building appears to be right next to a warehouse,
and you can't use that warehouse as an output, because it's out of range.

That's what's causing this problem.

When you place colony buildings, initially, there's nothing else around them.
After you build a while, the grid wraps around (no clue how many spaces across
each row is, it changes depending on what's going on), so there's no way for
us to tell when something else is going to be placed adjacent to another
building.  This is my only major complaint with the game.  The other biggest
issue for me is there's no way to tell what warehouse things are tied to
without disconnecting them and reconnecting them, which is a real hassle when
you have double digit hydroponic farms, and are trying to get food to a colony
that is feeding from a particular warehouse that just doesn't have enough food
income.  But, what's happening here is that colony buildings don't like being
next to industrial type buildings.  This means, if you have anything other
than parks or hydroponics built in a square next to a colony building, the
colony building suffers from reduced population. It's a real shame we can't
tell where new buildings are going to go in reference to others, but for now,
that's the problem we need to deal with.

Sorry for the trouble, but just keep building colony buildings, hooking them
up to food sources, and eventually you'll get enough colonists to complete
that level.  Alternatively, if you have some of the boosts, you can up your
population that way, click on the upgrade button when you're in the colony
building, and if you have the right item, it will allow you to upgrade the
amount of population the building will hold.

I don't know if you can start from scratch or not, but probably, because
I have two phones, and each one has different levels, (one at 7, the

probably do the trick.

Re: [blind-gamers] nethack (was Am I missing something, guys?)

2023-01-10 Thread Travis Siegel
The problem isn't getting it to run, that's easy, it's written in very
portable ansi c.  The problem is with the cursor tracking, and the way
cursor movement is tracked in windows screen readers.

In dos, I could tell my screen reader to use the @ symbol as the cursor,
then I could check left/right/up/down just with the cursor keys to see
what was around, and even explore the path I'd taken to get there if I
so chose.  That's because dos screen readers used line/column
navigation.  Windows screen readers don't do that, even in a dos prompt,
they always go back to the start of the line when you move up/down (why
that is still escapes me, but that's how it works), so there's no easy
way to know where your character is without doing a whole lot of space
counting, or just skipping the finer aspects of knowing *exactly* what's
around where you are, and how far it is.  In dos, that was trivially
easy, in windows/linux, that's much more problematic.

I also played many of the nethack clones, umoria, rogue, and others, and
they all worked the same way.  Fairly usable under dos, an exercise in
frustration on windows/linux.

Now, empire, that one is a different story, because empire uses a real
cursor, so it always moves you to the exact spot your current piece is
located, which makes moving around and looking at things much simpler,
though it's still not as easy as dos was, since as mentioned, moving
up/down puts you back at the start of the line, which doesn't make a big
difference in the beginning, because there's only a couple characters on
the line, but as the game progresses, it gets increasingly difficult to
track the area around your piece.

I've had excellent luck with Speakup, for what that's worth. Other screen
readers on Linux do behave similarly to Windows unfortunately. There's also
TDSR, which works on both Mac and Linux, and that generally works well.

But the fact remains we need an NVDA add-on or something to enable cursor
tracking in this way, but I'm not sure if that's something that will be easy to
write.
Best,

Nah, there's windows versions of nethack, the problem is that windows screen
readers don't work the same way dos screen readers do, so tracking the cursor,
and checking what's around you on the screen is way harder than it should be on
a windows machine. Interstingly enough, linux screen readers suffer from the
same issue, so no joy there either.

It's possible to use it, it's just a major pain, and takes more effor than it's
worth.

Yes, you can, but that still doesn't solve the problem of the screen reader
not tracking your position on the map correctly. As it happens, NetHack
defaults to putting your PC cursor on the symbol that represents your
character, which is the @ but may also be something else if you end up, say,
transformed into a dragon or whatever.
The need to keep track of the column you are reviewing to get a sense of the
map layout makes these games far easier to play on Linux with Speakup, for
what that's worth.

Can you route the cursor to the @ character the first time it appears in the
game? So far as I know, no cursor exists in nethack. The first @ sign
that appears is the player themselves. After that, werejackals and
werewolves also get the @ character as do other humans in the game like

The biggest problem with NetHack, on Windows at least, is that most Windows
screen readers no longer keep track of the cursor position in a way which makes
it easy to review the map. It's maddening but I don't really have a solution.

For instance, if you had something like this:

|$.|
|.>|

If your cursor was on the >, and you moved up one row, Windows screen readers
will bring you all the way back to the vertical bar on the left side.

Jaws has some support for tracking the cursor properly in the old Windows
command prompt, but not the newer Windows terminal, which is frustrating. NVDA
doesn't anywhere, as far as I know.

Sorry to go on a bit of a rant, this is one of the things which drives me nuts.

This kind of thing happens to me on IOS sometimes, with lots of
programs, I'm guessing it's a (slight) bug in voiceover.

[blind-gamers] Spoiler warning! a hero's call troll quest

2023-01-10 Thread Stephen

Hi Chris and everyone
Thank you so much for your help so far with this game. It is fantastic.
I'm having another problem, this time with the troll quest.
spoiler warning!
I think I might have broken one of the quests. I've
got the journal of titus adrianus, I obtained it quite early in the game before
meeting mathius the ranger. I was listening to a playthrough of the game, and
they talk about the troll den in the mines.
I entered the sewers and then entered the mine and made my way to the troll
den, but there's not much that can be found there. The troll quest hasn't
appeared in my list of quests.
I've got mathias and Gwen adrianus as my two companions.

Is there anything i can do to enable the troll quest and solve titus'
poem?

Thanks.

Oh duh! I forgot you can run Dos via the Run command in older versions of
Windows. But will that work in Win10 or 11? Good idea if it will, though. On

I wonder, two things might work together.
First, make sure graphics is disabled so the whole game plays in ascii.
Second, run nethack from the dos command in windows.

2023-01-10 Thread Jude DaShiell
jaws is job access with speech so it was never really big into gaming.
That's especially unfortunate for new computer users since the way new
computer users gain confidence on computers that are new to them is to
spend lots of hours playing games.
The first pcxt I had didn't have jaws on it, that was artic. It came with
lots of games including infocom titles which was my first introduction to
those games. The training materials freedomscientific uses aren't even
games which is why and how jaws even with its training materials is a slow
and difficult learning curve. Jaws for windows is certainly no better.

Re: [blind-gamers] Am I missing something, guys?

2023-01-10 Thread Shaun Everiss
The only issue with mist though is you can get randomly pked by other
players all over the place even in citties.

And you do need to buy items and really get into it.

I don't know if its my scene.

I also really don't want to be a gamer head like I used to.

At least not till I am of thhat age my family is no more and I am
waiting to die.

That day may come though where I leave this world behind and exist in vr
till I can't its just not that day right now is all.

Re: [blind-gamers] Am I missing something, guys?

2023-01-10 Thread Shaun Everiss

Hi linsey.

Yeah there are not many games anymore.

There are the japanese games in general which are good  and some of the
chinese ones like mist.

then there is ksre which is quite old on audiogames forum I forget the link.

Its just been redone and its a good story.

However the renpy main games page hasn't had a good load of upgrades in
ages.

Outside that, bar audiogame.store there isn't much.

And even their latest game I have reached partly through.

Its interest seems to have died down quickly so who knows.

Technically there are supposed to be a few more but not much.

Sadly I suspect that the audiogames industry isn't as rosy as it was
ages back.

In 1995 through 2010 there was great optomism for the industry as a whole.

But with some mainstreaming, the fact gaming doesn't make cash, and
everything else there are less devs.

A few games use sapi internal os voices and tts engines, a few are self
voicing and a few still exist like sbyw just ticking along but nothing
new really.

If you mean exactly for jaws that may be your problem.

Yes some games have support for jaws  but not many.

With nvda about and internal support on the os pluss some self voicing
themselves, there is probably not going to be actual games for jaws if
not ever at least not right now.

Jaws has its uses but like dolphin reader, freedomscientiffic is 1 of
the last so called access business companies to still be in the market
though not really for general use anymore.

Put it another way no standard newly blind is going to buy jaws, or any
of the other comercials if he doesn't need to.

I do test for dolphin so obviously I do need to run the reader to check
things out from time to time, but even I have thought about my
association for a little.

The only reason I don't drop it as such as its another alternitive if I
ever find something that needs the extra power.

But really nvda will do almost everything any user needs.

Listen to music, write email, surf the net with a brouser, even game.

It will even do some limited to semi advanced ocr if given the right
program, maybe not that well but well enough.

The only things against it are.

1.  because there are no intercepts it doesn't have as many cursers and
virtual modes for advanced work.

Of course most of us using standard software doesn't need those modes so
its largely mute.

2.  being it uses mainstream languages and plugins it needs constant
security and other updates.

Thats fine and all but some users don't like it.

Though if you don't want to you don't need to load any modules bar maybe
the windows 10 and the updater if you want to keep things updated.

They do help at least for programs you use and there are a few extras
you can use to.

And if you don't need anything much more over really basic there is narator.

Its not the most advanced system obviously and its only updated once or
tiwice a year with the major os updates, but its rumored to be
scriptable, and will handle chromium in some way, not tested really and
will do simple tasks.

Its not really a screen reader but if you only need to muck about with
microsoft everything its probably not a problem though nvda gives you a
little choice.

I don't know about good games but I have heard that NVDA, which is a free screen reader, works better with games than JAWS does.

2023-01-10 Thread Day Garwood
Nope, sometimes it just won't send. I don't have spam filtering enabled
and got nothing. Tried again a few days later and got it. Then noticed
that, not only were the keyboard shortcuts exceptionally bizarre, but
also it needs a Java engine. I got put off very quickly at that point.

Cheers.

No not there. checked, and done it twice to get the code. Audio games
emails were bouncing back, so I wonder if it's that. I'm in a care home,
so can't mess about with their settings, oh well, I can't play that one
then.
