Here's one I wrote and have used many times successfully. You may wish to look
up the figure on YouTube if you have difficulty visualizing it:

A2 Gents alle left 1 1/2x

It's been road tested at our local caller's night; not yet at an actual dance.

I'm posting a new dance of mine - the hook is a half hey into a long wavy line
of gents in the center. Haven't seen it before, and I'm wondering if anyone
knows of other dances with this figure. Also, I looked for other dances called
the Portland Reel and couldn't find any, but if that name has

I will be calling my first session of "Challenging Dances" soon, and I have a
few questions:
1. Is there an archived discussion on this topic that any one knows about, and
if so could someone point me to it?
2. If not, I'm wondering about other callers' experiences with
Balancing F/B would be my approach in that scenario. Also a good opportunity to
reinforce giving weight, since that particular movement done repetitively could
irritate the shoulder joints if dancers are not keeping some tension in the
arms.

Great topic, Maia -
I'm reminded of what a college environmental science professor once said: "The
solution to pollution is dilution." In terms of your question, I find one
solution is to call more gigs; that way, there is less time to brood over
mistakes, and the errors become less
Here is one of mine that I have used successfully many times, though the main
figure is drawn more from the Southern Square tradition than the Western
tradition:
Sow the Wheat Contra (improper) Chuck Abell

A1 Bal and swing N (16)
A2 Gents alle
