Highlights of my walk at the Finger Lakes Land Trust's Thayer Preserve
earlier today included a singing Blue-headed Vireo, a small flock of
Golden-crowned Kinglets, and a Hermit Thrush.

I heard what I assume was a crow taken out by an owl in the ravine tree tops
behind my house this summer. It was horribly slow and loud; seemed like a good
10 minutes. I was surprised that no other crows came to its defense.

Well, I found my Saw-whet. Turns out to be a mournful RWBB. Just doesn’t have
the will to sing, I guess. Just a soft toot. Toot toot. At dawn. Or in the
evening, while other RWBB are singing proud and strong... just a soft toot.
Toot.
Thank you for entertaining my quarantine question. I
This morning I heard a series of soft “Toot. Toot toot. Toot toot. Toot.“
While inside of my Fayetteville home, next to Green Lakes State Park. Could it
have been a Saw-whet? If unlikely, any ideas what it could have been?

Humans are not designed to deal with this news. Scientists understand this; why

I just had a couple of Blackpoll Warblers at Stewart Park--one near the
swan pen and the other on the edge of the Fuertes Sanctuary woods.
Sigh...

Dave Nutter and I (and a small group of bird-walk participants) saw the Rusty
Blackbird a few times this morning near the Lab of O feeder garden between 9:00
and 11:00. We all had fabulous looks at the bird's rusty-edged feathers and
white eyes through Dave's scope.

We need to start thinking outside of the box when it comes to nature. Our
culture has been conditioned to think of ourselves as being separate from
nature, i.e., modernism and the machine. I think the Montezuma wildlife drive

I find it counter-intuitive that a large, motorized, polluting, loud, deadly
vehicle is preferable to a human being on foot, or on a bicycle. Perhaps it's
people AND cars that scares the birds. :-)

I was surprised (and delighted) to hear a single Wood Thrush singing this
morning in the woods behind our house. This is about a week earlier than usual.

Hello,
I am a planner with Syracuse-Onondaga County Planning Agency and I'm
researching migratory bird (or otherwise) regulatory requirements and/or

Can anyone recommend a definitive guide for NYS?
Thanks.

Thanks Bill,
Wouldn't this be true of other recognized migratory routes, wildlife refugees,

About half an hour ago, from the parking lot at 3109 N. Triphammer Rd.
(SE corner of Triphammer and Peruville roads), I heard a WHIP-POOR-
WILL calling. It was instantly recognizable despite the competing
spring peepers, toads, and traffic!
