Did anyone do a watch on Cayuga today? While the winds weren't all that
promising it looked like the last possibility for a good while so
for comparison's sake I checked out Seneca Lake at Smith Park.
It was dismal. Had 1 between 0715 and 0730 then 13 between 0800 and 0830.

There was a small showing this morning, just 55 birds heading south, 5
heading north. Began at 0700 and stayed until 0830 under northwesterly
winds.
Most were singles, a few groups of two or three and one group of seven.
Also had two adult Bald Eagles and an immature.

On Sep 25,
I agree with Asher and think what you saw were almost certainly Cormorants.
They are both fishing birds, diving for their meals like Loons do, and they
look very similar. I know they hang out in the area you identified, in a
couple of tall trees on the inlet, and also in a deadfall tree
We were at Cass Park yesterday. Cormorants flying everywhere.

About 9:30 AM today while walking from Cass Park to Hog Hole, we saw what
we thought were loons swimming near the red buoy/lighthouse past the jetty
at the south end of Cayuga Lake. There were about 35. I wanted to report
them to Ebird but was advised they are rare for this date and location,

well. I would guess fifteen in the largest group, mostly solitary but
several pairs which would include adults and/or juveniles.

An environmentally minded ecologically sensitive professional videographer

Getting the youngsters as they learn and perfect soaring and flying would

Late into a lazy morning I started my day's bird list by looking out the living room window and noticed, in addition to the numerous gulls in the air (many kettling possibly southbound Ring-billed Gulls, as Ken Rosenberg described), a COMMON LOON in direct southerly flight high against the clouds.
Much too windy and snowy to band saw-whets last night so we were up early and
feeling Looney. Went to the south lookout at Taughannock and spent a bit over an
hour counting flying loons. Total; count was 53 airborne and two watchers.
