[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park - terns and Red-throated Loon

2013-04-12 Thread Jay McGowan
Stewart Park was cold and rainy today late morning, as expected. Highlights
were two (and a possible third) COMMON TERNS moving around offering
occasional good looks and an adult RED-THROATED LOON straight out
(eventually moving towards the east shore), looking odd in almost full
winter plumage but with an all-dark bill. Not too many swallows around this
morning, but yesterday morning I had a single BANK SWALLOW in with a the
Tree-Barn-rough-winged flocks headed north from East Shore Park. I also met
Bob McGuire and he said he had a transitional FORSTER'S TERN at Myers this
morning that flew south, but we didn't come across it at Stewart while we
were there. The scaup flock off the east end continues to grow, but I
didn't pick out any other odd waterfowl.

[cayugabirds-l] Myers Friday AM

2013-04-12 Thread bob mcguire
I spent a half hour at Myers this morning just after the rain began.
As I had hoped, there were a few good birds on the spit: 8 Bonaparte's
Gulls (still mainly in winter plumage) and a single Forster's Tern
(molting: dark cap coming in, still with white forehead; dark orange
bill w/black tip; bright white primary feathers - seen both at rest
and in flight; no trace of dark carpal bar - to help rule out Common
Tern).

An Osprey was perched on a snag across the creek (Salt Point), and
several dozen Tree, a few N Rough-winged , and a single Barn Swallow
adorned the dripping branches of a creekside willow.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] raven

2013-04-12 Thread nutter.dave
I have seen a single COMMON RAVEN in that area a couple of times recently, once flying north low alongside Pine Tree Rd by the Oxley Equestrian center at dawn, and once later in the day in the field opposite the end of Snyder Hill Rd stretching down to the East Ithaca Recreationway. I'm curious whether it's a young unmated bird or whether it's foraging while its mate tends a nest somewhere in the neighborhood. I wouldn't have guessed this as raven habitat, but then I'm not a raven.--Dave NutterOn Apr 12, 2013, at 07:42 AM, Ray Zimmerman r...@cornell.edu wrote:RAVEN about 7:30 flying over horse pastures on Pine Tree Rd toward East Hill Plaza. [cayugabirds-l] Bohemian Waxwings - Northwood Apts., Lansing

2013-04-12 Thread Scott Haber
Susan Newman and I just came across a flock of about 30 Bohemian Waxwings in
the trees along the road just west of the Northwood Apts. off Warren Road. The
trees are on the north side of the road on the border of the overgrown field
that used to be a public pool many decades ago.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] raven

2013-04-12 Thread Tobias Dean
If anyone wants to observe Ravens come to my house. They have been nesting
in the tall pines at the end of Yaple Rd(and King Rd.)
for at least 2 years. I am a bit concerned they are going to go after my
peaches, they certainly like my compost.
Last summer there was a family hanging around, and I have seen more than 2
so far.
