[cayugabirds-l] Adult Bald Eagle over Union Springs
Saw an adult bald eagle fly SW towards the lake just west of our house yesterday 9 a.m.. At 2 p.m. when I was at the post office, 1/2 mi. from our house, I again saw an adult bald eagle flying SW towards the lake. I hope it is able to take a goose or duck for food since fish are probably down too deep in the lake now. Goose hunting season ends 11 Jan.. Duckseason ended today (9 Jan.). Snow goose season begins 16 Jan. runs through 15 April. Canadas were flying westward over our house (we're 1/2 mi. from the lake)in great nos. about 4:30 p.m.. Mill pond already had several hundred on it whenthe evening flocks came over in great nos.. Ducks seemed to have decided Factorypond was the wiser place to be as I saw only a few on Mill but many gadwall mallards on Factory along with a couple buffles as well as some Canadas. Lots of ice from Frontenac Park out to Frontenac Island. Beware if you drive on Rte. 90 here in Union Springs. Traffic is a nightmare by the gambling hall because the Cayugas have brought in a trailer are selling cigarettes there instead of at thegas station. Cars are lined up IN THE ROAD WAY going north along the side going south, but not completely off the road. With all the big rigs many NYC garbage trucks using Rte. 90, I can see some road rage occurring, esp. if someone gets sideswiped.I was not pleased at having to wait in line as one car at a time was able to turn into the driveway of course, the gamblers tryingto enter or leave weren't helping. Fire trucks ambulancesGas in Auburn city, not on the western outskirts, is $2.41.9. [cayugabirds-l] Fwd: Many raptors at game farm
My fingers were so cold I forgot to type the location earlier this afternoon when I was at Game Farm Road and the Compost today from 3:30-4:30. It seemed like raptor-ville; so I thought I would post. Someone suggested I was looking at Short-eared Owls, which I had never seen before. (Thanks, Sue!) And now I'd like to amend what I saw. If anyone was out there today and can verify anything, please do! I think I saw 6 juvenile Red-tailed Hawks, 2 juvenile SEOs, and 2 unidentified falcons. And they all looked so very hungry! I got a very good look (20 ft) at the gorgeous (black/grey/brown mix) feathers on the back of the SEO while it sat on the posts before they disappeared suddenly. I was looking up for them, and if they were owls, I now realize I should have looked down! And here is a link to a picture, which matches the colors of the birds back, which I definitely saw today, https://www.flickr.com/photos/teagden/4732173060/ I did not have the right angle or enough time to see its face and was distracted by the six hawks in the hedge row that caught the corner of my eye at the intersection of Dodge/Stevenson/Game Farm Road. They were buteo in form when flying, and many had a red tail when the sun was out. I watched them for about an hour as they hunted in the 200+ acres of fields surrounding me. The two smaller hawks showed up near the end of my time there, and I am still not sure after having looked in my bird book. They were very dark on top and white on the underside, falcon-shape, crow-size. I saw a similar-looking one circling over Sapsucker Woods pond one hour earlier, around 3:30pm. The closest look I got was about 60 feet in flight. Could it be the Peregrine??? Joyful birding! [cayugabirds-l] Scoffield owls
We saw 2 Short-eareds swooping around the barn west of Scoffield, just as darkness was falling a few minutes after 5pm yesterday. Sorry, Marie! They appeared about 2 minutes after you left! I wonder -- will the food supply last all winter in this one area, or will they deplete it and move on at some point? We also saw Horned Larks on Buck Rd., southwest of Van Ostrand. [cayugabirds-l] Gos
I just came home after a fruitless search for the Iceland gull, glanced out the kitchen window, and perched in the middle of the backyard near the feeders, bigger than a whing-ding, was an adult N. GOSHAWK. Probably a female, judging by size, grayish breast with many horizontal stripes, and a bright white supercilium. Red eye. It flew off.Alas, not a new Yard bird, as I saw one here several years ago. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Seneca Falls Airport Snowy Owl
Snowy Owl still present at 2:30, slightly west of fenced antenna tower and closer to Martin rd. This was a life bird for me! Thanks to all who found and refound this bird! Also saw a Northern Harrier that flew low over the fields when I first arrived. Thanks again!
