Re: [cayugabirds-l] Possible Western Wood-Pewee: Myers Point Area, Ladoga Park, Lansing, NY
There is some discussion about the dark lower bill, more characteristic of Western wood-peewee, as seen in the photo Ken shared. But “all about birds” notes that juveniles can have all dark bills. Read especially the last line, below. “Eastern Wood-Pewees are olive-gray birds with dark wings, and little to no yellow on the underparts. The sides of the breast are dark with an off-white throat and belly, giving a vested appearance typical of pewees. They show little or no eyering. Adults have thin, white wingbars; those of juveniles are buffy. The underside of the bill is mostly yellow-orange, except in some juveniles.” Laura Laura Stenzler l...@cornell.edu > On Oct 21, 2018, at 11:49 AM, Christopher T. Ken certainly found an interesting bird. I assume he heard no vocalizations or he would have mentioned it. Any pictures from the side showing wing bars? When I've seen likely easterns and westerns in close proximity in Central American, it seems that easterns have two fairly equally weighted wing bars while westerns tend to show one wing bar as being more prominent. None of these physical cues (amount of dark/light on lower mandible, or prominence of wing bars) is as definitive (I think -- ha ha) as their vocalization, but they can help point in a particular direction. Neat bird for sure. Thanks for reporting it. Jody Enck Jody W. [cayugabirds-l] SSW Rusty Blackbirds, etc
Good variety of birds for this morning's SSW bird walk in the weather that soon turned to sleet. The clumps of ash seeds were hosting flocks of Rusty Blackbirds and Purple Finches (up to ten within a single binocular view) along the Wilson Trail north, just south of Owen's Platform. On the pond among mallards and wood ducks was a Gadwall, a male Hooded Merganser, and a female Aythya which had a weak wing spur indicative of Ring-Necked Duck -- maybe someone more expert and/or ambitious wants to turn it into a tufted duck :-). The ducks were in the main pond early, but were flushed to the Sherwood side. According to Pyle and Sibley and the Bird Banding Lab, one can not safely call a Western on visual. At least two measurements are required. Plumage and bill characteristics can provide some additional help but feather wear, age and known geographic variations make such a call iffy at best without the vocalization. Always good to check out a possible. Thanks Chris.
