[cayugabirds-l] Portland Point Osprey nest gone

2012-01-12 Thread Dave Nutter
Today while birding with Ann Mitchell on Portland Point Rd I noticed that the power pole in the Cargill mine complex which for the past couple years held Tompkins County's only Osprey nest of which I'm aware now only holds the intended trio of transformers and crossbar with insulators and wires.  Does anyone know when (and how?) it came down?  Be on the look-out for Ospreys with sticks around the southern part of Cayuga Lake come March and April.  Maybe this year they'll make a more serious effort atop the platform at Treman Marine Park. We saw neither Red-necked Grebes nor Northern Shrikes from Portland Point Rd, but we did see at least four NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS. We also went to Aurora to try to find the Eared Grebe.  Even though the water was still flat we only saw 5 HORNED GREBES from the Wells College boathouse, plus some expected waterfowl: CANADA GEESE, 2 SNOW GEESE (1 adult with 1 immature), MALLARDS, AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, COMMON GOLDENEYE, 5 BUFFLEHEAD, singles of COMMON and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, distant flying small REDHEAD flocks, plus a few of the usual RING-BILLED, HERRING, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park waterfowl

2012-01-12 Thread Nicholas Sly
Mid-day at Stewart Park:

Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) 240
Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) - 1 male, first near the Fall Creek outlet then
drifting into the Aythya raft
Gadwall (Anas strepera) - 2, a pair far out
American Wigeon (Anas americana) 1 male, flying with some Mallards
American Black Duck (Anas rubripes) 32
Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) 720

Two huge Aythya rafts. The raft west of the lighthouse jetty was
larger, too far to scope easily for species composition but it was
still >90% Redhead. The other Aythya listed below were all in the raft
right in front of Stewart, close to shore.
Canvasback (Aythya valisineria) 55
Redhead (Aythya americana) 3500 - 1100 in a raft in front of Stewart,
2400 in a raft west of the lighthouse jetty
Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris) 30
Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) 5 (probably more, I didn't do a
thorough job of delineating Scaup numbers)
Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) 50

Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) 1 female, close and straight out
Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) 20
Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) 6
Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) 1 female, seen once in the Aythya raft
Common Loon (Gavia immer) 3
Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) 1
American Coot (Fulica americana) - 10 Far to the northeast near some docks

Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) 2
Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) - 2 in the weedy patch by the dock

Good Birding,
Nick

[cayugabirds-l] Western Grebe - NO Thursday morning

2012-01-12 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
I checked Myers Point this morning for the Western Grebe, but did not find it.
The water was calm and there was no heat shimmer, although a bit of fog
obscured the opposite shore.

Very little around except Mallards. I found only one COMMON LOON (bill entire)
south of the point, and a male LESSER SCAUP on shore in the private marina
fraternizing with three female REDHEADS while a male BELTED KINGFISHER looked
on.

[cayugabirds-l] Danby Shrike

2012-01-12 Thread bilbaker
In an indirect path to do errands Shannon and I drove up to Nelson and
Miller Rds this morning around 10:30 to look for the N. Shrike. I had
missed it yesterday, but we were immediately successful this morning. It
was initially on the south side of Miller Rd, perched on a hay bale.It then
moved to the N side finally giving us very nice long scope views as it
perched in a fence row tree. This was a life bird for Shannon.

[cayugabirds-l] raft of Redheads

2012-01-12 Thread Elaina McCartney
The raft of several thousand mostly Redheads has reformed at the SW end of
Cayuga Lake. The light at this posting is somewhat poor for species IDs
from my vantage point, but the lake is pretty flat. I'll try to post
their comings and goings for those doing the waterfowl count this weekend.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Broken-bill Loon

2012-01-12 Thread Paul Anderson
As promised:

http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/Resources/rarities-curiosities-and-old-friends

Right now, I only have a page for the aforesaid loon. I think I can find
enough material on the Goose to be respectable.

If someone has a photo and information about the Lansing brown/silver
crow, I'd be happy to put it up.

Finally a reminder: I am more than happy to give edit permissions on the
site to any club member who wants to contribute material directly.

Meena has just informed me that the Common Loon with a broken bill has
been seen at Myers for the past 10 years! First seen when the
nefarious Four Matts were still "shaken up the basin". I'd love to
know when it was first sighted and by whom.
