[cayugabirds-l] Closed wildlife drive @ MNWR

2012-10-30 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
I was there twice last wk. & was mighty grateful for 4 wheel drive along the
thruway because the mud was deep & very slippery. The mud is from the sloppy,
wet, black muck that has been dug out to form the new pools. It is being hauled
over by the river & lots of it gets dropped on the roadway or drops from the
big tires on the big earth movers. S ... the rains of Sandy would have
made it even sloppier. I was amazed at how many potholes had formed along
the main pool from the rains of the previous wk.. I wish the refuge had a
vehicle counter to know how much the drive is used.

Fritzie

Several people have emailed and asked us why the wildlife drive was closed.
We do not know. Wade and Melissa

Why? Mud was hoping to head over there tomorrow. It was muddy last week
along the T-way. Thanks, Janet Akin

We do not know, we went there at 1pm and the visitors center was closed and the

case anyone else was headed there. We imagine it was because of Sandy but, that
is only a guess.

[nysbirds-l] Ross's Gull at Long Point, Cayuga County

2012-10-30 Thread Christopher Wood
Below is a link to a bit more information about the ROSS'S GULL that I
found at Long Point on the east shore of Cayuga Lake today. Needless
to say, this is among the most unexpected birds that I've found, in
part because I had been hoping for Sooty Tern, Royal Tern, or a
storm-petrel. Ross's Gull was far from my mind.

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11900484

This was during a fairly "hot" period where I saw Parasitic Jaeger (my
first on Cayuga Lake), an adult Black-legged Kittiwake (my second for
Cayuga Lake) and this Ross's Gull. Meanwhile at Myers Point, there
were a couple Leach's Storm-Petrels enjoyhed by dozens; the Parasitic
Jaeger from Long Point was found later this afternoon at Myers and
enjoyed by many.

Unfortunately, after looking at my phone to send info to birding list
and our local text message alert system, I could not find the Ross's
Gull again, which explains the lack of additional information during
the day.

I know of a 28th October Ross's Gull from Boulder County, Colorado
that Willie Schmoker found. The only other October one in eBird is a
Pennsylvania record for 9 October in York County.

The other major highlight for me today was a Leach's Storm-Petrel
around 1:15 at Frontenac Park in Union Springs. The awesome number of
Brant moving down Cayuga Lake were also a real treat. I visited
Montezuma very quickly to check for Royal Tern, Northern Lapwing,
American Oystercatcher or other large obvious birds and did not see
anything unexpected -- though 900 Brant at Towpath was awesome! I
suspect I missed many birds in that area since I wanted to get back to
Cayuga Lake.

Hopefully more tomorrow.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Linda and Liz,
I enjoyed hearing about both these reports.
I had over 30 Pine Siskins eating on my deck rail yesterday and probably 18
lovely Cedar Waxwings eating Cedar berries in my front yard today.

  Hello Liz,

Glad you overcame your shyness to report this, kinglets are always great to
hear about and also I always love to vicariously experience.peoples' enjoyment.

Especially as this list seems to decrease in population, it is wonderful to
have people step forward to share special moments. I hope you continue and I
hope it inspires us all to post.

In that spirit, I would like to report two things.

I had a typically wonderfully curious Carolina Wren hopping all around old
flower heads near my deck rail yesterday. Always a treat to see these up close.

And one of the American Crows of the flock that comes to my platform feeder
has returned like a prodigal son. For those of you who do not receive the
Cayuga Bird Club newsletter, I had reported the very sad death from West Nile
Virus of B6, a crow that I had known and seen daily at my feeder for two
years. Only one crow from his flock still came to my platform in the months
since then (July) so I thought all the others had probably succumbed also. But
just last week, one crow that I am able to recognize due to some white
secondary feathers in both wings suddenly reappeared and has become a regular
visitor again. I am happy to report this.

  Thanks again Liz.

Four golden-crowned kinglets, very busy picking something invisible (tiny

Hello everyone,

I'm aware that CayugaBirds isn't generally used for organizing rides, but in
the wake of the most recent bird fallout over Lake Cayuga, I've decided to be
audacious. If anyone with a car was already planning to take a birdwatching
trip down to the lake after 2:30 PM today, either to Myers Point or Long Point,
I would be more than happy to pay for gas (or similar form of reciprocation) in
exchange for tagging along.

[cayugabirds-l] Fox Sparrows & Evening Grosbeaks

2012-10-30 Thread Dan & Kathy C
This morning there were 4 Fox Sparrows working in the leaf litter in one of
our flower beds. About 11:30 a flock of 8 Evening Grosbeaks came to the
feeders. After feeding, they hung out in the top of an ash tree for a
while. No sign of them now at 12:30. We also had varying numbers of Pine
Siskins over the last week as well as several Purple Finches. The usual
yard and feeder birds are feeding heavily today trying to make up for
yesterday.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Golden-crowned kinglets

2012-10-30 Thread Linda Orkin
Hello Liz,

Glad you overcame your shyness to report this, kinglets are always great
to hear about and also I always love to vicariously experience.peoples'
enjoyment.

Especially as this list seems to decrease in population, it is wonderful to
have people step forward to share special moments. I hope you continue and
I hope it inspires us all to post.

In that spirit, I would like to report two things.

I had a typically wonderfully curious Carolina Wren hopping all around old
flower heads near my deck rail yesterday. Always a treat to see these up
close.

And one of the American Crows of the flock that comes to my platform feeder
has returned like a prodigal son. For those of you who do not receive the
Cayuga Bird Club newsletter, I had reported the very sad death from West
Nile Virus of B6, a crow that I had known and seen daily at my feeder for
two years. Only one crow from his flock still came to my platform in the
months since then (July) so I thought all the others had probably succumbed
also. But just last week, one crow that I am able to recognize due to
some white secondary feathers in both wings suddenly reappeared and has
become a regular visitor again. I am happy to report this.

Thanks again Liz.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Myers Tue. AM

2012-10-30 Thread bob mcguire
Alberto joined me after Tim, Chris, & Jeff left around 9:30. He picked
out a calling Greater Yellowlegs that subsequently landed on the spit.
We had another fly-by flock of 18 Northern Pintails and and a mixed
flock of 5 Pintails and 4 American Wigeon. The Long-tailed Duck and
single Brant remained on the water just off the spit when I left just
before 10 am.

I'm feeling a bit shy about posting this - I don't know if it's really

Four golden-crowned kinglets, very busy picking something invisible (tiny

dam foot bridge. Just before 10am today.
