[cayugabirds-l] woodpecker bedtime; further note about count week

2014-01-05 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon as I was leaving the lakeshore to walk home, I heard a HAIRY WOODPECKER calling. After some searching, I saw it fly a short distance in the tall trees overhead, and got it in binoculars - a male. It then flew again in the same direction, but alit on the blue-painted shingle siding of a house, which I noticed had a couple of woodpecker-workings drilled in it. In fact it was perched at the largest of these holes, and it quickly dove in. That was at 4:25pm. It was cool to see a bird go to bed, yet I was uncomfortable about it being within the wall of a  house. It made me think of bot-flies. Often on my walks I am so late going home that I observe no birds on my return trip. After actually seeing a bird go to bed, I thought that would be the case. Then at 4:39 I heard a RED-TAILED HAWK call several times from the Hog Hole woods, although I didn't see it. At 4:51 I was surprised to see a single MOURNING DOVE flying north over Cass Park. In the gathering dusk at 4:56 I saw a single MOURNING DOVE flying south and I wondered if it was the same indecisive bird. At 4:57 a second RED-TAILED HAWK screamed once and flew north past me. A couple minutes later, after I'd walked past where I last saw the Mourning Dove, I again saw the/this insomniac dove fly farther south and across the Inlet. How do birds decide where to sleep, and why couldn't this one make up its mind? Those of you looking at eBird may notice a couple species recorded on 4 January from Cass Park which look like they should have added to the count week. The AMERICAN PIPIT and NORTHERN PINTAIL that a gang of us saw in Sheldrake were recorded on our trip starting from Cass Park, but the eBird marker stayed deceptively in Cass Park, as if we had gone 38 times around the Cayuga Waterfront Trail instead going 19 miles up the lake.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] snowy owls- Indian Field Rd-1 & Potato building-2 more

2014-01-05 Thread Judy Read
3 snowy owls today:

1 on Indian Field Road at the intersection with Poplar Ridge-many thanks to
Anne Marie and Tim Johnson for the scope, along with Meena. I don't think I
would have found the owl tucked into the grasses without their help.

After the Indian Field snowy I had all good intentions of going home but the
car has a mind of it's own and I headed to the Potato building.
One snowy on a pole to the west side of the building at 4:15. That one stayed
put and as I left going east I saw another snowy to the east of the building at
4:50.

Well worth the extra drive.

Large flock of approximately 200 snow buntings behind the potato building and 8
horned larks to the south.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Pintail; no count additions

2014-01-05 Thread Dave Nutter
I took a walk to the lake this afternoon. There's a lot of ice: The inlet is completely frozen, and along with the Stewart Park ice extends well past and around the white lighthouse, halfway past the red lighthouse breakwater on the east side, and almost to the red lighthouse itself on the west side, sweeping north well past our usual west shore viewing spots. I'm curious what will happen to the ice with the rain, wind, and bitter cold that's forecast.Despite the ice I was able to see some neat birds, including a male NORTHERN PINTAIL northeast of the red lighthouse, at least 3 HORNED GREBES scattered far north of Stewart Park, a single PIED-BILLED GREBE in the southeast part of the lake, a single AMERICAN COOT hiding under the western docks, a single DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT resting on the piling cluster (which I determined by viewing past #883 NYS-89 is outside City of Ithaca waters), and, viewing from the parking area for #907 NYS-89, the group of 2 male & 4 female WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS which I assume is the same group that was in the area for many weeks. I found the Northern Pintail too late to include in the count week, while yesterday's Northern Pintail in Sheldrake was within the time frame but a dozen miles or so outside the count circle. Ken's Cackling Goose today is similarly inside but too late. And the continuing Short-eared Owls which Marie Read reported along Lake Road in Ledyard were within the time frame but also way outside the circle. As far as I've heard, no species were added during count week. --Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Another shrike, etc

2014-01-05 Thread Susan Fast
Late afternoon, I went trolling for owls. I, too, found a dark phase
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in a tree top along Creamery Rd., outside of Slaterville.
Then at the crest of Hart Rd., Town of Dryden, an adult NORTHERN SHRIKE was
hunting in the hedgerow there, at 1630h. No owls.

I was wondering who's tracks I followed. The same mix of winter field birds
were on Cornell Lane in Dryden with viewing somewhat easier. There was also a
nice flock of Turkey's (21) and a dark phase Rough-legged Hawk.
