Re: [cayugabirds-l] Blue grosbeak

2020-05-06 Thread Asher Hockett
Congratulations!
On May 8th, 2013 we had a Blue Grosbeak visit a feeder in Danby, south of
Ithaca, so the timing is perfect. 10 minutes and then gone. A lifetime
highlight.
Maybe we will see one here in Albuquerque!

[cayugabirds-l] Blue grosbeak

2020-05-06 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
A lifer for me!

I work at the Montezuma Audubon Center, and earlier today someone sent us a
picture saying she thinks her husband saw a blue grosbeak at work, which is at
the Seneca Meadows Landfill in Waterloo. I confirmed the picture ID, and made
some calls and was able to meet up with the district manager of the landfill,
as well as the original spotter, Dan. Dan graciously took me to the spot where
this male blue grosbeak has been observed since Monday attacking his reflection
in windows and mirrors of the heavy equipment. It was certainly a blue
grosbeak! I will be posting pictures to the MAC fb page later, and have of
course reported to eBird.

The location of the bird is literally in the dead center of the landfill. It is
not easily accessible, and I don’t know if I could find that spot again without
an escort. I did warn the district manager though that people may be contacting
them to see for themselves!

Happy birding!

[cayugabirds-l] cowbird and phoebe

2020-05-06 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,
I just witnessed one of those sad natural scenes - a female cowbird stole two
eggs from a phoebe nest, which is above the light at our back door, and
proceeded to eat the yolks. Phoebes are common cowbird hosts and I assume she
will lay in that nest, and that's I know this is just the way things are, but
still sad to see especially after watching the phoebes build and start to
incubate.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Crane nest, Main Pool Montezuma

2020-05-06 Thread Dave Nutter
Reuben Stoltzfus just told me about a Sandhill Crane nest he saw yesterday from
the Main Pool tower at Montezuma NWR, looking north about 200yards just on the
far side of a water channel. The adults were well camouflaged and they had at
least 1 very tiny chick, so small that it seemed not to have left the nest. I
don’t know how long that situation would last while waiting for egg #2 to
hatch, or whether they would continue to brood the young or return there, but
it may be worth looking for today or tomorrow, as well as scanning closely for
the adults in the vicinity.
