Our back yard feeder has attracted a drop-dead gorgeous male Purple Finch
for the past two days. I noticed this afternoon that he seems to raise the
feathers on the top of his head while he's scanning from the nearby tree,
giving him a bit of a Mohawk appearance. Has anyone else seen such a thing?

Sightings off Elm Beach Road, Romulus, 4.18.15:
- 3:15 p.m., a flight of 45-50 Double-Crested Cormorants flying low over
the lake and in a long formation, heading north.
- 2:30-4:15, three separate 'couples' of Common Mergansers, just riding the
waves.

least one has been here during the past eight summers, occasionally two.

- Several dozen swallows swirling around the same general area and out over
the lake. Until now there have been only three Northern Rough-winged
Swallows. The new arrivals have yet to stop moving long enough to be
identified - to be continued.

Contrary to a post earlier this month, it appears that the Red Tail Hawks
who nested last year near Stout Road in Seneca County haven't deserted the
area after all. This morning we were spotted by a stunning adult as we came
around a bend above the ravine. S/he took up a station in one of the
talle
Easily fifty - and quite possibly more - Cormorants have flown north during
the last five minutes, in variable groups and as singles. We've had quite a
few sightings during the month, but this was truly remarkable.

Seventy-four DC Cormorants just flew north offshore of Elm Beach. Perhaps a
dozen more are still cruising around the cove below Thirsty Owl's boat
dock, but I cannot say if the first flight came from that location.
This huge flock of DCC's is completely new. We usually see several random
birds dur
- First 2015 group of Mallard ducklings this morning - seven.
- On Sunday we noted a family of Canada Geese - eight goslings. This is
definitely a first in our so-far fifteen years on Elm Beach. The number of
offspring is, I believe, accurate, though the parents are so cautious that
they take the
F Red-Breasted Merganser right now with two presumed offspring, warned off
another F of the same . She caught a very substantial fish but did not seem
to share it with the offspring.

Not out of the ordinary, but a F Common Merganser and six ducklings just
passed us, heading north. This might be the lone F Merganser who has been
hanging around our area for the past few weeks, occasionally vocalizing.
The young are clearly not long out of the shell. Lovely sight!

For the past 24 hours we have not seen a single hummer at either of the two
feeders, both of which have been being emptied within 48 hours. I even went
out to 'taste' the brew in one of them to make sure I really HAD sweetened
the water! Is it just us or have others had this curious non-drama?

The F Common Merganser and her eight offspring cruised by this morning. The
merglings are nearly mom's size, and close to her colors as well. Very
regal!
We still have a few Rough-Winged Swallows flitting about, sometimes even
going under the dock. I looked carefully last weekend for any sign of a

There were numerous loons off Elm Beach Road in Ovid this afternoon, as
well. I would guess fifteen in the largest group, mostly solitary but
several pairs which would include adults and/or juveniles.

a.m.this morning. As s/he moved farther north s/he was harassed by a lone
gull; the gull didn't seem serious and the eagle ignored the far-misses.

One adult and one juvie Bald Eaglet checking out the action off Elm Beach

For the second Saturday morning in a row, I have had a Cooper's Hawk in the
back yard. Last week s/he simply did a fly-by, but this morning s/he lit in
the Blue Spruce and had a good look around. All the feeder birds had fled,
so no breakfast was had by the interloper and I got a decent look at the

Yes, there was an Osprey nest there last summer, which we were able to
observe during nest season - but only in passing! I have not been that far
north on 89 as yet this spring.

A friend has had a fledged but still very young bird on her patio since
early morning. S/he keeps calling for parental guidance/food -to no avail.
If my friend were to feed the bird, what would be appropriate? She believes
it is an Eastern Kingbird or something similar. Short but very sharp bill!

We just had a male Kestrel in our small backyard area. We have a Sharpie
once in a while, but this was the first Kestrel I've seen anywhere except
on local power lines. He scoped out the possible breakfast items from two
locations but sadly for him there were no birds in view at that time, even
tho
She just left, making a dramatic swing through our back yard and thereby
completely undoing the squirrels and birds therein. I'm way behind on my
work but it was MORE than worth it to watch her enjoy some down time. Such
