[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl @ Morgan road
Based on intelligence I received from Mark Chao, I stopped by the DEC facility on Morgan Road, just north of Savannah, yesterday in hopes of seeing short-eared owls. Unfortunately, I did not make it up there until 6:20 (Mark reported them being active up to an hour before sunset) but was rewarded with great views of at least three short-eared owls. Two were prowling the vegetation and provided numerous close views, albeit with failing light. One bird was on the ice, possible with prey but it was far enough out that I couldn't be sure. I had not previously had the opportunity to hear them vocalizing like they were last night. There were spectacular numbers of waterfowl in flight, in fields, and in any open water throughout the Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area. It was quite an evening! [cayugabirds-l] Action on Hunt Hill
I came home this afternoon and could see something struggling in the poultry fence I have around my chicken coop. My first thought that a chicken had gotten out and was trying to force its way back in but quickly realized that it was a northern goshawk that was struggling in the fence. I went into the house to get my fireplace gloves and a blanket that I planned to throw over it whilst I tried to extricate it from the fence. Much to my surprise the bird flew off as I approached and landed on a nearby branch. I went back to the house to grab the camera and got a couple of distant shots before it flew off. As I approached the fence I could see that one of the roosters was stuck in the fence. Apparently, the goshawk was trying to pull him through. I pulled the rooster out of the fence and left him there hoping that the goshawk would return. About 20 minutes later it did and flew / hopped / dragged the rooster about 10 yards before it gave up and started eating. I was able to quietly approach and take a few more photos but unfortunately there was some brush between me and the action. I left the goshawk feeding on the rooster. I checked on the carcass after dark and it looked like what I have always assumed was typical of a raptor meal -- bird on its back with the breast muscles removed. I only get the digest so don't know if this has been reported today. At 3:45pm The SNOWY OWL was perched on the same post that I saw her(?) on last week. While I was watching she flew and landed on a utility pole on the south side of Fall Creek Road next to the Cornell barns. I saw a beautiful adult northern Goshawk perched in a tree above an old barn foundation half way up the north side of Yellow Barn Road this evening at around 6:45. On another note, this past weekend I had pine siskins and common redpolls join the regular Am. goldfinches at my feeder up near the top of hunt hill road. Other than a single redpoll a month, or so, ago I had seen neither all winter. About 20 minutes ago I saw a lone American Wigeon loafing on ice in Virgil Creek just downstream of the Springhouse Rd bridge in Dryden. I don't recall ever seeing waterfowl in that reach before though I expect wood ducks.
