[cayugabirds-l] Myers around 9:45A
I made a very brief rainy stop at Myers around 9:45 this morning. Visibility was lousy due to the rain and mist. Aside from the usual RB Gulls and Mallards I found a flock of about 100 Brant north of the point, and a flock of 50 DC Cormorants and a few Black Scoters just S of the point. There was also a dark grebe near the Brant that was possibly a RED-NECKED GREBE. The lighting was lousy, but based on it's size compared to the Brant (smaller, but not significantly so), profile and bill length Red-necked seems like the most likely ID. Shannon and I made a few stops late this AM into very early afternoon. Birds of note were as follows: Myers Point and surrounding area (11AM-11:45) 7 HORNED GREBES close to the western side of the lake straight out from the point. (Probably the same Bob saw later this afternoon), 1 COMMON LOON just south of the lighthouse. A small fock of REDHEADS that came in landed N of the point. Drake Rd (11:50-!2) 3 ROBINS mixed in with a flock of Starlings in trees across the road from the house with a nice feeding set up near the N end of Drake Rd. East Shore Park (12:10-12:30) A large flock of Aythya probably 1/2 mile N of the park, of mostly Redheads and a few Scaup sp mixed in, a single LONG-TAILED DUCK just south of straight out past the ice edge. Stewart Park (12:30-12:50) A MERLIN sitting on the snag across from the boat house. We saw a variety of other expected sps, the ones mentioned above were the most noteworthy. [cayugabirds-l] Aurora Earred Grebe and Bat
I spent the morning birding with a group of 7 folks, most of whom continued around the lake after we split up in Aurora. I needed to be home earlier. One bird and a surprising mammal were of note in Aurora. The EARRED GREBE, which was with a group of 9 Horned Grebes. was straight out from the boat house perhaps 1/4 mile. Dave Nutter initially found it, and we all got decent if distant views. The other note was a BAT of unknown species which was seen by several of us (Bob McGuire and myself for sure and I'm not sure about others) flying over the bay south of the boat house. It occasionally dipped down to the water, then finally flew up into the trees near by and we lost sight of it. It appeared quite active and agile. If anyone has any notions about what species this could possibly have been or other commentary it would be appreciated. Today was warm and sunny, but this seems very unusual to me at this time of year. I just (8:15 AM) had a single female EVENING GROSBEAK at my porch sunflower seed feeder. The address is 10 South Rd in Caroline Center. This is just barely within the basin limits, but is definitely in. I will be out for much of the morning, but the feeder is visible from the road and the drive way. I have one poor but recognizable pic that I will figure out a place to post later. It is very possible that it had been hit or tumbled by a car. I've seen at least 2 instances of birds being hit and sort of stunned by cars, both involving larger birds (Am. Crow and Ring-billed Gull) where the birds were stunned, but were able to recover after a short while. This can happen with window strikes as well, where a bird is stunned but will fly off after a few minutes. At about 9:30 I was driving south on Lake Ridge Rd from King Ferry and found a PEREGRINE FALCON sitting on the top of a tree right across from the Ferry Tales Gift Shop. She (pretty sure based on size) flew off across the field carrying part of a meal when I stopped and got out of my car for a better look. [cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeak and other feeder birds
The female Evening Grosbeak I have previously reported is still here. I heard her yesterday late in the morning and she showed up early this afternoon at the feeders. One interesting behavioral note: she won't tolerate Blue Jays on the feeder when she is there. Today, for the fourth time since she arrived, just about a month ago, I watched her chase Jays away from the feeder while she was feeding. They are the only others I've seen her chase off. I came home from errands early this afternoon to a flock of 15 Common Redpolls crowded onto my porch feeder, causing a bit of confusion for the local B C Chickadee group. Late this morning while I was stopped at the light at Clinton St and Rt. 13 a Raven flew over Rt 13 flying basically west to east. This is the first Raven I have seen in the down town area. Have I just been missing them? I am curious if others have seen Ravens actually in down town. I made a brief and very chilly stop at Myers around 10 this morning, finding nothing unexpected at first. The surprise was 53 TUNDRA SWANS loafing and feeding to the west of Ladoga, as well as 3 in the private marina. There were 6 Canvasbacks just off Ladoga as well, which flew farther out into the lake as soon as I got out of my car. To add to the list of birds seen on lake trips the last few days- on a Sunday trip up the lake Shannon and I found a female WOOD DUCK on the Mill Pond in Union Springs. The only other birds we found that was not mentioned previously were the 3 Turkey Vultures we saw on Seybolt Rd (Town of Varick if I remember correctly). We found Red-winged Blackbirds in various places, and at least for me perhaps the nicest find was the E. Bluebird we saw sitting on a wire on Ellis Hollow Rd about 1000 ft from Rt. 79. [cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club trip
While the Cayuga Bird Club trip this morning was small in participant numbers, just Bob McGuire and myself, we did find a very nice variety of birds. This was a half day trip, and we went up the east side of the lake to Mud Lock, at which time we split up, Bob heading farther north and I back towards Ithaca. I'll mention just highlights here. Our first stop was Stewart Park. By far the most interesting birds were the Ring-necked Duck/Scaup hybrid and the Red-breasted Merganser that Jay McGowen mentioned earlier. We walked briefly into the Renwick woods hoping for a E. Phoebe, but came up empty. On the way to Myers Point we found 5 Turkey Vulture's on Drake Rd. Myers was very quiet, but we did find a Horned Grebe off Ladoga. We made a brief stop on Lake Rd (going down to Long Point SP) to listen for E. Meadowlarks, but the best we came up with was a very convincing Starling imitating a Meadowlark. We had a very good stop at the boat house in Aurora finding 10 Horned Grebes, the EARRED GREBE and a RED-NECKED GREBE. The Red -necked Grebe was not too far out from the dock, and the Earred Grebe was quite a bit farther out with 3 Horned Grebes, which made a nice comparison. The ponds in Union Springs were very quiet, though we did find the Screech Owl in the box at the Factory St. pond. From there we went to Cayuga, where we stopped at the machine shop on Water St (?) N of the town offices. There were perhaps 500 mixed Aythya to the north with a few others ducks mixed in, several Am Widgeon and a single N. Shovelor being the birds of note. While there we had a number of flocks of Snow Geese fly over going south. In these we noted 2 significantly smaller birds, ROSS' GEESE. Our last stop together was at Mud Lock, where we found 2 Ruddy Ducks. We did not see any eagles at or near the nest there. From here I headed home and Bob headed up towards the Carncross/ Morgan Rd area. Inspired by Jays success last night Shannon and I checked several places in Caroline this evening for Woodcocks, hearing at least one at each stop we made. We stopped on Boiceville Rd (a total of 4 birds heard from both sides of the road despite the current Shickel shack construction going on), Ellis Hollow rd near Rt 79 (a single bird), Creamery Rd (one bird) and finally on Chestnut Rd near Old 76 Rd (at least 2 and probably 3 heard). I arrived home from town this evening close to 7PM to a rather nice surprise - 4 male and 1 female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks on my porch feeders all at once. The feeders are about 2 ft apart, so I was able to see them all through a single window. [cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker-Yes
Shannon and I drove up to Aurora this morning to look for the Red-headed Woodpeckers previously reported in Aurora. We were there for about 20 minutes before one flew from the west side of Rt. 90 to the woodlot where others had found them. The bird we saw flew initially to a tree on the edge and then to the Sycamore Jay mentioned, where I lost it for a few minutes. I saw it fly again a bit to the N where it stayed sitting on a horizontal branch affording us both good views. Also in the same general area were an Osprey, Belted Kingfisher, E Wood Pewee, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Catbird and Baltimore Oriole. We checked Ledyard Rd for Grasshopper Sparrow but came up empty, but with the wind and contruction noise up the road we easily could have missed them... Hi Bob, I have lived with Mulberries (both red and white varieties) in my yard at several points in my life and never seen anything like this. I have often eaten them myself. I have seen birds eating Mulberries to no ill effect, and I have seen birds intoxicated from Mulberries, as well as Cherries that have fallen and fermented. I do wonder whether the roots of this tree have tapped into something toxic/lethal to birds, but not toxic to plants, and that it has been passed to the fruit. Is it possible that there was any kind of dumping in the area before your friend lived there? While I know this statement will seem obvious, I'm going to say it anyway, no one should be eating berries from those particular trees unless the fruit has been tested for toxic chemicals etc... I should have posted this yesterdayWe had a Yellow-rumped Warbler at one of our feeders late yesterday (1/4) AM. Unfortunately we are outside of the Christmas count circle.It was seen once, and flew when (I'm assuming) it noticed my movement in the house. I have not seen it again today. Today we have had a rather pugnacious Brown-headed Cowbird around that was assertive enough to chase 2 Blue Jays from a picnic table I had put seed on. Both times it leveled itself out, spread it's wings part way and charged the Jay, which flew off to a branch nearby. Shannon and I stopped at Dryden Lake mid morning, and found it very quiet, finding mostly the same as Collen R. Our most interesting sightings where Jane Graves, and a bit later on, the Rusty Blackbirds she had mentioned to us. They were along the Schug trail right near the bench marked 3.5 mi. We made a quick run up to Montezuma as well, stopping only at mud lock, the visitors center and tchasche pool due to time considerations. We saw 2 young in the eagle nest at mud lock. The visitors center had lots of GW Teal, a few B-w Teal, N Shovelors, Gadwall and Ring-necked Ducks. The main pool itself was almost empty. One note is that the wildlife drive seemed to be closed at the outflow from the main pool, with a sign there telling visitors to turn around... Tschache was more active, but we didn't find anything there new except Am. Coot. Shannon and I had six siskins (try saying that 10 times fast) at our feeders this AM joining with the resident Goldfinch flock. Also our first of year Y-B Sapsucker started clanging on the metal roof of the barn 2 days ago and I heard the first Field Sparrow here this morning. The Sapsuckers nested about 30 ft off the deck last year. They were quite entertaining, more or less ignoring our presence on the deck and going about their business w/o much apparent concern. Hopefully the will find a similar spot to their liking this year. [cayugabirds-l] Hoary Redpoll and Snow Buntings
This morning around 9:30 I looked out at the Redpolls and other birds at the feeders and found an overall lighter looking Redpoll with a white rump, and after a bit of watching, got a good enough look to confirm clean unstreaked under tail coverts, the first Hoary Redpoll on our yard list. It was feeding not at the feeders, but on the Black eyed Susan seed heads we had left in the front garden. Later this morning on my way home coming over Buffalo Hill Rd I found a flock of close to 100 Snow Buntings on the fields of the Snow Farm. This is the farm towards the south end of Buffalo Rd (the only farm on Buffalo Rd.) While I did look for Longspurs, and found none, it was not a long look, as it was quite windy up there and I was less warmly covered than I could have been... [cayugabirds-l] late post: bird club trip 1/27/13
Donna Scott, Linda Orkin, Ann Mitchell and Judy Thoroughman joined me for a local half day of birding. When we met at the Lab at 7:30 it was snowing moderately. After a brief discussion we decided to go part way up the lake as far as Aurora. Before leaving we stopped at the feeders on the N side of the lab. Here we found approximately 100 Redpolls, as well as Am Goldfinch, White-throated Sparrow, Morning Doves, and Black-capped Chickadees. We did not notice any Hoary Redpoll candidates On our way down to East Shore park we found 2 Red-tailed Hawks along Rt. 13. The ice edge was almost up to the park, and past the red light house on the west side of the lake. That made looking through the sitting Gulls fairly easy, though we only found the 3 expected species, Herring, Ring-billed and Great Black-backed. On the lake water fowl included Am Coot, Common Merganser, Hooded Merganser, Canada Geese, Mallard, Common Goldeneye, We did not find the previously reported Earred Grebe, but the visibility was poor at best. We stopped at Cayuga Vista Dr. and drove down Drake on the way to our way Myers Point. Both were very quiet, with no Shrike obvious at Cayuga Vista. On Drake Rd we added N. Mockingbird and Juncos. The feeders near the N end of Drake proved useless as there were 2 dogs running loose. At Myers we added Greater and Lesser Scaup, and Redhead, and a single American Pipet. We drove slowly up towards Aurora adding a few birds along the way such as N. Cardinal and Blue Jay. The boat house in Aurora was definitely productive. The snow had stopped and we viewed from the upper parking area. We found a group of 5 Horned Grebes almost immediately, along with Black Duck, Common Loon and Bufflehead. The second group of 6 grebes we found directly out from the boat house was initially swimming directly away from shore. When the turned we found an Earred Grebe along with with 5 Horned Grebes. Right after we found the Earred Grebe almost all of the waterfowl took flight heading south. The reason was 3 adult Bald Eagles coming in from the north. The circled around just south of us then headed back north again, a pair first and the 3rd shortly after. It seemed as if it was a pair chasing off an interloper. We had one other interesting find at the boat house as well, and that was a calling Screech Owl, which most of us heard clearly. We did not visually find it, but it certainly did get the local Chickadees, Titmice and Jays fairly worked up. The was also another N Mockingbird in the shrubs near the lot. On the way back south we took Lake Rd past Long Point State Park. On the wires as we were coming back up towards Rt 90 was a male Am Kestral. We stopped and checked the feilds for a bit, but the Kesral was basically all we saw. We also had one unidentified raptor sitting way down the hill along the tree line. I am comfortable saying that it wasn't a Red-tail, but by the time we got scopes on it's location it had vacated. On the way back to the Lab we drove several back roads leading to Lansingville Road with the hope of Horned Larks or Snow Buntings but struck out in that arena. [cayugabirds-l] Red-shouldered Hawk near Brooktondale
Around 4 PM on my way home from town I was stuck behind school bus traffic on Brooktondale Rd. about a 1/2 mile from Rt79. As I was waiting a fairly large hawk flew across the road towards Six Mile Creek. My initial reaction had been Coopers, but the tail was very dark with narrow white bands. It landed long enough on the near side of the creek for me to get a decent look through binoculars, and it was indeed a Red-Shouldered. It flew across the creek and I lost it. As I was getting into my car it started calling, a loud kee yur repeated several times, but I wasn't able to re-find it visually. While I did not notice any geese going overhead last weekend here in Caroline Center last weekend (though I was outside very little) I did have flocks of Snow Geese go over several times today, as well as a Raven circling in a northerly direction, though it is certainly possible that was one of the local birds. I looked out the window at my feeders at about 2:15 to find a Sharp-shinned Hawk sitting on one of our platform feeders about 6 feet from the window. It sat for almost 30 seconds then noticed my movement and flew up into the nearby cedar when I tried to move to a different window. Very cool view! Ann Mitchell and I went out looking for owls yesterday evening, stating early enough to heard Woodcocks as well. We found what I will confidently say were at least 5 individual Woodcock behind the airport near where Snyder and Mohawk meet. We were in the vicinity till well after 9 but could not raise a hoot in terms of owls (tried for Saw-whet, Screech and Barred in that order in various spots along Mohawk and Neimi Rds.) Afterwards we stopped on Sapsucker Woods Rd at the trail crossing, only trying for Barred, with the same result... I have not heard any Woodcock at home, but have only been listening in a cursory manner as our upper fields, where we regularly have them, are still snow covered... [cayugabirds-l] Sunday SFO Montezuma trip
Seven SFO participants joined me for an all day trip up the lake and in the Montezuma area on Sunday. The morning was very windy, overcast and chilly. While the afternoon brought out the sun, and a bit of warmth, the wind was relentless all day, which was a hindrance in finding and getting clear looks at some birds. We started on Drake Rd. hoping for Bohemian Waxwings. While we didn't find them we did find a nice variety of other birds including Carolina Wren, Song Sparrow, N. Cardinal, Blue Jay, House Finch, Red-winged Blackbird, Robin, and Mourning Dove. Ladoga and Myers Point were our next stop. Here despite the wind and whitecaps we found Am Coot, Ring-necked Duck, Redhead Bufflehead, Mallard, Common Loon, Killdeer, Ring-billed Gull and Great Black-backed Gull. Due to the wind we made only brief stops on Lake Rd and at Long Point. Our next genuinely productive stop was in Union Springs, at both the Factory St. and Mill Ponds. The Factory St. pond gave us the first sun shining through the clouds on great views of Gadwall and Blue-winged Teal, and a beautiful female Belted Kingfisher. We heard N Flicker here, but never did see it, and found Brown-headed Cowbirds as well. The Mill Pond was almost devoid of waterfowl, but we did find both Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, giving us good views of the difference in bill sizes, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Tufted Titmouse and Black-capped Chickadees and Tree Swallows. From Union Springs we went up to the Village offices in Cayuga, having good looks on the way at Osprey both on a nest platform and one sitting on the ground near by. At the village offices we added Greater Scaup, and then on to Mud Lock where we had good views of the new Bald Eagle nest and one adult Eagle. The chicks were hunkered down and not visible. At the visitor center and wildlife drive at Montezuma we added Green-winged Teal, Canvasback, and one of our highlight birds, a Caspian Tern, seen from the tower, sitting with several Ring-billed Gulls in the shallow water on the right side of the wildlife drive. At Tschache Pool we found Pied-billed Grebes, which at least a few of us saw engaging in courtship behavior, Trumpeter Swans, and had a chance to hear Coot calls. The highlight here was a Peregrine Falcon initially seen sitting on a mound of cattails quite far out. It took a bit of patience to get a solid ID, but we were able to get good enough views between wind gusts to be confident. When it took off it's shape, long pointed and strong flight despite the wind added to our certainty. We skipped Mays and headed up towards Savannah with a stop on East Rd. just below the over look. Several of our group, though not all, saw N. Harrier. Here we found DC Cormorants, Ruddy Ducks, and several Great Blue Heron, as well as a Red-tailed Hawk with prey in the fields across the road. It was joined by a second Red-tailed Hawk, and they ended up in what looked like a confrontation over the prey, with one on either side of it, both with wings spread wide. The second bird left after perhaps 30 seconds. Our final stop was briefly at Carncross Rd. with the hope of finding shorebirds. The wind was very strong and getting solid ID's of the shorebirds we did see proved not possible. On the way back down the east side of the lake we added our last bird if the day, an Am. Kestral sitting on a wire. All told despite the wind a very good day of birding. [cayugabirds-l] Bohemian Waxwings
SFO group 5 had great looks at 3 Bohemian Waxwings at the Edwards Cliff Preserve at the end of Teeter Rd. These particular birds were perched openly just inside the preserve to the south of the open area near the entrance. There was a flock of approximately 75 waxwings while we were in the preserve that we only got a very brief look at before they flew becoming sillouetes against the clouds. The birds I saw clearly before they took off were Cedars, but it wouldn't surprise me if there were Bohemian mixed in. I don't know Bohemian calls at all well, but mixed in with the clearly Cedar calls were calls that sounded different to me. [cayugabirds-l] Sunday SFO Derby Hill trip group Y
Our group's experience at Derby Hill was very similar to the group led by Dave Nicosia with a few exceptions which are worth noting. At the lake overlook several of us had good looks at a Golden-crowned Kinglet in the pines on the west side of the overlook. From the N look out area we walked down the road and checked out the lake from end of Sage Creek Rd. Here looking west we found many more Red-breasted Mergansers and a number of Bufflehead. We stopped at the blind overlooking Sage Creek Marsh. The only new bird we saw here was a Wood Duck. After Derby Hill we headed towards the Montezuma area. Our first stop was at the small shorebird area on Savannah Spring Lake Rd. The only shorebird we found here was a single Greater Yellowlegs. We walked back down the road to creek finding A pair of Ring-necked Ducks, a few N Shovelers and a pair of Am. Wigeon in the marshy area N of the road. When we got back to the cars we noted a Great Blue Heron with a small fish. We watched as it took about a minute to get the fish oriented correctly to swallow it head first. At Carncross Rd. we found more Yellowlegs, both Greater and Lesser, and a Caspian Tern but little else. The Knox-Marcellus over look was more productive, with a few Snow Geese still there, lots of N Shovelers, Ring necked Ducks, a few Canvasback and several Great Blue Herons. Our last brief stop was at Tshacache pool. Here we found Blue-winged and Green -winged Teal, Gadwall, Am. Coot, Pied-billed Grebes a Bald Eagle and as we were leaving the best sighting of the day for our group. Literally as we were heading for the cars one of us noted a Sandhill Crane flying across the pool headed towards the NE. If flew over the tees and disappeared but every one got identifiable even if distant views. On our way back down the east side of the lake we noted more Osprey, at least 3 Am. Kestral, and on Lake Ridge Rd our only N. Harrier of the day. All in all a good day of birding. While we've had a single White-throated Sparrow around for at least 2 weeks, today all of a sudden we have at least 6. I kept looking for White-crowned but no luck so far. Other yard birds include 8+ Purple Finches, an Eastern Towhee singing throughout the day it seems, a Red-breasted Nuthatch that appeared 2 days ago, finally Tree Swallows up at our nest boxes and the usual coterie of resident birds all giving us a nice morning chorus. For the second morning in a row there has been an Indigo Bunting at our feeders here on South Rd. Other feeder birds include White-crowned Sparrows, at least 2 pairs of Purple Finches, and 3 pairs of Rose-breasted GRosbeaks, and I think another male hanging around. For the first time this year we left windows open last night. I woke up at about 2 am to far off rumbles of thunders and a pair of Barred Owls calling from the other side of Old 76 Rd. While we have at least 2 pairs of Purple Finches and more Goldfinches than I can easily count, as well as usual numbers of other common species, from what I have noticed we have no House Finches around at all, which is very unusual. Our Indigo Bunting population jumped to 4 yesterday, with all of them, 3 males and a single female all at the feeders at one time late yesterday afternoon. Along with the Purple Finches, R-b Grosbeaks and Goldfinches it was quite the show! I was joined by three people for the Cayuga Bird Club Trip on Sunday 2/22. This was a half day trip in which we made a number of stops going as far north up the lake as Aurora. It was a gray chilly day, but much warmer than it has been, and the sun made a brief appearance at the end of the trip. Initially at the lab we had a Red-tailed Hawk, a fly over Pileated Woodpecker, Am. Goldfinches, Black-capped Chickadees, a bright male Cardinal, Downy Woodpecker and Blue Jays. Driving along Drake Rd. the only new birds were Mourning Doves, Juncos, our only White-throated Sparrow of the day, and Tree Sparrows. Our next stop was down to Portland Point. There we found Am. Coot, Tundra Swan, Common and Red-breasted Mergansers, Redheads, a few Canvasback, Black ducks, Common Goldeneye, Herring, and Great Black-backed gulls, Ring-necked Duck and Scaup sp. Ladoga, the private marina, and Myer's Point added a few new birds, Hooded Merganser, Carolina Wren, Mallards, two Bald Eagles and a Belted Kingfisher and two Gadwall at the marina. On the way up to Long point we found a Ring-necked Pheasant along Lake Ridge Rd, which gave up great close up views. Checking Center Rd and Ledyard Rd we had our first Horned Larks on Center Rd. and Ledyard Rd added Snow Buntings to the list. on Lake Rd heading down to Long Point we saw a Mockingbird flying across the road. At Long Point SP we saw our first White-winged Scoters and the only Common Loon of the day. WE made a stop along the road from Long Point back up to Rt. 90 and played a mobbing tape hoping for Golden-crowned Kinglets, but the only new bird we found was Tufted Titmouse. Our final stop was at the boat house in Aurora, and there we added Horned Grebe to our list. The sun started to peak out from the clouds on our way back to the lab and was out by the time we got back. All in all a good morning of birding. [cayugabirds-l] RB Grosbeaks, Siskins, David Kiehm demo
I guess this is the day for returning R-b Grosbeaks as they showed up at our house in Caroline Center this morning as well as everywhere else it seems. We are often a few days behind other locales when it comes to returning migrants so it seems like they showed up en mass last night/this morning. We also still have at least 4 Pine Siskins still around. On another note...for those who might be interested, wildlife artist David Kiehm (who has shown at the Lab of Ornithology in the past) will have a selection of his work, and will be doing a painting demonstration this Friday (May 1) at Handwork from 5-8 PM. Handwork is located on the corner of State and Cayuga Streets in Ithaca. [cayugabirds-l] Forster's Tern
I led one of the 2 SFO day trips to Montezuma today. We saw a nice variety of birds throughout the day, but the best sighting we had was a Forster's Tern at Mud Lock around noon. Everyone got good views of it both sitting and flying as initially it was sitting on a piece of wood less than than 30 ft from the road. A complete report of our other sightings will follow.
