I was lucky enough to have two sandhill cranes fly over (low and calling)
me this morning at the east end of Fairground Lane, Watkins Glen. They
were flying over the cattails on the west side of Catharine Creek.

About 20 minutes ago I saw a lone American Wigeon loafing on ice in Virgil
Creek just downstream of the Springhouse Rd bridge in Dryden. I don't
recall ever seeing waterfowl in that reach before though I expect wood
ducks.

I saw a beautiful adult northern Goshawk perched in a tree above an old
barn foundation half way up the north side of Yellow Barn Road this evening
at around 6:45.

3:45pm The SNOWY OWL was perched on the same post that I saw her(?) on last
week. While I was watching she flew and landed on a utility pole on the

I came home this afternoon and could see something struggling in the
poultry fence I have around my chicken coop. My first thought that a
chicken had gotten out and was trying to force its way back in but quickly
realized that it was a northern goshawk that was struggling in the fence.
I went

vocalizing like they were last night.
There were spectacular numbers of waterfowl in flight, in fields, and
in any open water throughout the Northern Montezuma Wildlife
Management Area. It was quite an evening!
