Listening to Nature’s Divas: what female songsters have to tell us

Most bird enthusiasts are familiar with the intricate, beautiful songs of male 
songbirds. However, it is less well known that females of many bird species 
also sing. While male songbirds sing to attract mates or defend territories, 
the reasons that females sing can be much broader, including competing for 
year-round resources for herself and her young. However, there is still a lot 
to learn about the extent of differences between male and female songs, the 
reasons that female songbirds sing, and the evolutionary pressures that led 
female songbirds to sing in the first place. Dr. Karan Odom will provide a 
glimpse of the world’s diversity of female bird songs and explain what these 
natural divas have to tell us.

About the Speaker: Dr. Karan Odom is a behavioral ecologist interested in how 
animals evolved their often complex behaviors. She is especially interested in 
the evolution of elaborate bird songs in female as well as male songbirds. She 
combines phylogenetic comparative methods with field studies in order to tease 
apart the evolutionary processes responsible for the biogeographical patterns 
we see in female and male song today. Karan is currently a postdoctoral 
researcher at the University of Maryland, College Park, and recently completed 
a postdoc at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Karan received her Ph.D. at the 
University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) studying male and female song 
in troupials, a tropical oriole in Puerto Rico, and her masters at the 
University of Windsor in Ontario studying the function and geographic variation 
in Barred Owl duets. Karan also runs a citizen science project (the Female Bird 
Song Project – www.femalebirdsong.org), encouraging wildlife enthusiasts to 
help document the understudied singing behaviors of female songbirds.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club meeting tonight

Hi All,

A quick reminder that there is a Club meeting this evening at 7:30pm in the 
auditorium at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.  After a bit of business, we’ll 
hear from Dr. Anastasia Dalziell about her fascinating research on 
vocalizations of Superb Lyrebirds.

Since the Club’s last meeting, there has been a lot of communication between 
the Club and the City of Ithaca with respect to broad ideas for enhancing 
Stewart Park as a must-visit destination for birds and birders.  The meeting 
tonight will be the first official opportunity for me to share some of the 
things being discussed and to provide opportunities for Club members to get 
involved (see my President’s column in the March newsletter for heads-up 
opportunities).

For now, let me just say that the City is committed to making Stewart Park not 
only a fun destination for local residents, but a place that is particularly 
bird- and birder-friendly.  Rick Manning and others from the City will be 
speaking at our May meeting and will be seeking ideas at that time from the 
Club about a broad management planning effort focused on Stewart Park.

Please come to the Club meeting tonight for a bit more information.  Here are 
some highlights.


  *
Restoration of the stone overlook at the Fuertes Bird Sanctuary (“Swan Pen”).
  *
Focus on native plants and habitat restoration for birds and other wildlife, 
which may include removal of non-native, invasive species.
  *
Development of a schedule of regular public bird walks at the Park.
  *
Development of a plan for on-site nature-based educational opportunities.
  *
Development and implementation of a comprehensive goose-management plan for the 
southern end of Cayuga Lake, including opportunities for Club members to help 
with population estimates, nest searches, and other data gathering activities.

BIrds.

The first bird club meeting of the season will be tonight at 7:30 at the 
Lab of Ornithology. There are two main items of business:


1. We have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming NYSOA meeting 
starting on the 19th. We will describe the activities that have been 
planned and will be asking for volunteers to help with various tasks.


2. We will present candidates for the elections to be held in October.

These meetings are open to everyone. Please come join us!

Speaker:  Nick Mason, PhD Student, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary 
Biology, Cornell University
Title: Complex colors and simple songs? Exploring evolutionary relationships 
between plumage, vocalizations and habitat in tanagers (Thraupidae)

Tanagers are renowned for their bright, colorful plumage but are regarded by 
most field guides as 'poor songsters'. The idea of an evolutionary 'trade-off' 
between song and plumage dates to the days of Darwin, however, empirical 
evidence for this trend remains scarce. In this talk, PhD student Nick Mason 
will discuss his master's thesis on the newly redefined tanagers with respect 
to the relationship between song and plumage elaboration and the habitats in 
which they are expressed.

The Cayuga Bird Club is pleased to welcome Lang Elliott as guest speaker at our 
monthly meeting on Monday, February 14 at 7:30 pm at the Cornell Lab of 
Ornithology [remember cookies & conversation at 7:15].  Through his 
presentation, "Explorations in Sound and Video", Lang will provide a unique 
overview of nature sound recording as "art", discuss different ways to listen 
to nature, and summarize his recent work with digital cinematography of singing 
birds.
