Hundreds of Snow and Canada geese with a group of Tundra Swans at
Knox-Marsellus marsh yesterday. Another birdwatcher also claimed she saw a
Meadowlark in the field by the road but I did not see it.

[cayugabirds-l] snow geese...?

After an enjoyable counting of bald eagles at Onondaga Lake this morning I 
drove across to Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. On Rt. 31 mucklands there were large 
numbers of snow geese on the south side of the road as well as many more 
landing further north but out of sight range. At Carncross Rd. there were many 
Canada geese and some ducks on the front waters, but many snow geese were 
behind them on other open water stretches. Hopefully they will be in closer 
viewing range in the coming days. Colleen Richards

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese at the north end of Cayuga Lake

Today (Wednesday), after spending the morning on our south facing deck watching 
loads of Canada and snow geese fly over,  Ton and I drove around Cayuga lake. 
On the northwest side, at the south end of the ice (which is south of Cayuga 
Lake State Park, where Lake Rd. rejoins 89) we found two huge flocks of snow 
geese in the water and on the ice,  as well as a really big mixed raft of 
ducks.  Mostly redheads, but also lots of scaup and smaller numbers of black 
ducks, ring-necked ducks, wigeon, gadwall, pintails, canvasbacks, hooded 
mergansers, red-breasted mergansers, bufflehead, mallards, swans, black-backed 
gulls, a bald eagle (which got the snow geese up into the air)..it was 
really amazing! We could pull off on Lake Road just before it rejoins 89 and 
had great views - with and without a scope.  They will probably be there 
tomorrow as well.  Highly recommended!

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese over Unions Springs, NY ... tens of thousands

For 1/2 hr. now, almost non-stop, we've been watching huge skeins of 
snow geese up high, coming from the SW & going NE. In all my yrs. here I 
have never had this many "at one time", so to speak. Where are they 
coming from? Where are they going at 8:40-9:15 a.m.?


Thirty yrs. ago we used to see humongous flocks of Canadas but with 
changes in corn harvesting techniques & fewer grain fields, we no longer 
see those numbers. Now it's snow geese.

Just had a flock of about 100 snow geese go overhead coming from south or south 
west-ish, heading northeast.

On Sunday, saw a raft of hundreds of white birds on the lake, out in the 
middle, from Rt. 89 in East Varick. Pretty sure they were snow geese but it was 
very far for me with my limited skills to be sure. Does it make sense?

Slow to report it, but had a Carolina wren flitting around in one of my horse 
run-ins on 12/8/2020 and on 12/10/2020 had a yellow-bellied woodpecker in black 
willow behind my house.

If anyone is out looking for snow geese right now (5pm Friday 3/6) I think a 
huge huge flock is landing in a corn field north of where 31/89 split, but 
before Savannah on the east side of the road. They left the muck flats as I was 
pulling into the potato barn spot.

I just returned from a good, birdy two weeks in Florida, & I couldn’t resist 
driving north to see all the Snow geese and I was not disappointed!

large, long  “island” of them nearer eastern shore Cayuga lake between Union 
Springs and Cayuga. 1000s on water with 1000s flying  in & landing on water.

I saw several very large flocks of Snow Geese on CR 4 between Geneva and 
Canadaigua today.  This afternoon a flock of at least 150 thousand was on the 
corner of Gates Rd and CR 4.  As a biologist who studies passerine migration, I 
find Snow Geese migration to be an awe inspiring spectacle.  Simply amazing.  I 
can’t imagine what these flocks look like as they converge onto their breeding 
grounds.

I had the supreme pleasure of having 100,000+ snow geese to myself tonight! I 
found them on Route 31 between the town of Montezuma and where 31 turns north 
and joins up with Route 89 towards Savannah. They were on the north side of 31 
in the muck flats. If you’re familiar with the area, the best viewing was from 
the pull off where the “potato barn” stood until last year. I expect they’ll 
bounce between the Knox Marsellus Marsh (East Rd) and this spot at the 31 muck 
flats. They won’t stick around more than 10-14 days, so come see them before 
they continue on northward.

This morning I saw up to 10,000 snow geese in the air in the Seneca 
Falls/Waterloo area. All headed south-ish, probably to go to the lake. I 
haven't seen any on the ground in the Montezuma area yet, but we will keep our 
social media updated!

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese at the muck

About 6:15 p.m., 28 Mar. 2019, daughter Becky & I were parked at Rtes. 
31 & 89 when great flocks of snow geese began arriving from the north.  
For 45 min. we watched as thousands of snows just kept coming, probably 
heading to Cayuga Lake.  Where in the world had they been all day??? The 
last ones seemed to be struggling in the stiff winds.


We saw hunters well hidden in the bushes & trees on the south side of 
the muck & heard gunshots.


On the muck, in the fading light, we saw 12 swans,  a few Canadas & 
other ducks among many mallards & the great nos. of pintail ducks.


Our actual aim was to look for ospreys as we traveled from one place to 
another & we did find some on the nests. OOB but the nest on the relay 
tower in downtown Geneva had a bird on the nest! Many nest platforms are 
almost totally devoid of  sticks. Especially noticeable was the old 
power tower at Mud Lock that is all but bare. We found eagles in the air 
or on their several nests, including the one across the Seneca River 
outlet at Mud Lock.


Tschache pool appears to have been drawn down to dry out. May's pool has 
more open space than in a couple yrs.. Here's hoping for good feeding 
areas for shore birds coming.


Becky noticed the TVs perched on a couple power poles along 5 & 20, 
apparently their roosting spots for the night, & commented that "they 
had no antennas."

Knox-Marsellus Marsh had 10,000+ Snow Geese this afternoon, and the
Mucklands hosted another flock of perhaps 6,000. EURASIAN WIGEON were
present both at Knox-Marsellus and Morgan Road in Savannah. The best bird
of the day was a EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL with the Green-winged Teal
flock at Morgan Road:

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese and Red wings

This morning I observed 20-30 SNOW GEESE flying north over Geneva. We are all 
eagerly awaiting their mass arrival, and we've been getting calls the last week 
or so at the Audubon Center from folks anxious to see them! For updates on 
their arrival and activity in the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, please follow us 
on Facebook and Instagram at Montezuma Audubon Center, and 
@Montezuma_Audubon_Center (respectively).

My FOY red-winged blackbird was at our feeders at the MAC on 3/2/19, and 
they've been regularly showing up since. Pulling into work this morning...the 
marsh was starting to sound like it was coming back to life :) Oh-grah-LEEE!

Thanks for the report, Tom.  It’s true, no Snow Geese were reported on 1 
January within the Ithaca Christmas Count circle, nor so far as I know during 
the Count Week (3 days prior & 3 days after, which was 29 Dec 2018 - 4 Jan 
2019), so it looks like we missed them. 

A map of the Ithaca Christmas Bird Count can be found on the Cayuga Bird Club 
website. The 15-mile diameter circle is centered atop Mt Pleasant. Its northern 
extent covers parts of Pleasant Valley Rd in the Town of Groton. The count 
circle extends far enough north to include the Ithaca Yacht Club and more along 
the southwest shore of Cayuga Lake but not quite to Myers Point along the 
northeast shore of the lake. To the west the count circle includes part of 
Sheffield Rd on the Ithaca/Enfield town line. To the east it includes most of 
the Village of Dryden. To the south it barely includes the hamlet of Danby, and 
also includes Belle School Rd. I believe there is a more precise map somewhere 
which allows zooming in to determine exact boundaries. 

Any reports for those dates within the count circle would be most welcome 
regarding Snow Geese as well as lots of other species we missed. We are envious 
of the reports of those gorgeous birds from farther north! 

Meanwhile reports are also welcome anytime regarding new species for 2019 in 
the Cayuga Lake Basin (generally, lake drainage plus south-draining lands north 
of the Seneca River/Erie Canal), or reports of rarities anywhere near the 
basin, or just plain exciting bird finds or phenomena. 

Although we missed Snow Geese in the southern part of the Cayuga Lake Basin, 
there is a huge raft of them in the middle of Cayuga Lake in its widest part 
near Aurora. From NYS-89 on Thursday afternoon it was opposite the Beer Garden 
by Poplar Beach Rd. It looks like a white island, often with a mist cloud of 
white birds over it. Those geese typically commute to feed in farm fields in 
the northern part of the Cayuga Lake basin.

Lansing Station Rd.
Also 1000s Canada Geese in loose flocks swimming & flying & various ducks , 
including 5 Red Breasted Mergs reported by Sarah Blodgett in her cove.

Most Snow Geese flew away, but one small raft remains to north of 600#s houses.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese Monday over Union Springs

About 12:30 p.m. today (19th) on our way to MNWR, (vistor's center was open)
 daughter, Becky Sewell, & I saw tens of thousands of Snows

mid-lake out from Canoga Shores (N. of Canoga) & opposite the Kozy Cove
area north of Union Springs. There were several tremendously HUGE rafts
spread over a long & wide distance.

I live 1/2 mi. east of the lake.  About 5 p.m. I was working outside for
a couple hrs.. Suddenly, overhead, gossiping, arguing, noisy snow geese
began to come by the hundreds from NW, heading SE right over my head &
spread also to the north & south of me.  It took at least 1/2 hr. for
the massive numbers to end. It's an amazing sight to see.

We saw the eagles at Mud Lock. Female is incubating & male was on watch.
We also had a low flying juvenile bald eagle just north of Cayuga. The
Eurasian wigeon was still at the Visitor's Center along with the
Snow/Canada cross goose. A Northern harrier was hunting over the marsh.

Two other large rafts further south. Interesting that very little was on
Seneca as we birded the west side and park at the North end. All the
usual hot spots were devoid of waterfowl.

I could not guess the number of geese out today off of Cayuga State Park,
as the gigantic rafts spread as far as I could see up and down the lake.
When I reported "tens of thousands" of geese, I would have said a million,
but for fear of exaggeration. Their collective noise at rest is impressive.

Eyes to the sky-the migration is on! The osprey will arrive starting March
29 +/-.

Large mixed flicks of blackbirds have been flying north over Hunt Hill Rd., 
Dryden, since this morning and just in the last hour flocks of snow and Canada 
geese as well. Also a bluebird checking out our boxes and a pair of ravens.

Just returned from a waterfowl count in the Montezuma Complex. Several thousand 
Snow Geese in the Rt 31 Mucklands. Much of the ponds/wetlands are still frozen 
(in general about 80% ice cover). Nevertheless, Northern Pintails, American 
Wigeon were there by the hundreds as well as a few GW Teal, Gadwall, Wood 
Ducks, Mallards and Black Ducks, and at least one Northern Shoveler. And quite 
a few Red-winged Blackbirds filtering in.

Just returned from a waterfowl count in the Montezuma Complex. Several thousand 
Snow Geese in the Rt 31 Mucklands. Much of the ponds/wetlands are still frozen 
(in general about 80% ice cover). Nevertheless, Northern Pintails, American

building (Montezuma).

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese at the muck

[John and Fritzie Blizzard]

Saw 5 snow geese close to the road just east of the potato building 
along Rte. 31 Mon. about 5:45 p.m.. Sky was already getting dark before 
the storm so I couldn't see much other than dozens of gulls.


At Mud Lock I saw one bald eagle in the tree near the new nest & an 
osprey on the nest atop the old elec. platform. Another osprey landed on 
the power line with something that he wasn't able to get off the talons 
of his left foot. When the storm hit, he flew off towards the woods 
across from the lock.


Then the storm hit & a man with 3 fishing poles in the water & one in 
his hand, just threw a blanket over his head & body & continued to fish. 
I don't quite know how to label such (?) dedication (?).


I made my way rather slowly in the pouring rain to Union Springs with 
flashers on from Cayuga.

Today I drove from Ithaca to Montezuma NWR & back on the west side of Cayuga 
Lake. Notable Snow Goose sightings included: 

Around 11am flocks of hundreds in lines and vees over Covert flying east toward 
the lake. 

Around 5pm hundreds covering and grazing on the sheep pasture beside NYS-89 
between Schuyler Creek and the Varick-Fayette Townline Road. They were nibbling 
grass, not rooting in corn. 

Quite a few moderate-size rafts on Cayuga Lake fairly close to the west shore 
as I drove south in the evening. I did not notice the single giant raft in the 
middle of the lake which I consider typical.

I also recall that on 25 February, when Gary, Ann, & I went to Oswego to see 
the Clark's Grebe, we saw thousands of Snow Geese migrating north to, then 
northeast around Lake Ontario. I assume this was the exit of a big portion of 
the Cayuga Basin's first big wave of Snow Geese. I think we may have a 
different and smaller group now from a more recent wave.

Hard to tell for sure, but it looks like some Snow Geese that flew west a hour 
or more ago, are returning to & landing in the large flock that remains on the 
lake.
This flock took flight a few times, flew a little to north, & landed again each 
time, so now they are in lake, west of, right across from, my abode at 535 
Lans. Stat. Rd.

We had numerous small flocks fly over our house this morning.  Probably 20+ 
flocks of 50-100 birds, coming from the direction of Cayuga Lake and flying 
southwest.  Not sure where they were headed.

This evening about 5:30pm there was an enormous flock of snow geese on the 
ground in fields east of Co Rd 129 between Wycoff and Munson Rds in Ovid.   I 
would guess 20-30 acres (and perhaps more) just covered with snow geese.

Yesterday I saw 4 blue SNOW GEESE looking for food in field at corner of 
Lansing Station Rd & Rt 34B, along with large flock (30 or so) of SNOW BUNTINGS 
with a few HORNED LARKS. First Snow Buntings for me this winter (not for lack 
of trying to find some!)

I have gone through a whole bag of bird seed this week feeding hundreds of 
birds at home.

On another note, has anyone seen the Gyrfalcon of late?

I've been down there about 12 times and have not seen it. I've found 
EVERYTHING but!! I found the fountain of youth, the lost city of 
Coronado, the lost Inca gold, even the Holy Grail.  But alas, no falcon

Enjoy the sunshine all. It's REAL medicine.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese and other lake birds

We checked a few spots around the lake today, and there was a huge raft of 
Snow Geese in the center of the lake, between Aurora and Dean's Cove. Other 
highlights included a nice aythya flock off the boat ramp at Cayuga Lake 
State Park with geese and Common Mergansers mixed in. At least 10 mostly 
young Bald Eagles were sprinkled along the ice edge. There were lots of 
Tundra Swans just south of Mud Lock with some ducks, but we didn't scope 
them. On the Factory Pond in Union Springs, we found 3 male Northern 
Shovelers and a pair of Green-winged Teals.


Speaking of eagles, on Friday I saw an adult and a young Bald Eagle perched 
on a branch near the white lighthouse jetty from Hog Hole. The adult would 
sometimes harass the young eagle. At one point the young eagle flew in a 
low circle toward the shore and back, flushing up ducks as it went but not 
seeming to make a play for any of them. It may have been looking for fish 
instead. I theorized that the adult was a parent trying to get the kid to 
hunt for itself.

There is a huge flock of snow geese directly east of Cayuga Lake State Park 
right now. The raft extends very far to the south as well. Also, lots of 
Goldeneye, swans and a large redhead raft (also to the south of the park). Very 
impressive!  No wind. 
   Now, off to seek the gyrfalcon.

At 8 am this morning, there were several thousand snow geese flying over 
and browsing in stubble in the northwest corner of Covert & 
south-central portion of the town of Ovid. All the flying geese were 
headed south, some funneling into the fields and the rest only 
moderately high up, looking like they more likely were headed for 
breakfast locally than a trip to Pennsylvania. Alicia

While heading to Montezuma on an errand today, I saw eight Snow Geese on a spit 
while driving into Aurora. looks like they arrived ahead of the thousands that

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese and a magical moment in the sun

Today, I found myself very fortunate to be looking up just as a glorious
flock of Snow Geese flying high, so high I could not hear them, and flying
southbound.  Hundreds of geese glistened and sparkled like jewels in the
bright sun.  I savored this sight for less than two minutes, until their
angle of reflection changed.  About 200-300 individuals danced through the
sky in a loose but connected formation of V's and v's which rippled about
but stayed connected.  It was nothing less than spectacular!  Seen from
Cascadilla Gorge, Fall Creek this morning around 8:30AM.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese and other high lights from West Side of Lake

Yesterday, I took a friend up the west side of the lake and had the
following highlights.

At Newman Golf Course
--in the Inlet: about 6 Pintails
--Redwing Blackbirds in the shrubs on the shore
--6 GW Teal in the middle of the Golf Course among cattail/puddle (5 male,
one femal)
--Great-horned owl sitting in her nest with a moving white fluffy round
object poking out
(I think she is the one who hunts the sewer rats near my house in Fall
Creek.  Yes, Fall Creek has rats.  Also, I found a wing and duck torso
skeleton nearby and wonder who at it.  I will post the picture on Facebook
CBC.)

Driving down the hill from Upper Taughannok, we saw a tremendous huge raft
of bobbing balls of white, which I guessed was Snow Geese, perhaps hundreds
of thousands of them spanning from somewhere between the salt mine to
Sheldrake Point.  So we estimated the line formation which was changing
from blob to line formation extending about 2/3 of the distance from the
west side to the east side of the lake.  We tried to get closer at Barton
Camp but still could not identify them.  By the time we got to Sheldrake,
the mass was gone.  However, there was a smaller flotilla of about several
thousand down one of the beach roads (right after a red barn when heading
north).  We got to within 25 yards and could see about 10 Blue Geese (my
first!).  After about fifteen minutes and a few outbursts of gaggling, they
all stated to drift out to the middle of the lake, then they started to
all face north EVERY ONE OF THEM, then they formed a line and pushed into
one another while all reorienting themselves east, EVERY ONE of them facing
east.  this orienting took about four minutes and all of this was video
taped.  Then it was as if someone shot the start gun, and one by one in a
flash, they all took flight in the most orderly manner.  I was in awe and
yelling out what I was watching.  I could not believe it.  Has anyone ever
seen this behavior before?  Perhaps this is common, but I had no idea that
there was this kind of communication going on in the water.  I know they
take turns in the air with taking the lead, but this was remarkable.

THEN, I noticed about 100 yards south, where an equally large flotilla of
CANADIAN GEESE

I was awake around 330 am. I heard a large flock of snow geese fly over my 
house at 3.39 am. It passed over my house over a minute..

Last Wednesday there were several hundred Snow Geese in the cut-over corn field 
along Rt 31. North side of the road. West of the Potato Building. The field was 
still snow-covered and frozen, but I would expect there to be many more geese 
there by this weekend.

Just watched four Vs of Snow Geese overhead heading toward Ithaca,
beautiful against the blue sky. I thought I spotted a very small goose in
one of the flocks, but after getting the binocs, it turned out to be a blue
phase whose darker wings blended in with the sky. All the rest of the geese
were white.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese. Sodus Bay Snowy owl

Dominic Sherony and I had a huge mass of Snow Geese along the west side
of Seybolt Road south of the airport in Seneca falls this afternoon. I
counted several flocks joining those in the field by 20's and got 5000. They
made no difference in the appearance of the flock when they landed. Easily
100M. they all flew toward the lake at around 3 pm when hunters shots went
off in the woods. The Peregrine Falcon hunting Starlings at the nearby farm
was a nice addition when he/she decided to fly through the goose masses.

A Snowy owl reported at Sodus point yesterday was still there this
evening at the tip of the east pier.

Only 32 Sandhill cranes standing on the ice at Knox-Marcellus marsh on

[cayugabirds-l] snow geese over Interlaken

This morning, about 8am, I thought I faintly heard snow geese.  I looked up and 
at first didn't see them, but then did see two very large flocks, quite high.  
I would estimate 3-400 geese heading south.

As I returned home after a long drive from Maryland this afternoon, I was also 
greeted by a small flock of SNOW GEESE over my house — just before the snow 
started to fall…..

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese

Between 5:00 and 6:00, I saw flight after flight of Snow Geese.  I'm half way 
between Skaneateles and Auburn.  They were mostly going east toward 
Skaneateles.  They seemed to taking off from farm fields near me.
