[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club field trip to Franklin Mountain Hawkwatch

2023-11-09 Thread Wes Blauvelt
The Franklin Mountain Hawkwatch, sponsored by the Delaware-Otsego Audubon
Society, has been an active raptor survey site for 30+ years. Located at
the DOAS sanctuary overlooking Oneonta and the Susquehanna River valley, it
is about a 2 hour drive from Ithaca.

Those wishing to participate in this trip will assemble at the East Hill
Plaza on Pine Tree Road at 7:45 AM for an 8:00 AM departure. The trip will
take place on Saturday, November 12th. Forecasted Northwest winds are
predicted to create ideal conditions at the sanctuary as migrating raptors
use lift near the observation site. This can result in close views of the
migrating raptors. This week there has been a nice movement of Red-tailed
Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks and Golden Eagles.

Plan to spend the day in the open at 2000’ elevation. There is no shelter
at the sanctuary, so please dress accordingly. Bring a snack/lunch and
thermos with a warm beverage. There is a port-a-john at the site. We will
plan to start our return trip by 2:30 PM. If you are planning to attend,
please send me a note at wwblauv...@gmail.com.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip- West side of lake- waterfowl and winter raptors

2019-12-13 Thread Joshua Snodgrass
Hi all,
Just a reminder I will be leading an afternoon - sunset trip on Sunday,
December 15 on the west side of Cayuga Lake. We'll look for overwintering
waterfowl along the lake shore, grassland birds (snow buntings, etc.), and
try for Short-eared Owl and Snowy Owl at regular sites. Should be a fun
time! We expect to return by 6pm. Be sure to dress very warmly, it gets
very cold with the wind off the lake and in the fields.

Meet at Taughannock Falls State Park, North Point parking lot (lot just
north of the bridge over 89), at 1 pm for carpooling. Hope to see you
there! Josh Snodgrass

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club field trip up the lake on Saturday, Dec 7

2019-12-05 Thread Diane Morton
Ken Kemphues and I will be leading a full-day field trip around Cayuga Lake
this Saturday, December 7. We'll be focusing on wintering waterfowl, but
will also look for wintering field birds.

Snow is predicted for Friday, but Saturday looks like it will be partly
sunny, with temperatures in the 20's. Bundle up with extra layers for the
cold. Bring something to drink, snacks and/or lunch, binoculars, and a
spotting scope if you have one. We will also make a stop to purchase lunch
food.

Swans, Loons, and Grebes are out on the lake along with a variety of
wintering ducks. In the fields today we found a single Lapland Longspur
with several Horned Larks along Lake Road, and Snow Buntings in the King
Ferry area. No guarantees for these on Saturday, but we'll take a look.

Meet at the east end of Stewart Park at 8:00 am for carpooling. (Turn right
as you enter the park). We expect to return by 4:30 pm.

This trip is open to all. See you Saturday!

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip on Saturday

2019-11-17 Thread Paul Anderson
I was joined by 12 eager birders on this sunny but very chilly Saturday
morning. We started by going to Stewart Park to see what was on the water. On
the east side of the park we were treated to a nice collection of waterfowl,
with highlights including Wood Ducks, Ruddy Ducks, and a few Aythya including
Lesser Scaup, Redheads, and Ring-necked Ducks. It was hard to see much that was
far out on the water because of the extreme shimmer. The Swan Pen area was
lively with Passerines, including Goldfinch, House Finch, countersinging
Carolina Wrens, and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Here's the Ebird checklist:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S61487073.

We then went North, stopping first at Ladoga where we the best find was a pair
of Long-tailed Ducks, and a pair of White-winged Scoter. At Myer's, we found a
nice Lesser Black-backed Gull on the spit, but diversity was otherwise very
low: https://ebird.org/checklist/S61492343.

We headed towards the Aurora Boathouse, first stopping in King Ferry at the
coffee shop. As we descended into Aurora, we could see huge rafts of Snow Geese
far out on the lake. Just judging from the scale, there must have been tens of
thousands of birds in three large groups. At the boathouse itself, the wind had
picked up a bit to make it quite cold , and the shimmer again made it really
difficult to see far away birds, so we could only barely make out the distant
snow geese. In consolation we had a Bald Eagle soaring over the location where
they nest. https://ebird.org/checklist/S61492068.

Finally, we decided to make one last stop at Long Point on the way home. This
yielded a few loons, but not much else: https://ebird.org/checklist/S61491877.
The only other bird of note was a Pheasant that flew across the road on the way
back.

Despite the cold, the shimmer, and the low diversity, we all had a great day.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club field trip Saturday the 28th

2019-09-25 Thread Jody Enck
Hi everyone,

I am leading a half-day field trip this coming Saturday morning. Meet in
the parking lot at the Lab of Ornithology at 7:30 am. We'll start at the
Genung Preserve in Freeville -- its one of the properties of the Finger
Lakes Land Trust. Then we'll head over to Hile School Road. We'll likely
finish the morning at the Herman Road wetlands just outside of Freeville.

There is a chance of showers Saturday morning, but it looks like the bulk
of the rain will hold off until afternoon. Nonetheless, be prepared for
some Ithacation from the sky. It also will be warm. So, bug spray might
come in handy. Bring some water to stay hydrated.

The trails at the Genung Preserve are rather flat, but the vegetation is
not mowed, so we'll be wading through some Goldenrod and similar plants.
At Hile School Road, we'll be along the dirt road. If we have time, we'll
stop by Herman Road (or Cady Road, if Herman is too busy due to the Rt 38
detour). More walking along the road there.

See you Saturday!

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip-Saturday 9/21

2019-09-18 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,
I'll be leading a Cayuga Bird Club field trip this coming Saturday, 9/21.
We'll meet at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at 7:30 am and finish up by noon
at the latest. Migration is well underway and there are mixed flocks of
migrants around which I hope to find. My plan is to walk along the Dryden Rail
Trail starting in Freeville and heading east toward George Road. There are
many different habitats along the way, from field to swamp to woods, which
should be good for a variety of birds. If time permit, we may then head to
Dryden Lake to round out the morning.
The trail is somewhat stony, so wear good shoes, bring a snack and prepare
for a nice stroll.
The trip is open to the public.
See you Saturday!

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip to the Park Preserve tomorrow

2018-05-05 Thread Paul Anderson
A fine time was had this morning on this field trip. We met at the CLO
parking lot, and while waiting there we were treated to a nice view of a
Common Raven being harassed by crows and blackbirds. It landed on one of
the utility poles and croaked its displeasure.

On the way to the preserve we spotted a Red-tailed Hawk on the ground in
a field on Freese Road, where it was being mobbed too. At the same point
one of our party observed a Bobolink and a flyover Pileated Woodpecker.

At the preserve we started at the SW entrance and did the loop down to
the creek including the ravine. Our first observation was of singing
Towhees and a distant Prairie Warbler. Large numbers of American
Goldfinch were present near the entrance. A few Juncos kept making
appearances. Further in we heard and saw first Ruby-crowned Kinglets,
then some Golden-crowned. Several White-throated Sparrows were singing
lustily. An enthusiastic Ovenbird popped into sight and sang. A couple
of Field Sparrows sang too. Two Broad-winged Hawks flew over.

As we entered the woods leading down to the creek we heard
Black-throated Green, and probable Magnolia (we never got visuals). At
the creek we struck out on the Louisiana Waterthrush we had hoped to see.

We bumped into a couple of other birders who had seen a Black-throated
Blue and a Blackburnian, and heard a Winter Wren at the ravine. We did
not succeed in repeating their success, but were compensated by the
sight of a pair of Hermit Thrushes.

Back at the entrance we decided to go to the other parking area and do
the boardwalk. There we added Solitary Sandpiper, Chestnut-sided, Common
Yellowthroat, and a flyover Cooper's Hawk.

As a bonus, on the way back we bumped into John Fitzpatrick on Mt.
Pleasant Road who pointed out the location of Horned Larks. A lovely
male Harrier was there too. A bit further up we got out of the car when
we heard a Savannah Sparrow, and then got great scope views of a singing
male Bobolink at the very top of a tree.

Thanks to everyone who participated. It was well worth the effort.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club field trip to Finger Lakes National Forest

2018-05-05 Thread Joshua Snodgrass
Hi all,
Tomorrow, Sunday, May 6th, I will lead an all day field trip to the Finger
Lakes National Forest. We will meet at the parking lot at Teeter Pond on
Seneca Rd at 7:30am.
The Finger Lakes National Forest has a great variety of habitats, from
grasslands and grazing areas, to scrubland, wildlife ponds, mature
deciduous forests, transitional habitat, and hemlock filled ravines. Great
opportunity to see neotropical migrants, warblers, thrushes, vireos, as
well as breeding grassland birds. We will visit a selection of these
habitats, including several eBird hotspots.
This will be an all day trip in rustic habitat, with plans for a lunch
break. Some of the trails may be muddy, depending on weather, so dress
accordingly, and bring insect repellent. All are welcome, regardless of
experience. Come explore New York's only National Forest, and some great
habitat between Cayuga and Seneca Lakes!

Directions from Ithaca: Take Rt 96 north to Trumansburg, turn left on rte
227 after the post office, then turn right on Searsburg Rd. (county rt 1).
Follow Searsburg Rd. for 4-5 miles to Potomac Rd. and turn right. Head
north until you hit a T intersection with Seneca Rd. Turn left at the T and
Teeter Pond will be on the left after a 1/2 mile or so.
If coming from the north or west, I recommend traveling from 414 to
Searsburg Rd to Potomac Rd. to Seneca Rd. as some of the more direct roads
are pretty bad seasonally. There is an eBird hotspot for this location. For
easy access to map/directions visit https://ebird.org/hotspot/L940987
Please reach out to me with any questions. 570-362-2548 or respond to this
email off list.

Hope to see you there!
Best,
Josh

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip report 1-21-18: Snowy Owl, Snow Buntings, Horned Larks and more!

2018-01-21 Thread Diane Morton
Ken Kemphues and I led a group of 11 enthusiastic birders on a half day
trip along the east side of Cayuga Lake and venturing into the farm fields
of King Ferry. We started at Stewart Park, where the ice still extends far
out so that views of birds on the lake were pretty distant. We had better
viewing from East Shore Park, where all of us were able to see LONG-TAILED
DUCKS, WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, and a raft of Aythya, which included both
GREATER and LESSER SCAUP, and a few CANVASBACK with the many REDHEADs.
COMMON GOLDENEYE and COMMON MERGANSERs were easy to spot, and a couple of
RED_BREASTED MERGANSERs were seen. A small flock of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were
in a near tree, and Leigh and Wes spotted a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER there
just before the birds took flight.

At Ladoga we found more LONG-TAILED DUCKS, but not many other waterfowl
besides GOLDENEYE, CANADA GEESE and a single PIED-BILLED GREBE. A surprise
was finding an immature COOPER’S HAWK that perched for good scope views,
enabling us to see its yellow eye, banded tail and slightly mottled back.

We moved on to Myers Point, and while viewing the waterfowl there,
including RING-NECKED DUCKS, we noticed the gulls suddenly take to the sky.
When searching the sky for a possible raptor, Ken and Wes spotted a new
lump on the spit - a SNOWY OWL had landed there! All of us got great
views- very close! The owl was resting pretty peacefully, but AMERICAN
CROWs started coming to check it out. The owl tried threatening postures
against three crows, but they drove it into flight. I believe Paul Anderson
was able to get a video of the Owl during this interval. Seeing this Snowy
Owl was a thrilling bonus for the field trip! We even heard its cries as it
flew low over the water being pursued by crows.

We next headed toward Belltown Dairy via Davis Road, looking for Horned
Larks or Snow Buntings, but found neither. Continuing toward King Ferry, we
turned on Center Road and were rewarded with about 20 SNOW BUNTINGs and
40-50 HORNED LARKs, many of them at the edge of the road making for good
viewing. Luckily auto traffic was nonexistent, so we were all able to get
well-positioned for spending some time looking at the birds, even seeing
the differences between male and female Horned Larks. As we left we passed
another large flock of Snow Buntings further down the road.

We took a break at the Corner Store in King Ferry and then went on to
Aurora. One BALD EAGLE was perched in the tree with the eagle’s nest near
Poplar Ridge Road and Route 90. A NORTHERN FLICKER and RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER were active in the trees near the pullout. Further on, at the
Aurora Post Office parking area, we scoped the lake and added HORNED GREBEs
to our list.

We still had time to make it up to Union Springs to look through the ducks
on the North Mill Pond. Among the many REDHEADs were BUFFLEHEAD, GADWALL,
AMERICAN WIGEON, and a HOODED MERGANSER. MALLARDs were gathered near the
pond’s edge, and a couple of WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHes and a TUFTED
TITMOUSE flitted above us.

It was a great trip overall - good looks at the local winter birds in good
light - with a great group of people. We really enjoyed the day.

Saturday 4/29 from 7:30am until about noon. All are welcome, regardless
of experience or level of expertise.

Meet at the CLO parking lot to carpool to the preserve. Or, meet us at

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip 2-20-16

2016-02-20 Thread Diane Morton
Eight people joined Ken and me for a half-day field trip to look for birds
on the lake and in the fields of Lansing. It was a gorgeous day! So
different from our windy and freezing scouting day. Today the sky was blue,
the light was excellent, and temperature rose into the upper 50’s by the
end of the trip!

We started out at East Shore Park, where we mostly observed Common
Mergansers and Common Goldeneye. Looking across the lake, we saw that most
of the ducks were concentrated on the west side. We were glad that we had
asked permission from Elaina M. to bring the group to her property
overlooking the southwest corner of the lake. This is where thousands of
Aythya had spread out. The ducks glowed in the sunlight; in addition to
the huge numbers of Redheads, we saw many handsome Canvasbacks, lesser
numbers of both Greater and Lesser Scaup, and a few scattered Ring-necked
Ducks. Closer to shore we saw a single American Wigeon among the Mallards
and Black Ducks. John Confer spotted a distant male Long-tailed Duck, that
all of us were able to see between its diving disappearances. A young Bald
Eagle was at the ice edge. When it flew up, a wave of ducks rose off the
lake with a machine-like hum of flapping wings and swirled in the sky in
front of us. So many birds in the sky at once! But none of them resolved
into the Tufted Duck that was reported on the lake this week.

We next went to Myers Point, Salt Point and Ladoga. While the lake was not
too rough at Myers, there also weren’t many birds to see beyond the usual
gulls, Mallards and Common Mergansers. We could see a pair of White-winged
Scoters closer to Salt Point, and moved to that area for better viewing.
The scoters were actively diving, but everyone got excellent looks, as they
were fairly close in. The male’s white eye mark and bright orange bill
stood out sharply in the sunlight. John spotted a lovely male Wood Duck
here as well, which swam to shore and hunkered down among the Canada
Geese. Common Goldeneye were doing their head thrust displays. We also
saw a male Hooded Merganser. Over at Ladoga, we added American Coots and a
couple of Double-crested Cormorants to our list.

We drove out Lansingville Road to look for field birds—and found them! We
stopped for a small flock of Horned Larks, and then a larger flock of more
than 60 Snow Buntings flew up in the same general area. We scoped these
birds for a while, which unfortunately were not very close, but we found no
Longspurs.

On Fenner Road, we heard more Horned Larks, and spent some time trying to
get better views of a couple of sparrows that were hiding in the ditch.
Ken saw that one was a Savannah Sparrow, but no one else got a good view.
The other bird appeared to be a Song Sparrow.

On our way back along route 34B, we had a Rough-legged Hawk flying
overhead. This was a very enjoyable trip with a great group of people on a
beautiful day!

Just a reminder. This day (Sunday March 8) is ‘Spring forward day’, i.e change
in day light saving timing. So make sure you don’t show up an hour later. Of
course these days people use their cell phones, which will automatically show
the correct(ed) timing.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club field trip report Jan 24

2015-01-24 Thread Diane Morton
Thirteen people went out today for a half-day field trip. After a brief
stop to look for Peregrine Falcon at Bradfield Hall, with no luck, we
headed down to East Shore Park. Here we saw a variety of waterfowl, though
not in the huge numbers that have recently been seen. We had good looks at
Common Mergansers and Lesser Scaup close in, and Canvasbacks among the
Redheads. This turned out to be a good spot for identifying both females
and males of these waterfowl. Common Goldeneye were out a little farther
and Paul also spotted a Common Loon.

We next headed up to Myers Point Marina, where we saw Gadwall, a female
Hooded Merganser, more Lesser Scaup and Black Duck in with the Mallards.
Susan spotted a beautiful Northern Pintail. Groups of Common Goldeneye not
far offshore were doing their head-throw displays which were a lot of fun
to watch. The water was very calm on this side of the point. Out at the
spit, it was much windier and cold, but there we saw a group of Tundra
Swans before they took off in flight. A raft of Redheads was visible North
of Salt Point, but too far away for us to pick through.

From Myers, we went out to Davis and Mahaney Roads looking for Horned Larks
and Snow Buntings, and were disappointed not to find any, even at Belltown
Dairy. As we continued to Center Road, Ken saw one Horned Lark; it perched
briefly on a corn stalk for us. We could hear a few others and saw two
more fly by, but wished that the flock had been larger, and that they had
stuck around long enough for everyone to see. After our rather
disappointing search for field birds, we went over to Algerine Road for
Wild Turkeys. At first, it looked like we had struck out here as well, but
there were 7 turkeys far in the back field.

This was the first birding field trip that Ken and I have led. We very much
enjoyed the company of everyone in the group!

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip this Sunday

2015-01-08 Thread bob mcguire
I will lead a trip up the lake Sunday. Meet at the Lab of O at 8 am. Plan to
return by mid-afternoon. Bring a lunch. All are welcome - bird club members and
the public.

Duck hunting ends Friday, and I noticed today that ducks are beginning to
congregate again at the south end of the lake. And, just in time, the
temperature will again approach freezing!

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip

2014-01-22 Thread wingmagic16
Hey All,

An invitation to join Bill Baker on Sunday for a half day field trip to where
ever the birds may be, or are thought to be. Meet at the Laboratory of
Ornithology parking lot at 8 AM. Bill is copied here, please contact him for
details if you need to.

All are welcome to join Bill regardless of membership status or level of
expertise. It is always a good idea to bring your scope if you have one in the
eventuality that water birding is involved

Please note that Sunday is predicted to be an extremely cold day, especially at
the start. Dress very, very warmly, more layers than you ever thought you
might need. Don't forget that birding involves much standing around and
looking.

As always, please check our website Cayugabirdclub.org, for the most up-to-date
information about events.

Hope you can make it.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip

2012-10-20 Thread Ann Mitchell
Nine birders joined me on 10/20 for a trip up the lake. The trip was
supposed to be until 1:00, but because no one had time restraints, we
decided to go all the way up the lake to Knox-Marcellus to see the Greater
White-fronted Geese that were seen there the day before. Besides laughing a
lot the highlights of the trip are as follows:

Stewart Park - 30 Ruddy Ducks, many Pied-billed Grebes, 100 Double-crested
Cormorants, Common Merganser, and one female King-fisher.

Myers Point - Both Greater and Lesser Scaup, one Ring-necked Duck, one
Hooded Merganser, a number of Common Mergansers, and one King-fisher.

Aurora Boathouse - 5+ Common Loons.

Union Springs Factory Pond - Yellow-rumped Warblers in the Poison Ivy. No
ducks.

Tow Path Road - 4 Greater White-fronted Geese, 20 Snow Geese, MANY Canada
Geese, 4 Trumpeter Swans, many Northern Pintail Ducks, Green-winged Teal.
There were a number of Dunlin, 9 Black-bellied Plovers, l Golden Plover, l
Stilt Sandpiper, l Greater Yellowlegs, and Long-billed Dowitchers, 19
Sandhill Cranes, which our group saw 9 or so. The Eaton Bird Club was also
there.

A number of people wanted to hopefully see the Rufous Hummingbird, so we
went down the west side of the lake to Marty and Mary Jane's house on
Powell Road in the town of Covert. Indeed, the bird was there, and
everyone had great looks at it. it was a life bird for many on the trip.
It was also a New York State and a Cayuga Lake Basin bird! Fun was had by
all. We arrived back in Ithaca around 2:00 p.m.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club field trip this weekend - meet at CLO, NOT at Stewart Park

2012-09-13 Thread Paul Anderson

All:

I am leading a field trip this Saturday. This had been scheduled to meet
at Stewart Park, but I just realized that the Aids ride for life is
starting from there at 7am. We will instead meet at the Lab of O parking
lot and proceed from there, leaving about 7:10 or so. From there the
plan is to go up the lake, returning by 4pm.

Huge apologies to anyone who is inconvenienced by this last-minute change.

Yes! In spite of all expectations, I've seen very few ticks yet this spring

I'm still expecting a big outbreak of ticks, any time now...

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip to Lindsay Parsons

2012-05-13 Thread Susan Danskin
On Sunday, I was joined for a glorious day of birding at Lindsay Parsons by Rob
Warfield, Klaus Apel, and Judy Thoroughman. I don't think we could have picked
a nicer day. There was none of the predicted rain and the temperature remained
perfect all day. An added bonus… not a single tick in sight!

Most of the birds we heard we were eventually able to see although some eluded
our sight. Unfortunately a few of also eluded identification.

On the west side of the tracks (blue trail from entrance to railroad bed),
Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Blue-winged, and Prairie Warblers; Common
Yellowthroats; Indigo Buntings; and Field Sparrows were common throughout their
appropriate habitats. Red-eyed and Blue-headed Vireos both gave us nice looks
as well as an almost constant serenade.

Along the boundary between shrub and field, we got decent looks at a Brown
Thrasher but did not hear it sing.

At the big pond, as we alternated between watching a Solitary Sandpiper and
scanning the pond, Rob noticed a mature Bald Eagle in a tree on the south side
of the pond. As Judy watched it fly away behind the trees to the west of the
pond, she came across a Belted Kingfisher perched on an limb.

Along what I think of as Warbler Way LP (as opposed to Warbler Way Howland
Island), we spotted a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird and watched as a male
chased her from her perch.

At the bridge just before the railroad tracks, we watched a pair of Eastern
Phoebe fly-catching and tail-flicking. I had a quick glimpse of a Hooded
Warbler but no one else got on it before it disappeared.

On the other other side of the tracks (left side of blue trail) we heard but
did not see Junco and Black White Warbler. At Celia's Cup we were stymied by
a song none of us could pinpoint with 100% certainty. To protect our honor, I
won't even mention all of the possibilities we ran through. Needless to say,
whatever species it was, it proved to be our nemesis.

On the other side of the tracks (red trail), some of us finally got a glimpse
of a Wood Thrush after listening to them sing all morning. Scarlet Tanagers
were singing from their hiding places at the tops of the now well-leafed out
trees and Ovenbirds were singing from their equally obscured locations lower in
the trees.

At the intersection of the red trail and the railroad bed, we watched three
not-so-Solitary Sandpipers in the barely-there pond and a Baltimore Oriole from
high in the trees.

Leaving he Preserve with time to spare, we decided not to trudge through the
forest on the slim hope of hearing and/or seeing a Worm-Eating Warbler.
Instead we headed over to the Fire House and had great looks at Eastern
Kingbird, American Redstart, and Magnolia Warbler.

On the way home we took a slight detour up a road I cannot name to listen for
Black-throated Green and then detoured again to the intersection of Sandbank
and King Roads to watch and listen to the aerial displays of Bobolink. Funny
how whenever they land, it seems to be just on the other side of the rise. We
did not hear any Grasshopper Sparrow while we were there.

Thanks to Rob, Klaus, and Judy for a great day of birding. If I missed
anything important in this report, I hope they will feel free to add to it.
Susan Danskin
