[cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count results

2024-01-03 Thread Paul Anderson
The results of the Christmas Bird Count are now available in this
spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/.../1orJOduCB4GKq7JlF0jJM.../edit...

.
Quick summary: We got 97 species on the day, and we have another 4 count
week species so far. We had 46680 individuals, way up from our 10-year
average of 35740. . Three species were seen for the first time: Trumpeter
Swan, Northern Parula, and Wilson's Warbler. We had record high counts for
16 species, and ties for another 5 species. There were no surprise misses.
The most "exotic" sighting was of a European Goldfinch seen at a feeder in
Dryden.
Of course, these numbers are subject to revision as we eliminate duplicates
and as more information trickles in.
Thanks to all the leaders, counters, and everyone who helped with the most
excellent compilation dinner last night for which we had about 60 people.

I’d say Tufted Duck and Black Vulture were significant rarities!

Thanks for your work, Paul.

Happy New Year to everyone!

As many of you already know, we had the compilation meeting on January 2nd.
Below is a summary of the results. Anyone who wants to see the full gory
details can look at the spreadsheet at

Caveat: we're still working on this, so some of the numbers will change, mostly
those that involve birds seen on the lake.

161 people spent 360 hours covering about 600 miles of ground.

97 species on the day. So far there are these count week species: Ross's Goose,
Wood Duck, Fish Crow. There were no significant rarities.

High counts: Gadwall, Wigeon, Lesser Scaup, Ruddy Duck, Common Loon, Red-necked
Grebe, Black Vulture, Turkey Vulture, Cooper's Hawk, Bald Eagle, Lesser
Black-backed Gull, Peregrine Falcon, Common Raven, Hermit Thrush.

No record low counts, although the House Sparrow count was almost there.

41,181 individual birds.

Thanks to everyone who helped, especially the area leaders, Stephanie, and
Matt. Also thanks to Kevin and Jay for furnishing photos used in the
presentation.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count results

2022-01-05 Thread Karen
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the wonderful job. I compiled the count for several years. Linda
and I entered the back data and we compiled a gaph of the changing abundance.
Kevin compiled for a number of years and merged his and Jay's photos with each
species. You showed the history of the numbers for each species and tabulated
species with count highs and lows. Each technique is great, and a choice that
the compiler gets to make. Thanks for getting all this together. It is a lot of
work

[cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count compilation gathering!

2021-12-29 Thread Colleen Richards
Get ready to “participate” in Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count
on New Year's Day! This is Audubon’s 122nd Christmas Bird Count and our
club’s 60th consecutive year of participation. We will start the new year
off by counting all the birds we can find within our 15-mile Ithaca count
circle on Saturday, January 1, 2022.

And everyone can participate in our compilation gathering! This will be virtual
again this year and will be held on Monday, January 3, starting at 7:30pm. Paul
Anderson will again serve as our count compiler this year. The counts will be
tabulated and presented, and there will be an opportunity for everyone to share
their highlights (or lowlights), and just chat in general. Register now for
this Zoom meeting at https://tinyurl.com/ithacacbc2022

[cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count results

2021-01-03 Thread Paul Anderson
All:

I've been tallying the numbers from the Christmas Bird Count that was held
on New Year's Day. We're going to unveil the numbers at the Zoom meeting on
Monday. Until then, here is a teaser.

   - *181 people participated*, breaking the previous record of 165 from
   2017
   - Participants walked *315 miles* in 305 hours, and spent another *94 *hours
birding from the car, and *21 *owling
   - We had *88 species* on the day, and at this point have 4 count week
species, one of which is new for the count
   - *15 species had record highs*, and two tied the previous record high.
We've never broken so many records before!
   - *No record lows or big misses*, although a few species were much lower
than we have been used to in recent years

Please join us for the Zoom call on Monday at 7:30 for a presentation of
the details. Register with this link: https://tinyurl.com/cbc-2021-01-cbc.
Please note that we already have 60 people signed up, and our maximum
capacity is 100, so sign up soon!

Thanks,

-Paul

[cayugabirds-l] Christmas bird count final spreadsheet

2019-02-02 Thread Paul Anderson
I finally finished the count spreadsheet. For those that are interested,
it can be found here:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=19G1vyet0UhwZi4mjdNIN5s_X237NgI-r.
(Note that Google Sheets doesn't render things perfectly; some of the
conditional formatting is not the same as when you look at it with Excel.)

On examination, the Bald Eagle numbers didn't hold up, so we ended up
with 11, tying the record high count from last year.

On the other hand, the Turkey Vulture total was wrong and after
correction upwards to 63, this breaks the previous high count of 59 from
2016.

Enjoy!

[cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count Jan 1st 2019 - Counters urgently needed for Area III

2018-12-28 Thread Marie P. Read
Hello Cayugabirders,

The local Christmas Bird Count is coming up: January 1st 2019. I am Area
Coordinator for Area III which includes much of Dryden including Hammond Hill
and Yellow Barn Forests and I need a few more counters to have complete
coverage of the area. I currently have no-one covering the Village of Dryden
and environs, so I'd be delighted to have some help.

There are two main areas to cover:
1. The southern side of Dryden, including the village south of Rt 13, Kimberley
Drive, Keith Lane, plus lower Beam Hill Road and other roads on the west of Rt
38. Note that the area includes only the very western tip of Dryden Lake but
does NOT include the section of the Dryden Lake Trail ("Jim Schug trail")
southward along the lake. However it DOES include the section of the Jim Schug
Trail that starts at Keith Lane and goes northward toward the village. This
trail is likely to be snow-free and is a great spot for American Tree Sparrows
and other species.

2. The northern side of Dryden, including the village north of Rt 13, George
Rd, Schoolhouse Road, and roads northward to Fall Creek Rd in Freeville. A bit
more driving than walking in this route but good for open country birds,
waterfowl, raptors.

If you want to join in the fun, please let me know ASAP so I can add you to the
roster and give you more details.

Thanks
And Happy New Year Birding!

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count Jan 1st, counters STILL needed for Area III.

2017-12-30 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi Cayugabirders,

I've posted this before, but I STILL need a few counters for Area III, so
please reply if you'd like to help out.

I'm area coordinator for Area III which includes the Village of Dryden, Hammond
Hill, Yellow Barn State Forest and areas south to Slaterville. I have several
areas for which I still need birders to count. If you'd like to participate
please contact me directly m...@cornell.edu for further details

The areas not yet covered are:

Irish Settlement Road - lots of open space adjacent to and including the Park
Preserve and Hammond Hill. Several houses with feeders along the road, as well
as spots frequented by Northern Shrike in the recent past.

South side of the Village of Dryden, including Ferguson Road (a suburban area
but likely to have several feeders with birds) and as much of Yellow Barn Road
as you care to cover (starts out suburban but then heads through forest with
the possibility of Common Raven and/or winter finches)

Ringwood Road from Midline Rd to Rt 13 - a variety of wooded habitats and
several feeders along this stretch.

Please consider joining in the fun. It's a great way to start the new year!

[cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count - Area III volunteers needed

2015-12-21 Thread Marie P. Read
Hello Cayugabirders,

I'm putting out an appeal for volunteers to help count birds in Area III of the
upcoming 116th Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count, which takes place in and
around Ithaca on January 1st 2016.

Area III includes the village of Dryden, and good birding spots in the town of
Dryden such as Hammond and Yellow Barn state forests, the Park Preserve, etc. A
couple of my regular counters can't make it this year, so I'm in need of help
to cover this very large area.

If you are available on New Year's Day and would like to join in this wonderful
tradition please drop me an email m...@cornell.edu or call 607-539-6608

Birders of all experience levels are welcome. Bird all day, or just a short
time...it's up to you.

Thanks, and Happy Holidays to all!

The saturday We all saw 3-5 SE Owls at Buck & Scofield rds, I saw horned larks
on the part of Buck just inside section 9. I will go look for them again when
the sun comes up. (After owling).

Saw 40-50 of what I think were swans flying south over Lans Station rd near
dusk tonight. No binocs & i am
Not good on their calls, so don't know if tundra or trumpeter. I ruled out
Sandhill Cranes on basis of voice on my iPhone.

[cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count - Owl Route

2014-12-15 Thread John Confer
Hi Folks,

Hearing an owl respond to an audio lure is great fun for me. But, I
would like to try a new owl route using audio lures for the Cayuga Bird
Club Christmas Bird Count. In the past 15 years I have adapted my route
to acvcomodate people who have moved into areas where I previously tried
the audio lure, which is entirely appropriate! Some of my stops are well
known for owls and may even have been "taped" to the point that they
produced tape fatigue so that staked out owls no longer respond on Jan
1. Consequently, what is left of my route is a very miserable area for
owling with the highest elevations in the count area, deepest snow, the
lowest temperatures, and maybe the lowest density of owls.

I'd like to try a new area at 400' elevation instead of 1400-2000"
with far less snow providing owls with easier access to mice, and warmer
temperatures, which may support more owls.

Anyone who has been using an area for pre-dawn audio lure owl surveys
certainly has the unquestioned priority to continue to use that area. If
the following doesn't impose on others, I'd like to try around the area
that includes Floral Ave., Coy Glen Rd., lower Buttermilk Falls St. Pk.,
Inlet Creek along Rt. 13, including Larch Meadows, the area behind Home
Depot.

Asher Hockett compiles this area and did not know of anyone doing
pre-dawn owl surveys in this area. *Has any one been using audio lures
for owls in this area?* Please let me know and I will rethink.

I guess comments about where someone does pre-dawn owling are fine
for the listserve. *If some other fool would like to join me at 4:00 AM
at lower Buttermilk Falls St. Pk. please respond to con...@ithaca.edu or
539-6308*

Hoot,

John Confer

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count and Hunting Pressure

2013-12-30 Thread bob mcguire
Thanks Jody.

I find Mo Barger's reference (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/42364.html) to the
DEC invitation for input most helpful. By the looks of it, the (western) season
dates are set EACH YEAR based on the recommendations of a group of 12 people.
The first two (J Adriance & J Eckler) appear to be DEC. The rest not. I don't
know who the remaining 10 are, but I suspect that none of them represent the
birding community (which is certainly affected by the process of hunting).

I would be curious to know what their meetings look like and how the decision
is actually made.

In an effort to move the discussion towards some sort of resolution, I have
have a couple of questions. Does anyone have answers?

1) Has the late waterfowl hunting season overlapped with the Ithaca CXBC for
ever? If not, since when?
The DEC must work each year within guidelines established by the US Fish and
Wildlife Service. Those guidelines can change each year based on surveys of
breeding pairs of ducks across a wide swath of Canada and the northern US and
surveys of ponds in the prairie pothole region of the Great Plains. Results of
these surveys affect total season length, bag limits for ducks (including for
specific species and even hens vs. drake ducks), and whether states can have a
split season or just one set of inclusive dates for hunting ducks. These
guidelines differ for each of the four major flyways in North America (we are
in the Atlantic Flyway; the others are the Mississippi, the Central, and the
Pacific). New York is the only state in the nation that is allowed by federal
regulation to have five management zones for hunting waterfowl. Most states
are limited to no more than three. NY's topography and habitat diversity are
unique when it comes to waterfowl. The five zones allow for a finer resolution
on harvest management.

In years when duck populations are low (often corresponding to drought in the
pothole region), seasons are short, bag limits are low, and usually split
seasons don't occur. Compared to historical trends, populations of many (not
all) species of waterfowl are relatively high this year. Thus, federal
guidelines allow states to have the maximum number of days for hunting ducks
(60 in NY), liberal bag limits, and a split season. (NY has a split season
this year in that the first split starts in October and goes for a 43 days this
year in the western zone and then started again on December 28 for another 17
days for a total of 60 days).

2) Who (office or person) in the DEC sets the season dates? Is it strictly a
matter for the DEC, or is US Fish & Wildlife involved?

NY has a waterfowl management team made up of biologists from across the state.
They set the start-end dates for hunting in the different management zones
based on a host of data, including average freeze-up dates (e.g., beaver ponds
in the northern part of the state freeze over by early November causing ducks
to move out of that part of the state), timing of waterfowl migration, when
waterfowl hunting have time available for hunting (which is why the season
dates try to maximize weekends and holidays), and other factors. Having done a
lot of research on waterfowl hunters and waterfowl hunting for DEC to use in
season setting over the last 25 years, I can say that I am aware of no
mechanism through which DEC could change season timing or other regulations
within a small area of one of the five major management zones in the state.

3) I know we have a TRADITION of counting on New Year's Day. (And I love to
start the new year this way.) But would counting on a different day change the
value of the data we collect? And in a significant manner?

I know others can speak to this more knowledgeably that I can. I recall in
previous years so good discussion of the pros and cons of changing the timing
of counts, etc.

Hope this helps

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count and Hunting Pressure

2013-12-30 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
No, the late duck hunting season has not always overlapped with our count.
It's only been a problem in the last 10 years or so. I remember being shocked
the first time the opening day was 1 January. I had never experienced any such
disruption in the previous decade of the count.

The duck season can change every year if the DEC decides to do it. It has
started on 1 Jan for the last few years, but started earlier this year. So, if
we had moved our count back to this last weekend, we would have been just as
bad off. I believe the length, timing, and even existence of waterfowl seasons
are tied to duck productivity numbers so that they can be responsive to
population changes. I'm not sure there even WAS a late duck season 20 years
ago.

The only predictable and reliable date in any of this is that most people have
1 January off. Everything else changes with the year.

Kevin

[cayugabirds-l] Christmas Bird Count Ithaca

2009-12-29 Thread Linda Orkin

Hello everyone,

Just a reminder and a plea. Our count is coming up fast. January One
is right around the corner.

We still need counters in all areas for good results and for the
satisfaction gained by having our whole wonderful birding community
joining together in a common purpose.

Please email me if you are even just wavering on the brink of even
considering doing this this year.

Hope to hear from you

Linda
