Hi Cayugabirders, The Hermit Thrush I first saw (and initially mid-identified) in my backyard a couple of days ago has been coming to feed on the blue "berries" on my scavenged eastern red-cedar branches throughout the day so I set up a blind and spent the afternoon photographing it. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hermit Thrush/Fox Sparrow
Hi Larry and all, Fox Sparrows are just peaking now out here in the hills around West Danby. This morning they seems to be everywhere, and easy to spot because the world is white again (groan). I was just watching a couple of Hermit Thrushes eating sumac berries. -Geo > On Apr 17, 2018, at 11:29 AM, W. [cayugabirds-l] Hermit Thrush/Fox Sparrow
This morning as I casually looked out our bay window to see how the birds were doing, a bird landed on our clothesline pole. I could tell it was different from the others, so when I looked through binocs, it turned out to be a HERMIT THRUSH. This is an unusual bird for our residential location. Anthropomorphizing this bird, it had a surprised look on its face as though saying, "Where the heck am I?!? I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere?" It only stayed momentarily. Today we still have a FOX SPARROW (visual and singing), and yesterday we had 3 show up! That makes 6 days they've been here --- in the past they have normally only stayed for a couple days. I'm assuming the weather patterns have a big part to do with this --- stalled fronts to our north and no big push from the south to help/encourage them to move on? Ha ha. Weren't you lucky! Well, we used to have an Oven Bird that moved through checking out our wood chip path where it found things to eat. [cayugabirds-l] Hermit thrush from Six Mile Creek
?Hi all, Just before sunset, I heard a Hermit Thrush singing from Six Mile Creek side of the road and the sound coming through closed windows of my home office! I have heard in the past Wood thrushes. This is the first time I heard a Hermit Thrush! May be a passing migrant. Once there was a singing Gray-cheeked Thrush that spent a day in my yard. [cayugabirds-l] Hermit Thrush (behavior) and B. Thrasher in yard!
Woke Sunday to a male turkey displaying to females inches from my bedroom window, also robins building a nest on the house. I got 2 new yard birds on Earth Day: a singing BROWN THRASHER, and a HERMIT THRUSH scrounging around under feeders. An interesting thing I noticed was the feet of the Hermit Thrush would alternately tremble very fast, twitching side to side. I didn't know if it was healthy, until I checked BNA this morning and, low and behold, this behavior is called Foot quivering. From BNA: Foot-quivering (using feet to shake and scare insects out of clumps of dead or newly regenerating grasses) has been observed as a foraging maneuver by Hermit Thrush... Interpreted by Dilger (1956a) and also Brown et al. (2000) as a ritualized ambivalent intention movement of simultaneous, conflicting drives to attack and to retreat; but also may serve as foraging technique used to locate insects under leaf litter. Brackbill (1960) and Kilham (1977) cite observations of foot-quivering while foraging, with no indication of the birds being disturbed. [cayugabirds-l] Hermit Thrush
Around 5:00 today I saw a very cooperative HERMIT THRUSH along the East Hill Rec. Way. It was on the section between Mitchell St. and Honness Lane about 100' south of the signs which mark the start of the north end of the restricted part of the rec way. It was foraging in the leaf litter just a few feet off the asphalt. I noticed one peculiarity about the bird. Its tail kept quivering slightly, almost like it was shivering. Also, saw my first of the year female REDWING. It was in the very small, secluded cattail marsh southeast from the intersection of the rec way and the trail that leads to the rugby fields and the polo barns. Because of the excessively dry conditions, I was able to walk near to the marsh edge. Larry -- W.
