[cayugabirds-l] Loons on Seneca Lake

2021-11-23 Thread John Gregoire
Winds have been from the south on Seneca for the past couple of weeks. This
morning they were northwest and my Loon Watch did not disappoint.

>From 0700 to 0915 I counted around 240 Common Loons. They were vastly
outnumbered by gulls also heading south. No doubt I missed some loons
within the crowds of gulls due to poor visibility and/or distance. They
were all quite high.

At around 0800 a snow squall blew through reducing visibility to nearly
nothing. When it ended there were kettles of both loons and gulls wheeling
around waiting for better conditions. Once they all got back into gear and
headed south more high flying birds were seen but by 0915 I was too cold to
stay any longer.

It was good to see them! In Watkins Glen there is a live stream web
cam aimed up the Lake. Unfortunately loons have been too high to be seen
but I have seen a few in past days.

[cayugabirds-l] Loons over Seneca

2020-11-28 Thread John Gregoire
Did anyone do a watch on Cayuga today? While the winds weren't all that
promising it looked like the last possibility for a good while so
for comparison's sake I checked out Seneca Lake at Smith Park.

It was dismal. Had 1 between 0715 and 0730 then 13 between 0800 and 0830.
By 0900 it began to rain and I left.

There were several Loons in the water, calling now and then. Had a lot of
fun watching a Pileated feeding on wild grapes hanging from a tree.

2020-11-24 Thread John Gregoire
There was a small showing this morning, just 55 birds heading south, 5
heading north. Began at 0700 and stayed until 0830 under northwesterly
winds.

Most were singles, a few groups of two or three and one group of seven.

Also had two adult Bald Eagles and an immature.

[cayugabirds-l] Loons

2016-04-10 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi,
I am on my way to Montezuma along the east side of the lake. I want to share
that the lake is very calm right now and there are lots of common loons in
breeding plumage. Most are close in. I've watched them from Meyers and Long
Point parks. Also red-breasted mergansers doing their displays at Long Point.
I've never seen this before - quite impressive. The 2 males were doing a bowing
display in unison.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Loons over Cayuga

2015-11-12 Thread Peter

Hi.
I made a brief stop there about 3 pm yesterday on my way to Ithaca and
saw 3 common loons (didn't stay long)(and only had binocs).

Saw an additional 2 at Sheldrake point, further up the lake.
I plan to return after this front passes thru and get there around sunrise.
Perhaps time could have been a factor?

Ahoy bird watchers,

An environmentally minded ecologically sensitive professional videographer
would very much like to get footage of young eagles- on Lake Ontario or
elsewhere in Rochester Buffalo area.

Getting the youngsters as they learn and perfect soaring and flying would
be totally cool. Can you help out? If you see youngsters out and about in
a habitutal 'flying school' could you forward to me and Ill send it on to
him?

Thank you very much. The video would be useful for awareness and education
and would be widely seen I am certain! ( he gets submissions gets on
national TV regularly)

[cayugabirds-l] Loons, no. Cormorants, yes at Mud Lock

2015-04-23 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
John I went to Frontenac Park about 1 p.m. today. I counted 17
cormorants just south of the island no fewer than 20 more /within
sight/ south towards Carr's Cove. John had seen more fly that way as I
counted the ones at the island they no doubt were hidden behind the
point. I came home deliberately to get my scope to be sure they were
cormorants not loons. The slight uplift of the bills, heads held well
out of the water the fact that they were so close together indicated
to me that they were cormorants. With the scope seeing the color of
their bills I confirmed that they were not loons.

Becky I went north, leaving her place about 2:45 p.m., to check on
count osprey nests. An exceptionally large flock of cormorants, which
she estimated to be at least 100, lifted from the lake in the area south
of Harris Park in Cayuga flew north. We didn't watch to see where they
went.

Last Fri., 17th, at the Lock, I saw one lone loon floating about 200
yards from the actual dam. It was the ONLY bird in the area that day
except for an eagle on the nest.

[cayugabirds-l] loons at Sayre: a happy adventure

2015-04-07 Thread Susan Fast
One of my daughters lives in a house fronting one of 2 ponds next to the
Guthrie Medical Complex in downtown Sayre, Pa.  She called last evening to
report 4 large black and white birds on her pond.  I immediately thought
common merganser, but she then described what were obviously COMMON LOONS.
Excitement!!  She wanted to know how long they would remain, and I said they
would most likely be gone today. She called this morning to say 3 had departed,
but one remained.  It would swim to one end of the pond, and try to get
airborne, just clearing the water before it realized there were houses  in the
way, whereupon it splooshed back into the water.  It repeated this a number of
times.  My daughter wanted to know what was going on, and I, as the bird
expert, started a spiel about how it was somehow damaged, lead poisoning,
contacting the DNR, wildlife rehabilitator, and was just blathering into the
difficulties of capturing it, when the phone almost leaped out of my hand and
all I could hear was loud, incoherent shouting and screaming.  When some
measure of calm returned, I heard HE MADE IT, HE MADE IT, as indeed it did,
like the little engine that could, it gave its all and just cleared the houses,
took a loop over the pond, and headed north.

[cayugabirds-l] loons, woodpecker frugivory, ducks, cormorant

2013-11-24 Thread Dave Nutter
Late into a lazy morning I started my day's bird list by looking out the living room window and noticed, in addition to the numerous gulls in the air (many kettling possibly southbound Ring-billed Gulls, as Ken Rosenberg described), a COMMON LOON in direct southerly flight high against the clouds. I decided to watch for more, and in the course of an hour counted 57 loons which were southbound in about a 10:1 ratio over northbound. One of them actually circled as I watched, then continued south, so it's possible all, even the handful I saw going north, eventually went south today. In the early afternoon Laurie and I took a walk in Cass Park as far north as the rink. Especially fun for me was seeing a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS just north of Union Field clinging to the trunk of a tree but leaning away to daintily pluck Poison Ivy berries which dangled nearby. Cayuga Inlet hosted several interesting waterfowl. Although eBird was most impressed by my count of nearly 200 HOODED MERGANSERS in a flock swimming near the Farmers' Market, I was more intrigued by the presence of a sleeping pair of COMMON GOLDENEYE near the border of Newman Golf Course and Jetty Woods (unusual off the lake), 2 female NORTHERN SHOVELERS near the Boatyard Grill (unusual away from the lake or the shallows), and a single DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT diving just north of the NYS-89 bridge (still present despite the cold, but no longer visible from my yard when I arrived home, it was teasing me for not noting a yard-bird date for it yet this year).--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Loons

2013-11-12 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Much too windy and snowy to band saw-whets last night so we were up early and
feeling Looney. Went to the south lookout at Taughannock and spent a bit over an
hour counting flying loons. Total; count was 53 airborne and two watchers.
Pretty
lackluster with as many or more birds going north as heading south. We were
there
from slightly before 08 to after 09.

A single loon was in the water (surf?) off the point, northwest winds were in
the
20mph sustained range and snow showers abounded. We did see a single Lesser
Black-backed Gull close in off the point.

I had a late appointment in Aurora this afternoon so I made a quick

distance, but wasn't sure because of the poor view.
It may portend a fine day of lake scanning on Saturday.

[cayugabirds-l] loons scoters, etc, off Treman Marine park

This afternoon (1 Dec) I walked from my house through Cass Park, past Treman Marina, to Cayuga Lake. Birds of special interest included:an apparent hybrid CANADA GOOSE X BLUE GOOSE in the southeast corner of the lake among the CANADA GEESE. It had a brown body and a white head and neck, and a point of the brown extending up the side of the neck.2 BRANT as Jay reported in Treman Marina1 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER female diving far beyond the piling cluster with1 BLACK SCOTER female5 RED-THROATED LOONS, the most I've ever confidently seen. One was diving off East Shore Park, one was floating off the Treman Park lakeshore, and 3 were diving far beyond the piling cluster in the middle of the lake. This impressed eBird as well as it did me.2 COMMON LOONS diving far to the northwest toward shore5 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS resting on a log west of the red lighthouse. This impressed me more than it did eBird.12 TURKEY VULTURES soaring over Cayuga Heights. This impressed eBird more than it did me.I may have also heard a COMMON REDPOLL calling from a tree along the lakeshore, but it and its buddy flew off before I could get a look.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Loons

2010-10-23 Thread Susan Fast
This morning, Susie had a craving for Triangle Diner chili, while I had a
hankering for to see some COMMON LOONS. So we went N. around mid-day and
found what we sought. I counted the listed number of loons on the lake at
the following locations; most counts fairly accurate-no estimates.

360 Long Point SP-feeding frenzy

100 N. of LPSP

150 Aurora Bluffs south

 90Wells Coll. boathouse, looking N.

106 Aurora Bluffs north

Total = 806

Notes: The feeding frenzy was just off the point at LPSP and also involved
mostly RING-BILLED GULLS (150) and D. C. CORMORANTS (40). I could not
determine what they all were after. During the height of the frenzy, I
counted 110 loons on a scan. After it was over, and most of the loons were
resting on the surface, I scanned the small area and counted 360. I've
never seen that many loons in such a small area. These numbers might be
useful in estimating total loons in an area where they are actively
feeding-twice as many loons being below the surface as on it.

[cayugabirds-l] Loons

2009-11-04 Thread Meena Haribal
As I stepped out into back yard to catch bus, I just looked up and found
loons overhead. There were nine of them fairly low in a tight knit group.
So I watched them for a few seconds and almost missed the bus. Luckily
driver saw me and stopped the bus :-)
Along East Ithaca Recreation Way, between Maple Hill and Game farm way
there was my usual Mocking bird. Today he was on a slightly further away
tree and called a couple of times as I passed. I replied back as usual. It
seems to be kind of we say hello to each other almost everyday. There were
several Am robins in equestrian field on fruit trees.
