I also had a pair in my yard yesterday. At first both were foraging on dead 
trees, but then one found a patch of poison ivy and was meticulously was 
picking individual berries off the vine. Very much surprised me, as I wouldn’t 
have guessed berries as a food source for woodpeckers. However they are a 
native source of late-winter food for birds!

A couple days ago, we had a pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS (male and female) at 
our feeders, at the same time! The female kept feeding on a suet feeder for 
several minutes.  Kept dropping bits of suet, which the squirrels made quick 
work of. I wonder if the female was storing up in anticipation of nesting.

[cayugabirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker drumming

Hi all,

On my walk on Mt Pleasant Road this morning, around 11 I heard the drumming of 
a Pileated Woodpecker echoing from deep in the woods on the south side of the 
road. With the lengthening days, it won't be long before some of our other 
winter residents start adding to the chorus. Maybe they already are elsewhere 
in the region?
Also a lone Snow Bunting along the roadside. 'Bout time they showed up!

[cayugabirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker a daily visitor

A gorgeous male Pileated Woodpecker has been feeding at our suet feeder 
several times a day for the last week or more. The feeder is only 15 
feet from our kitchen window so we can watch him for several minutes at 
a time. Last evening he was last here at 7pm after several visits during 
the day and this morning he was back again at 7:30am. When we are 
outside gardening he zooms by, flying low on sweeping wings, quite a thrill.

[cayugabirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker/ grapes

As I walked south from my place an hour ago, I heard what I thought was the 
call of a Northern Flicker. When I finally located the bird, it was a female 
PILEATED WOODPECKER quietly calling while flapping awkwardly, trying to hang 
onto flimsy grape vines while eating the wild grapes!
The call was not "maniacal" as we often hear from Pileateds, just rather quiet. 
I wondered why she was calling as she ate grapes.

Glad to see her again, as I have spotted her or a sister a few times this 
winter. This is good, since yesterday a handsome male Pileated Woodpecker was 
foraging in my back yard!

This also reminded me that we should always leave wild grapevines alive, 
because they provide good bird food in the dead of winter. I have seen a lot of 
Robins eating wild grapes this winter! Up in my woods I have some huge (5" in 
diameter) grape vine "trunks" climbing into the trees. I believe those are 
actually left over from domestic grape vines someone had planted there on 
mounds of earth decades ago, now surrounded by 3rd growth woods. Glad that I 
have left them, even tho they kill a few trees - which also provide bird 
benefits after a while!

[cayugabirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker Mating Dance

On Sat. when I went to my mailbox on North Sunset Drive Ithaca, I noticed that 
my neighbors had a spotting scope aimed on a tree trunk. There were 2 Pileated 
Woodpeckers scurrying up and down the tree. I was told that they had been there 
for a least one hour. I got my binocs and watched for  around 10 minutes and 
ultimately they chased each other to the ground and flew off. What a thrill on 
a glorious gardening day.

[cayugabirds-l] Pileated woodpecker

>From 2:30 to 3 p.m. today I watched a good-sized male Pileated Woodpecker
just back of my house. He was tearing apart a pile of rotted logs that have
been there for years. He worked his way along the side and nearly under when
a gray squirrel came sauntering along down the side hill and too close to
Mr. Woodpecker. There was quite a flurry as the woodpecker tilted back,
wings outspread and with his feet let Mr. squirrel  have it ! The squirrel
left the area fast and the woodpecker continued his search for a good meal.
I often see the Pileated, sometimes 2 or 3 as there is a woods back of my
house and old trees in front along the lakeshore. Cardinals and Carolina
wrens are singing loud and clear now. The Robins that have stayed here this
"winter" will be heading back to Newfoundland to nest and the ones that went
further south will be coming back to us soon. It has been a joy to have them
around whichever way they are going.

Saw this for my first time last year. Saw pileateds feeding on Virginia Creeper 
berries and then, for as long as the grapes persisted on vines in a maple at 
the front of my driveway, had them visit for that fruit snack everyday.

 Just goes to show, as birders, we've never seen it all.

A pileated woodpecker has been regularly seen high up in a pine tree outside 
Mann Library.  The 3rd floor of Mann offers an eye-level view, and binos are at 
the window for general use.
