This evening a friend and I watched from my porch a YBS going back and forth
between the peanut and suet feeders. When I first saw it, I went on All About
Birds and also brought out the Crossley Guide for us to more clearly see the
striking difference between this bird and a Downy or Hairy. I

remember reports of any over-wintering here on the west side of Ovid before
this year, and there is only one report in eBird for Dec-Feb in the S

There seems to be numerous reports of sapsuckers in CNY this winter. In my
thirty plus years living here I don't recall ever seeing one in the winter.

There seems to be numerous reports of sapsuckers in CNY this winter. In my
thirty plus years living here I don't recall ever seeing one in the winter.
Here in McGraw I have one visiting my feeders for the past few weeks. How
common is it for them to winter in our area?
Thanks, Tom Fernandes
This morning we had a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on our lilac outside our
kitchen window. Gorgeous bird.
I thought I had reported last week, but we had two FOX SPARROWS,
scritchy-scratching on the ground. We also SAW a CHIPPING SPARROW, rather than
HEARD (as I had reported on August 26th).

I was surprised to see a *male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker* visiting our suet
feeder this morning in Caroline.
Shouldn't they all have migrated further south by now?

Hi Laura,
It's certainly possible. The Ithaca Christmas Bird Count (held on Jan 1st every
year) usually turns up one or two Sapsuckers, sometimes three or four, once
even five.

I believe I spotted a yellow-bellied sapsucker at my feeders in Newfield this
afternoon. I could only see its back and head, and while I haven't seen many
that close, I am very familiar with all of the year-round woodpeckers here, and
it wasn't any of the usual visitors.
I heard them in the woo
Hi All,
Every once in a while I am fortunate enough to be able to conduct a
30-minute stationary count during mid-day at a point in about the middle of the
woods adjacent to my house. Today was one of those days, and my count was the
47th half-hour count at that site since the beginning o

An absolutely gorgeous YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER male just came to one of
our peanut feeders. Doubtful this is a migrant, since our first
sightings don't occur until April.

This morning there is an immature male YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on the
lilac tree above my feeders. I believe it was last year I had an immature
female that hung around for the winter.

I'm surprised I have seen one before now, but there is a YELLOW-BELLIED

Yes, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at my feeders was female, immature, and
with the brownish feathers. I live within 5 miles of St. Anthony's cemetery
(actually less, as the Sapsucker flies), so it could very well be the same
bird that you saw.
Someone who lives near upper Treman Park contacted me
Marla,
On the Cortland Christmas Bird Count on December 18, we found a Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker in the St. Anthony's cemetery on the hill above town of Groton. It
was an immature bird that was still fairly brownish and had a white throat
(female). I'm wondering if you are near there and if this

my suet feeder. I typically get all the regular woodpeckers at my feeders,
but this is the first time to have a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker here in
January.

I just got pictures from my aunt whose neighbor has had a
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker visiting her feeders in Ovid. I'm not sure
the date of the last sighting, but the bird has been regular and was
at this person's feeders last winter too. I'm not sure what count
circle Ovid falls in, but if this
