Re: [cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird, Seneca Falls

2024-01-27 Thread Dave Nutter
The location where David Suggs found the Yellow-headed Blackbird is south of
NYS-318 and north of the mountains of garbage landfill and other operations by
the company called Seneca Meadows. Never having seen a Yellow-headed Blackbird
in the Cayuga Lake Basin, I decided to chase this first-basin-record-of-2024
bird.

Shortly after 4pm, Dennis Anderson and Tim Wing sent out text alerts that they
had refound the large mixed-blackbird flock, including the Yellow-headed
Blackbird, at the Seneca Meadows Wetland Preserve, the amazing large area of
prairie, pond, and marsh land which the landfill operators constructed next to
some existing woods on former cornfields to the east of their holdings on both
sides of NYS-414. Daytime access to the extensive trail system is from a
parking lot on Black Brook Rd nearly opposite King Rd.

Mark Miller and I converged on that parking lot and met Dennis & Tim as they
were walking out. The location of the flock was along the north border of the
Preserve. Waves of blackbirds - largely Common Grackles with Red-winged
Blackbirds - were alternately feeding just out of sight in a cornfield just
north of the Preserve, and flying up to rest briefly in a hedgerow of bare
deciduous trees along the border near a small shack along the trail for people
to rest or take shelter from rainstorms. This is southeast of where David Suggs
saw them.

Mark & I both scanned the birds flying and in the trees for several minutes,
but we did not see the Yellow-headed Blackbird, and at 4:35pm the large flock
took off and flew ENE, presumably to roost, in the direction of Montezuma NWR.

Mark, being an avid photographer with a good camera, also took a bazillion
photos, and the Yellow-headed Blackbird was perched in one set. I will have to
try again &/or be lucky to see a Yellow-headed Blackbird locally, and I will
appreciate any further reports of this bird. Good birding!

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird- Conlon Road in Lansing

2023-03-01 Thread Gladys J Birdsall
This afternoon, about 2 PM, I was driving North on Conlon Road in
Lansing.  Just past where Searles Rd extension comes into Conlon Rd. on
the right - at an angle, there are cornfields on both sides.  There were
thousands of Blackbirds on both sides, in the road and in the
surrounding treetops.  As I watched the birds in the road, suddenly a
Yellow-headed Blackbird (male) pops out among the crowd.  I watched it
for about 15 -20 seconds and the whole bunch lifted up and I was able to
follow it for a bit.  I thought it maybe went up into the trees.  I
tried to refind it but did not right away.  Maybe 20 minutes later I was
following a flock that had lifted up and out popped that yellow head and
the white primary coverts.   I followed it for several seconds till the
whole bunch turned and lost it again.

This huge flock was mostly Red-winged, and I spotted some females,
Brown-headed Cowbirds, and Common Grackles.   Quite the spectacle and
sounds!

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird Sodus Point

2016-08-21 Thread mgullo2
Joe Wing and I had a female Yellow-headed Blackbird at Sodus Point this
morning/early afternoon. The bird was initially seen on the east pier, later
the east breakwall, before flying over to the west pier. It was last seen on
the very end of the east pier before it was flushed by kids walking over there.
We could not relocate it before I had to leave.

[cayugabirds-l] yellow headed blackbird

2015-11-15 Thread joe & Diana
Hi All,

What another beautiful day. There were thousands of blackbirds this afternoon
on East Road. I was photographing them until the neighbor's plane repeatedly
flew in circles around the fields, eventually scattering them. I have been
interrupted in a lot of ways, but that is a new one. Maybe flying lessons were
going on, but I was hoping they weren't going to fly into a flock of birds.
Anyway, I am looking through the images and there is a yellow headed blackbird,
a first for me. Maybe they will be around tomorrow.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird

2015-08-27 Thread Ann Mitchell
After standing around Van Dyne Spoor Road for close to 7 hours, I got a 10th of
a second look at the bird. I was scanning the cattails with my scope and saw a
yellow and black bird dive into them. I did have a better look at it's head,
but it was still totally anticlimactic. Dave didn't see it, so we stuck around
to try to get another view of it, but no luck.
I hope other people get better looks.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird reported on Murfield Road

2013-04-17 Thread Paul Anderson

A friend of mine was surprised to see an unusual bird at his feeder
early this morning. He and his wife looked through their field guide and
concluded it was a Yellow-headed Blackbird. It feasted for about 10-15
minutes before flying off.

This was at 70 Murfield Road. The feeder is at the back of the house and
can probably be seen from Waterwagon or Ryan's Way.

I have asked them to call and take photos if it shows up again.

I saw it this morning at ~11:30 AM. It was perched in the tip-top of a deciduous tree on the east side of the park road in the same area where it has been present since early December. This particular tree seems to be its favorite vantage point, as I have seen it on four occasions in the tip-top of this exact tree. Over at Montezuma, despite today's thaw, everything is completely iced over. There was nothing at Tschache (except for one adult Bald Eagle), Knox-Marcellus, and Puddlers. At Mud Lock there were several hundred TUNDRA SWANS, and at least six BALD EAGLES. I could not locate the Red Headed Woodpecker that was present along Rt 89 earlier this week. On Armitage Road, between Route 89 and Olmsted Road, a flock of ~500 Starlings flew in front of my car. In the flock was a bird with white flashes in the wings. Fortunately for me, the flock descended into a field on the south side of the road, and I was able to study an absolutely stunning male YELLOW HEADED BLACKBIRD for a few minutes. The flock was very skittish, and did not stay in one spot for more than a few minutes, but did move around the field to a low spot that still has some open water. There were no other blackbird species in the flock!!! Parenthetically, I am still in shock that I have seen two adult male Yellow-Headed Blackbirds thus far in 2013, thanks to Brad Carlson's hospitality back on January 3rd. 2012-09-30 Thread Leona Lauster
There was a extremely large mixed flock of blackbirds in the marsh on Van Dyne
Spoor Road this evening. Many of the birds were sitting on cattails and weeds
instead of diving in. I got out my window mount and soon found a beautiful
male Yellow-headed Blackbird. The head and breast were a brilliant yellow. The
body, wings and tail were black and I could easily see the white wing patch on
the wing that was facing me. I was thrilled to get such a good look at this
bird.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird continues in Endicott

2012-05-10 Thread Dave Nutter
Today was my first chance to see the male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD which has (fortunately for me) taken up residence since late April in West Corners Marsh next to NYS-26 in northwestern Endicott, Town of Union, Broome County NY. As others have mentioned, it is best viewed from the driveway of the Ann McGuinness Middle School, and it favors the shrubby part of the marsh on the west half rather than the cattail vegetation or more open watery areas. It is not visible all the time, but it's worth waiting a few minutes for it to pop up, especially if you have a scope: It's a gorgeous bird with golden-yellow head/neck/breast, black otherwise except white wing patches. This is a great opportunity to see a bird which is normally far to our west, or when it does stray here is only glimpsed in a huge passing flock of other blackbirds.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-Headed Blackbird

2012-05-03 Thread shannon
I happened to be in Endicott earlier this evening and decided to stop by the
marsh to try to see the yellow-headed blackbird again (after being unsuccessful
at trying to find it on Sunday afternoon).  When I arrived, Jeff Gerbracht and
kids had already done a great job of locating it.  Great clear views on this
gorgeous sunny day... was glad to see it was still around.

I made the trip to Broome County from Seneca Castle this morning. Spotted
the bird before I got out of the car. Stayed in view across the marsh for the
1/2 hour I stayed. He was really aggressive to any bird that came his way RWBB,
Grackles even a Yellow Warbler which it chased around the marsh. Beautiful
bird!!! Thanks Dave for posting the great directions. Also saw my FOY Gray
Catbird while I was watching the blackbird. Janet Akin, Seneca

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-Headed Blackbird, photos

2012-04-30 Thread Melissa Groo

Got some photos of the Yellow-Headed Blackbird in Endicott, yesterday. You can
view them online at the Cayuga Bird Club site in my gallery, at:
http://www.cayugabirdclub.org/gallery

I also included a heavily cropped photo of a MERLIN whizzing by high over the
swamp (though please let me know if I've misidentified it).

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-Headed Blackbird Endicott, NY

2012-04-28 Thread Anne Marie Johnson

Tim and I went to see the Yellow-headed Blackbird this morning. It's
still in the small marsh next to school. I am copying David
Nicosia's directions below. The view into this marsh from the road
to the soccer field is outstanding. When the bird is up and perched
in the marsh, it can be seen easily with binoculars.

The bird is spending long periods of time down inside a thicket
about halfway back on the left side of the marsh. In our experience,
when it popped up, it perched for a few seconds, flew to the left
edge of the marsh in trees and on the ground, and then returned to
the thicket, perched a bit more and then dropped back out of sight.

When we arrived at about 11:15, Victor Lamoureux
had been scanning for 30-45 minutes without seeing the bird.
Fortunately, the bird popped up about 15 minutes later, just as lots
of people arrived to see it (and Victor returned from checking
nearby roads). It only stayed up for a few minutes. Then it was down
for about 15 minutes before popping back up for a few more minutes.
When it was up, it perched in the open long enough to give everyone
amazing looks. What a beautiful bird!

Anne Marie Johnson

Directions:
To get to the marsh, you drive down route 26, the google
earth address is 1329 union center maine highway, endicott, ny.
You basically drive down route 26 and turn right before
you get to the Ann G. McGuinness Intermediate School.
There is a road which leads up to the soccer fields for
the school. The Marsh is on the corner of route 26/union center
main
highway and the road that leads to the soccer fields. You
can park by the marsh. The road overlooks it from above so you can get
good views.

Given the cold northerly winds expected through tonight,
the bird may stick around for another day or so.

Melissa Penta and I got great views mainly with the scope
of the YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD almost immediately
when we arrived at West Corners Marsh around 7 am.
I briefly heard the buzz saw sounding call while she was the first
to sight it. The white on the wings in flight is very
distinctive! What a great bird for Broome County and many
thanks to Sara Kinch for posting this last night!!!

Bob Grosek stopped by while we were there
and he could not recall if we have ever had one
in Broome County before. Anyone know?

Anyway I got some fair digi-scoped images
which are distant. I put theexact location of where we
had the bird on the mapping feature of flickr for those interested
in finding the bird. The bird is best seen if you pull onto the road
that the school is on. This road is above the marsh and gives
you the best views.

Yellow-headed Blackbird still at Ann McGinnus site (Endicott) as of 6:25am
today. I do have some very lousy photos (not very light out, misty rain, no
tripod) but the bird can be I.D.'d.

It is a school day, so I am unsure where people would/should park. The "road"
is really the driveway up to the school where all the buses go, with limited
parking. Though normally parking is easy, it won't be today.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-headed Blackbird

2010-08-27 Thread grosb...@clarityconnect.com
Hello all,

Additionally, while enjoying a very rare Matt-event (Alan Belford's middle
was Matthew so he stood in as
an honorary Matt for the night), and while Medler was on his phone and
Williams was inspecting a
sparrow-chip, Alan and I had an ADULT FEMALE YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD fly
low over us with a mixed
flock of Red-winged Blackbirds.

Shorebird numbers weren't crazy high, but in addition to the phalaropes,
we did manage 15+ STILT
SANDPIPERS, 15+ DOWITCHERS (seemed to be Short-billed but they were at a
pretty good distance), 1
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 4 SANDHILL CRANES and much more. I even dusted off
my skills and pulled
out 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. A nearly steady stream of migrant BOBOLINKS
continued over for what had to
be 30-45+ minutes --they were still going over when we left around 7:30.
This was all at Knox-Marcellus
from Towpath.

Evening was topped off with dinner at the Dino in Syracuse. A good time for
sure.
