[cayugabirds-l] Bobolink @Kendal

2023-05-15 Thread Donna Lee Scott
For 3 days we have seen a male Bobolink on SE side of Mt. Kendal !
So far no female seen.
Male does typical flight, lands on top of thistle & quietly sings his lovely
song.
Also today I spotted a FOY Green Heron flying around overhead.

[cayugabirds-l] Bobolink-friendly hay cutting date

2018-06-01 Thread Bill Evans
A take away from Tom Gavin’s fascinating presentation in Danby this past
Tuesday is that if one can hold off on local hay cutting until after July 4,
most Bobolinks will have fledged by then. Mid-July even better.

While March was -4 F degrees off average and April –6.5, May was nearly 5
degrees above average (NE Regional Climate Center data). This likely has led to
taller grass height than average in central NY this spring, and farmers cutting
earlier than average (some fields in Danby have already been cut). Since
Bobolink nesting is relatively synchronous from year to year, anticipate
greater regional haying mortality for juvenile Bobolinks in 2018.

[cayugabirds-l] bobolink: a new yard bird

2018-05-18 Thread Marty Schlabach
While working in the garden, I identify many different common birds by song,
without looking up. We have bluebirds, tree swallows, barn swallows, mourning
doves, red wing blackbirds, house wrens, mockingbirds, robins and many others.
Today I heard a song I didn't quite recognize at first, and then suddenly
thought, 'that sounds like a bobolink'. The next thought was that it is
probably the mockingbird. Then I mentioned it to Mary Jean and she said, 'well
there is a dark bird on the pasture fence what has some white patches on it'.
We have about 2 acres fenced for pasture and sure enough, there were two
bobolinks on the fence. They flew down into the grass and back up to the fence
several times and then headed off. Not sure if they'll be staying around, but
it was great to have seen them during their visit, if they were just passing
through. The nearest field with breeding bobolinks that I'm aware of is about
2 miles away.

Hello Everyone,

Heard/saw my first-of-year Bobolink (just one) singing/displaying just to the
west of the pond near the Bee Lab off of Freese Road this evening about 7:30pm.

Nice to hear its jingle again.

[cayugabirds-l] Bobolink flyover

2012-04-30 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
While I was doing a brief nest watch of a crow nest located along the runway
approach east of the outer Lab parking lot, I heard a BOBOLINK singing as it
flew over. The weather makes it seem like the bird is early, but it really
isn't.
