We actually banded four nestlings. It would be great to know if ther were four
banded birds still flying.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Merlins @ GIAC

2019-05-16 Thread Dave Nutter
About 6:15pm in Cass Park near the Children’s Garden I saw a Merlin flying east
toward the general direction of GIAC. It was coming off West Hill somewhere and
was well above treetop level when it went over me, but appeared to be
descending slightly. Maybe they hunt over a wide area, or maybe it was
visiting.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Merlins galore - thanks

I sure wish you could export some of those Merlins to me up in Auburn. I have
tons of House Sparrows for them to eat.

By the way, I haven't noticed an actual shortage of House Sparrows yet, and
to me Merlins seem like a good trade for them so far.

Wells College campus. Three of the nests were predated. Although this is a
statistically tiny sample, it provides a very high rate of nest failure in

was the House Sparrow. Interestingly, House Sparrows have been declining
very rapidly, a decline that started long before Merlin started to nest and

It is nice to have our little urban falcon zipping around the town/city,
picking off a lot of species but mostly House Sparrows.

Thanks again for directing us to nest locations.

N.Titus merlins - both seen 5pm, perched in separate large maples high
up facing north. When grackle tried to land in top of  white pine near
street, merlins flew around screaming.  Nest site?
