[ccp4bb] Professor Dame Louise Johnson

2012-10-02 Thread elizabeth . duke
It is with great sadness that I would like to inform the crystallographic community of the death of one of the great pioneers of the field, Professor Dame Louise Johnson. Those of us who had the privilege to work alongside her benefitted greatly from her vision for extending technique and

[ccp4bb] Off topic: Meeting on X-ray imaging of whole, unstained biological cells

2012-10-26 Thread elizabeth . duke
Apologies about the off-topic nature of this posting. Some of the wider structural biology community may be interested in this meeting taking place at Diamond Light Source on December 5/6 2012. Diamond Light Source are hosting an Instruct funded 2-day meeting on cryo soft X-ray tomography of

no publication springs to mind immediately (often apparently of non scientific relevance) but I have seen it on numerous occasions so fully support James' comment. All you need to do is read the IUCr tables (yes, boring, but occaisionally useful) to see how simple it actually is. Liz

There is always hope!!! Seriously though, I have never seen anything like this before! I am watching this thread with interest to see what others suggest. THanks Also thanks should go specifically to Julian Nomme who took the trouble to send us all the Helliwell book link. Liz

I think there may be two effects going on here: I think the ears on the round spots which also feature on the more rod shaped spots if you look closely could be related to a misalignment of the beamline optics. I think the change in spot shape from round to rod shaped is due to the

In the past I've collected data on crystals with hollow ends and the spots were round and had no ears. As it was 15years ago, collecting on the old SRS my recollection of beam and crystal relative size is a little hazy but I think they were fairly well matched (both 200um). Dr. Liz Duke

[ccp4bb] Postdoc in novel technique development at Diamond Light Source

2011-10-06 Thread elizabeth . duke
Dear All This is rather off topic for the CCP4 BB but I would like to draw people's attention to developments currently taking place at diamond. We require a postdoctoral scientist to join an exciting and innovative project to develop methods associated with the soft X-ray imaging of

Hi You don't give any details of how you are collecting your data or what the protein is (small, medium, large, solvent content, unit cell etc etc). But at first glance your crystal is huge by modern day standards. Very often large crystals are of poorer overall quality than smaller
